Garnet Soccer Teams Host Haiti Earthquake Relief Clinic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men’s and women’s soccer programs collaborated to host the Haiti Earthquake Relief Clinic on Saturday, March 20th at the College’s Clothier Field Stadium. The idea for the clinic, conceived by the two teams in order to benefit the victims of the January 12th Haiti Earthquake, was inspired in part by junior Philippe Celestin, a Swarthmore soccer player of Haitian descent. The clinic was a student-athlete-organized venture, with over 30 men’s and women’s players contributing to its organization and execution.

Swarthmore Womens Soccer Makes Sibling Adoption Through Friends of Jaclyn Foundation

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for children and families dealing with pediatric brain tumors. Jaclyn Murphy and her family founded the organization, inspired by Jaclyn’s experience as a nine-year-old cancer patient. The foundation matches children with a sports team, followed by a ceremonial adoption.

Swarthmore College Garnet Mens Soccer Hosts 8th Annual Benefit Youth Clinic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College Garnet men’s soccer team hosted its 8th annual benefit youth soccer clinic on Saturday, January 30th, raising over $600 for the relief agency Genocide Intervention Network (www.genocideintervention.net). In addition to learning basic skills, such as passing, dribbling, and defending, over 40 children had a chance to play matches against each other during the two-hour clinic. Members of Swarthmore STAND, G. I. Net’s student-spokespeople at the College, also briefed the children and their parents about the terrible humanitarian situation in Darfur, Sudan.

Garnet Women Host SRS Students for Basketball Skills Clinic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College Garnet women’s basketball team hosted 36 girls from the Swarthmore Rutledge School for a clinic on Thursday January 14th. The third through the sixth graders participated in an hour of drills, shooting, and competition. The girls were separated into multi-age and multi-skilled groups; each group coached by two of the Garnet team members. The young athletes learned correct shooting and dribbling forms, practiced passing, and competed in a dribbling/lay-up competition to end the session.

Tri Co Invitational Again A Success

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Swarthmore women’s lacrosse team, along with the teams from neighboring Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, hosted the second annual Tri-Co Women’s Lacrosse Invitational on Feb. 28. The one-day lacrosse festival included a goal-a-thon to promote awareness about autism.

On Thursday, May 1st, 2008, Swarthmore’s Harleigh Leach, Head Volleyball Coach and Eric Wagner, Head Men’s Soccer Coach participated in the annual World of Work program sponsored by the Swarthmore Rotary Club. The program is designed to give students an opportunity to learn from local business people and educators how “school related skills” are involved in the world of work.
