Four Swarthmore Student-Athletes Named to Philadelphia Inquirer 2010 Spring Academic All-Area Teams

PHILADELPHIA – Swarthmore College student-athlete Rachel Wallwork ’10 was named the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Tennis Performer of the Year for the second consecutive year, while colleagues Wiley Archibald ’10 (baseball), Kevin Friedenberg ’10 (men’s lacrosse), and Stephen Youngblood ’12 (men’s tennis) were also selected as Academic All-Stars for their respective sports, the paper announced on Tuesday.

Three Garnet Lax Players Named All-Centennial

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior goalie Kevin Friedenberg, senior attack Tyler Bradshaw and senior defender Max Wilson have been selected as members of the 2010 All-Centennial Conference men’s lacrosse team, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Friedenberg is a first-team selection, while Bradshaw and Wilson both made the second team. Wilson is a second-team selection for the second straight season, while Friedenberg makes the first team after being named Honorable Mention in 2009.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (4-9, 1-7) scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a 6-5 lead over visiting rival Haverford, but the Fords stormed back in the fourth, scoring the period’s only two goals to en route to a narrow 7-6 victory over the Garnet on Senior Day from Clothier Field Stadium.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Tyler Bradshaw scored his 30th and 31st goals of the 2010 season, but it wasn’t enough to handle a powerful Gettysburg offense, as the No. 2 Bullets handled the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team 19-3 on Saturday evening from the Battlefield.

Senior Anthony Phalen scored the Garnet’s only other goal on the day.

Musynske Nets Game Winner as Garnet Lax Wins Rollercoaster Game Over Drew, 8-7 (2OT)

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Gavin Musynske scored the game-winning goal with :10 seconds left in the second overtime on a contested shot from the left wing, as the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (4-7, 1-5) defeated Drew 8-7 in a double-overtime thriller on Wednesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

The wild contest saw the Garnet shut out the visiting Rangers (6-4, 3-0) for the first 44 minutes of play, building a 6-0 lead late into the third period, only to see Drew come back and score seven unanswered goals over a 10-minute stretch throughout the third and fourth periods to miraculously take the lead at 7-6 with just 5:18 left to play in the game.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – It’s been quite a week for senior Tyler Bradshaw.

Three days after leading the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (3-7, 1-5) to its first Centennial Conference victory of the season, the senior attacker scored a career-high five goals, including the game winner with 3:33 left to play as the Garnet defeated Christopher Newport 11-9 on Saturday afternoon from Stonewall Jackson High School.
