Swarthmore Women Down Oberlin 8-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore women’s tennis team (2-0) blew by the Oberlin College Yeowomen (3-4) on Sunday afternoon winning eight of the nine matches of the day in the Mullan Center.

Kenyetta Givans Earns Two Golds, Breaks School Record to Pace Swarthmore Indoor Track at Centennial Championships

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It was quite a day for sophomore Kenyetta Givans.

Givans earned two golds, taking first place in the women’s 55m hurdles (8.44) and women’s 55 meter dash (7.47) – breaking the school record and earning an NCAA provisional time in the 55m hurdles – to pace the Swarthmore College indoor track teams at the Centennial Conference Championships from Haverford College on Saturday evening.

The Swat women’s 4×800 relay team – consisting of senior Lauren DeLuca, senior Mariel Feigen, sophomore Margret Lenfest, and freshman Rebecca Hammond – also earned a medal and made history, taking second-place with a school-record time of 9:41.47.

Garnet Men Open Lax Season With Convincing 8-2 Win Over Eastern

A strong defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack led the way for the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (1-0), which christened the 2010 season with an 8-2 victory over Eastern (0-1) on a frigid Saturday night from Clothier Field.

Senior Tyler Bradshaw and sophomore Zach Belden each netted two goals apiece, while senior Gavin Musynske, senior Anthony Phalen , sophomore John Bukawyn and freshman Wes Marcik also added goals to pace the Garnet attack.

Senior captain goalkeeper Kevin Friedenberg was outstanding in net for the Garnet, making 13 saves to lead a ferocious Swat defensive performance; the two goals allowed is the least by a Swat opponent since the 2008 season-opener against Randolph-Macon (3/1/08). Senior captain Max Wilson led the defense with three caused turnovers.

Garnet Women Tennis Match Postponed Until Sunday

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Due to the lingering effects of the winter weather that has crushed the Philadelphia region, the match for the Swarthmore Women’s Tennis team – scheduled for Saturday, February 27 against Oberlin College – has been postponed to Sunday, February 28, at a time to be determined.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team is gearing up to improve on the 2009 season which saw the Garnet finish with an overall record of 9-8. With an experienced core of returnees and an exciting group of first-years, there is a lot to look forward to in 2010 as the team looks to be an up-and-coming force in the Centennial Conference.

Life is never easy in Centennial Conference lacrosse, but the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team is hoping that the return of an elite defense, as well as several experienced and battle-hardened midfielders and attack men can help it improve upon last season’s 6-8 record and make some noise in the Centennial standings. The Garnet open the season this Saturday at home against Eastern (6:00 p.m.).

Baseball Home Opener Against PSU Abington Postponed Until April

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Due to the lingering effects of the winter weather that has crushed the Philadelphia region, the home opener for the Swarthmore College baseball – scheduled for Tuesday, March 2 against Penn-State Abington – has been postponed to Sunday, April 18th, at 1:00 p.m. from the Clothier Fields.

Garnet Badminton Outlasts Bryn Mawr 5-4

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The streaking Swarthmore badminton team (5-1) squeaked out a close 5-4 win at home over Bryn Mawr College on Monday night from Tarble Pavilion.

Will Gates Named All-Centennial

LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman Will Gates of the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team has been named to the 2009-10 All- Centennial Conference Team, the conference announced on Wednesday morning. Gates is a second-team selection.

Gates the first member of the Garnet to receive Centennial since Ian McCormick was named to the first team in 2008. He also becomes the first Swarthmore student-athlete to receive the honor as a freshman, while joining fellow second-teamer Jon Ward (Ursinus) as just the fifth and sixth freshmen in Centennial history to earn second-team honors.
