Shoremen Stem Tide 6-3

Host Washington College (10-9, 4-5) defeated visiting Swarthmore College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference baseball game this afternoon at Athey Field. The Garnet Tide fell to 4-15 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

Washington plated the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple by Eric Guettermann and an RBI double by John Schmidt, Jr. The Garnet Tide got one run across in the third inning, on a Sam Faeder '07 RBI single but the Shoremen plated three runs in the fifth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Schmidt's second RBI double of the day was sandwiched between RBI singles from Guettermann and Jim Barossi in the three-run fifth. Each team scored a run in the sixth inning and the Garnet Tide scored a run in the ninth to provide the final margin.

Faeder was 3 for 5 on the day and Patrick Christmas '08 was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Jared Leiderman '05 pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, adding to his conference lead with 57 on the season.

The two squads hook up again on Friday at 3:30 on Clothier Field.
