Chryssikos set up the next two Garnet goals for Paul Chung '05 and Harman to extend the lead to 10-2 with 9:46 remaining in the third. Shoremen Stem Tide 6-3

April 12th, 2005

Backlog Forces Cancellations

April 12th, 2005

Mother nature works on her own schedule during the spring-time months and the rest of us just live in it. Frequent rain again this spring forced a pair of Swarthmore's early season non-conferece games to be postponed. Two Garnet opponents, DeSales University and Immaculata College, have opted to cancel previously postponed double headers (April 17th and April 20th), in order to complete their respective conference schedules on time.

In the meantime, Swarthmore will continue with their own Conference schedule today at 3:00 p.m. The Garnet square off against Muhlenberg (8-11, 2-2 CC), a perennial Centennial playoff participant a pair of games at sunny Clothier Fields.

Klingaman Sends Mules Packing

April 12th, 2005

Marianne Klingaman '07 dazzled the fans at Clothier Fields again, pitching Swarthmore to a 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg College in game two of the Tuesday afternoon Centennial Conference double header.

The Mules (9-12, 3-3 CC) benefited from three Garnet errors in the first game, rapping out seven hits to win 7-0.

Klingaman put Swarthmore on her back in the second game, retiring 11 batters in a row at one point. The sophomore right-hander threw all seven innings, earning her second complete-game victory of the season, and the fourth of her young career. She gave up three hits, maintaining her excellent control with three strikeouts and zero walks. Klingaman has gone a stretch of 74 consecutive batters without permitting a free pass.

The Garnet (8-18, 2-4 CC) put up the only run Klingaman would need in the third inning with a little text-book softball. Designated hitter Danielle Miller '06 laced a lead-off double off Mules pitcher Ally Ogden and was immediately sacrificed to third by left fielder Sam Brody '05. Catcher Christina Procacci '06 battled Ogden through an eight-pitch at bat before lofting a fly to left with enough depth to bring Miller home.

Swarthmore's victory continues their 2005 practice of exorcising past demons. Earlier in the week the Garnet halted a 26-game losing streak to Ursinus, and with their win today, ended a 13-game slide against Muhlenberg. Its been seven seasons since a Swarthmore softball squad took down one from Mules, that win coming via a 4-3 decision in game two off a 1998 doubleheader.

The Garnet look to keep their momentum going on Saturday, April 16th, travelling to Gettysburg College for a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference doubleheader.

Blue Jays take Two from Garnet

April 10th, 2005

Nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins won both ends of a Centennial Conference double header in Baltimore, Md., defeating Swarthmore 12-1 and 25-0 on Sunday afternoon.

An injury-stricken Garnet pitching staff, playing their fifth game in three days, had a tough day against the vaunted Blue Jay lineup, owners of a .333 team batting average at the start of the week. Giving up big-run innings did in Swarthmore (4-14, 2-6 CC), as Johns Hopkins (15-5, 5-3 CC) posted a ten-run inning in game one and followed up with a seven-run second frame in game two.

Swarthmore third baseman, and Baltimore native Andy Bender '08 plated the Garnet run in the first game, lofting a fly ball deep enough to sacrifice home catcher Travis Allen '08 in the seventh.

The Garnet return to action in short time, travelling back to Maryland on Tuesday, April 12th for a 3:30 p.m. ball game at Washington College.

Garnet Pitching Sweeps Away Terror

April 9th, 2005

Swarthmore right-hander Jared Leiderman '05 (above) tossed a complete game four-hitter in game one and teammate Noah Cooper-Harris '07 went the distance in game two, as the Garnet swept both ends of a Centennial Conference double header, 3-2 and 6-2, at Clothier Fields on Saturday afternoon.

Leiderman pumped up the Swarthmore fans right from the get-go, fanning consecutive Terror batters in the first inning. The Garnet hung on to the momentum, generating some run support for their ace in the bottom of the second. Jody Fisher '05 led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on freshman Travis Allen's single to left. Sam Faeder '07 flew out to center and Andy Bender '08 went down on strikes, but Fisher and Allen moved up a base on a passed ball by McDaniel catcher Justin Bilohlavek. Cooper-Harris made the Terror pay, stroking a 2-2 pitch into right field, driving in two runs for a 2-0 Garnet lead.

Swarthmore added another run in the third, with second baseman Pat Christmas '08 reaching on a walk, coming around to score when Allen beat the relay throw to first on a potential double-play.

Leiderman cruised along, allowing nary a base runner until the fourth frame. The Terror generated a run in the top of that inning, and threatened to do more damage in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out. Leiderman got Bilohlavek on strikes for the first out before a ground out by Kevin Salamone brought in a run, making the score 3-2. Tom Wenrich, the next batter, ran the count full before Leiderman struck him out swinging to end the inning.

Leiderman left little doubt who would win in the top of the seventh, the final inning of game one, striking out three straight Terror batters to earn his second win of the year. The senior right-hander tossed seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. His nine strikeouts in the game give Leiderman 51 for the season, tying a career-high, and push his career total to 192, second most in school history and the fifth most in Centennial Conference history. Leiderman continues to inch up the Conference all-time pitching ladder, ranking fifth all-time in innings pitched (233.1), fifth in complete games (18), and tied for fourteenth in appearances (43).

Allen led Swarthmore with a hit, a run, and an RBI with Cooper-Harris contributing a single and two RBIs as the Garnet won their first Centennial Conference game of the season.

Cooper-Harris took the mound in game two, continuing the string of solid Garnet pitching by spreading seven hits over nine innings for his first victory of the season. He blanked the Terror through eight and a third, until McDaniel (4-9, 1-5 CC) scratched out two runs on two hits, a walk, and a Swarthmore error in the top of the ninth.

By that time the Garnet bats provided Cooper-Harris plenty of runs to work with. Swarthmore broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of sixth when centerfielder Scott Dalane '08 walked and scored on a double to right off the bat Pat Christmas '08. Christmas made it 2-0 Swat two batters later, scoring on an error by a McDaniel infielder.

Swarthmore (4-12, 2-4 CC) got two more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth off Terror relievers, building a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Ian Adelstein '08 had two hits and a run, shortstop Sam Faeder '07 stayed hot with a double and two RBIs, while Christmas added a double and an RBI.

It was the first Garnet sweep of a Centennial twinbill since Swarthmore downed the Bullets from Gettysburg College, 5-3 and 3-0, on April 20th, 2002.

The Garnet travel to Baltimore on Sunday afternoon, squaring off with #7 Johns Hopkins in a 12:30 p.m. double header.
