April 20th, 2005

Jeff Donlea '05 scored a team-high four goals and freshman goalie Frank Mazzucco made 20 saves as Swarthmore downed Muhlenberg 14-9 in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

It was all Mules in the first period, out-shooting the Garnet 10-4 while racing to a 4-1 lead. Swarthmore responded big time in the second period, netting three goals on only six shots to knot the score at 4-4. Ryan McKenna '07 got things started with his second goal of the game at 13:44. Gavin Nurick '07 scored his 10th goal of the season at 2:46 and Adam Miller '08 tied the score with his second career goal at 1:48.

Mazzucco built a wall in front of the Garnet net during that second period, stopping six shots to get Swarthmore back in the contest.

The Garnet (6-5, 2-3 CC) keep things rolling in the third period, scoring the first four goals of the half to build a 8-4 advantage. Donlea put his first one of the game in at 10:02, Matthew Perez '06 scored his first goal of the season at 9:36, Chris Harman '08 lit up the board at 6:57, and Donlea struck again at 6:57, finishing off a pass from Tom Coughlin '05.

The Mules (7-6, 0-5 CC) got a goal at 2:13 but the Garnet got scores from Donlea and sophomore Jay Charles to close period number three with a 10-5 advantage.

Muhlenberg and Swarthmore trade goals in the fourth period with Mazzucco stopping five shots to keep the Garnet at a comfortable distance. Coughlin notched his 12th score of the year at 12:14 and fellow senior Tim Chryssikos put in his team-leading 24th goal at 12:14. Donlea scored his final goal with 5:17 left on the clock with Harman tallying the final score, his 14th of the season, at 1:39.

The Mules were unable to take advantage of a 47-24 shot advantage, as Mazzucco set up shop in front of the net. The freshman's 12.82 saves per game ranks him in the top five in the Conference.

Chryssikos contributed one goal and three assists, pushing his points per game average to 4.27, good for a top five spot in the Centennial.

Swarthmore's next game will mark the final appearance on Clothier Field for the Garnet senior men's lacrosse players. Come out at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd to watch Swarthmore take on 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference match-up.

April 19th, 2005

Centennial Conference-leading Franklin & Marshall College (17-12, 10-3 CC) scored six runs in the second inning en route to a 9-4 win over Swarthmore in Lancaster, Pa. on Tuesday afternoon.

The Diplomats touched up Alex Ryan-Bond '07 (above), last week's Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week, for five hits in that fatal second frame, opening up a 6-0 lead.

The bottom of the Swarthmore order got the Garnet offense rolling in the third, smacking five hits of their own off F&M starter Jeremy Knox.

Ben Mendelson '08 and Scott Dalane '08 connected on one-out singles to put runners on first and third for Swarthmore. First baseman Jody Fisher '05 kept the hit parade going, cracking a single to drive in Mendelson and move Dalane to third. Up next was Scott Young '06, who lofted a fly ball to right, deep enough to bring in Dalane. Second baseman Patrick Christmas '08 then hit a double and shortstop Sam Faeder '07 followed with an RBI single, extending his hit streak to six games. Designated hitter Travis Allen '08 hit the ball to third, which the Diplomats' third baseman was unable to field cleanly, allowing Christmas to score to cut the F&M lead to 6-4.

The Diplomats put two more on the board in the bottom of third, pushing their advantage to 8-4 before scoring once more in the seventh for the final margin.

Ryan-Bond took the loss for the Garnet, throwing all eight innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, striking out three while walking four.

The Garnet mounted a rally in the top of the seventh as Jody Fisher '05 led off with a double, and scored on a Young single. Patrick Christmas '08 then followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. Ian Adelsetin grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Young out at third and Faeder followed with a walk to load the bases. Travis Allen '08 hit a fielder's choice grounder to short that forced Adelstein out at third and scored Christmas to make it 7-5. Graffeo placed fourth out of twenty-one competitors, recording a mark of 11.02 meters (36'2"). That toss beat her previous best (34' 9 3/4") and gave Graffeo sole possession of third place all-time in Swarthmore track and field history.

Gettysburg came out swinging in game one, getting three runs off Swarthmore starter Emily Walz for a 3-0 lead. The Name is Bond…Alex Ryan-Bond

April 15th, 2005

Garnet sophomore right-hander Alex Ryan-Bond served notice on Friday afternoon, blanking Washington College 7-0 for his first complete game shut-out in Centennial Conference action at Clothier Fields.

The Shoremen arrived on campus with a .310 team batting average, good for second-best in the Conference, and owners of a 6-3 win over Swarthmore in Chestertown on Tuesday afternoon.

Ryan-Bond made sure the Shoremen left town with heads shaking, limiting Washington College (10-10, 4-6 CC) to six hits over the span of nine innings. The sophomore exhibited excellent control, striking out four batters without issuing a free pass.

The Garnet bats got busy early, tabbing Shoremen starter Shawn Hampt for five runs in the first four innings. Sam Faeder '07, the hottest Swarthmore hitter, got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Faeder drew a one-out walk, swiped second base, and moved to third on a passed ball with designated hitter Travis Allen '08 at the plate. Allen induced a walk of his own and stole second base as Hampt retired Noah Cooper-Harris '07 on strikes for out number two. Catcher Ben Mendelson '08 looked at two pitches before hitting a seeing-eye single just inside the third base line. Faeder and Allen crossed the plate on the hit, giving Swarthmore a 2-0 lead.

Swarthmore (5-15, 3-7 CC) scored three more runs in the fourth, with the same hitters circling the base paths. Faeder reached on an error, Allen drew his second walk of the game, and Cooper-Harris worked a base on balls to load 'em up. Mendelson went down swinging for out number one, but the Washington catcher was unable to block the ball, allowing Faeder to score from third. Scott Dalane '08 made things worse for Hampt, launching a 1-1 pitch into left for a two-run double and a 5-0 Swarthmore lead.

Faeder tripled (pictured above) and scored in the seventh, while Dalane made the score 7-0 in the eighth, crossing the plate on Jody Fisher's fifth career triple, a moon shot to right-field.

The Washington pitching staff had been stingy of late, allowing only 131 hits on the season and walking only 49 batters, both second-best in the Centennial.

Faeder continued to swing a sizzling bat, collecting two hits and scoring three runs on the day, raising his season batting average to .281. Over the last 7 games, the lanky shortstop is hitting at a .476 clip with four extra-base hits, five runs, and three RBIs.

Dalane put in a solid afternoon at the plate as well, reaching base in all four at bats, collecting two hits, two walks, two runs batted in, and one run scored.

But the day belonged to Ryan-Bond, earning his first collegiate victory after facing only 34 Shoremen batters. The burly right-hander deftly changed speeds and arm angles, getting all four of his strikeout victims looking and induced 14 Shoremen ground ball outs.

Swarthmore hits the road for their next contest, traveling to Carlisle, Pa. tomorrow, April 16th, for a 1:00 p.m. double header at Dickinson College.
