Garnet Man-Up in Win over Bears

April 6th, 2005

Swarthmore scored on two extra-man opportunities in the third period and freshman goalie Frank Mazzucco (above) made 17 saves as the Garnet defeated Ursinus College 12-9 on Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action.

The Bears were hot early, scoring five goals on eight shots in the first period, enjoying a 4-1 at one point. Freshman Justin Reinke led the charge, scoring twice for Ursinus (2-6, 0-3 CC). Swarthmore closed the period strong, with goals by seniors Tom Coughlin and Jeff Donlea, both assists credited to freshman Chris Harman, cutting the lead to 5-3.

The Garnet retained the momentum when Donlea struck again in the second period, putting home a pass from Coughlin at the 8:06 mark. Senior Paul Chung knotted the score at 5-5, tallying an unassisted goal at 7:32 left in the half.

Ursinus' Anthony Tori gave the Bears the lead, 6-5, with a score at 4:55, but the Tide fought to even the score just before halftime. Harman one-timed a feed from Tim Chryssikos '05 with 25 seconds remaining, swing the pendulum of momentum back in Swarthmore's favor.

Jay Charles '07, encouraged by the 180 boisterous fans at Clothier Field, scooped up a ground ball off the opening face-off and bolted to the front of the net, beating Bears' goalie Matt Orlando on the left side for a 7-6 Garnet lead.

Adam Miller '08 gave Charles a breather on the ensuing face-off, immediately winning the scrum at mid-field, taking possession for the Garnet . The freshman midfielder, taking a page from Charles' book, scooped up the ground ball and sprinted towards the Bears' cage. Miller wasted little time, firing the ball past Orlando for his first collegiate goal and an 8-6 Garnet lead.

Ursinus took advantage of a Swarthmore penalty with an extra-man goal by Dane Mangin at 13:42 and then tied the contest at 9:07 with Tori's second goal of the night.

A Bears' penalty later in the third provided opportunity for the Garnet. Ryan McKenna took a feed from Coughlin and put the Garnet up 9-8 with 6:05 on the clock. Jason Lawson answered for Ursinus at 3:53 with an unassisted goal, tying the game 9-9.

Dual penalties on Mangin gave the Garnet a extra-man opportunity for two minutes near the end of the third period. Swarthmore cashed in via their man-up offense when Gavin Nurick '07 took a pass from Chryssikos and fired a rocket past Orlando for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Nurick struck again with 4:57 left in the fourth and Chryssikos bolted by three defenders for an unassisted effort at 2:40 to complete the scoring.

Mazzucco closed the door on the Bears in the fourth, making seven saves, including three heart-stoppers in the last three minutes, sending Swarthmore to their first Centennial Conference victory of the season.

Nine different players scored for the Garnet (4-3, 1-1 CC), led by Donlea with three goals and Nurick with two. Coughlin, Chryssikos, and Harman each had a goal and two assists, while Charles, McKenna, Chung, and Miller registered goals.

Reinke and Tori led the Bears with two goals apiece and Orlando made seven saves, taking the loss in goal.

Bears Overwhelm Garnet

April 5th, 2005

The Ursinus College baseball team collected 16 base hits, posting runs in six different innings to claim an 11-4 victory over Swarthmore on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action in Collegeville, Pa.

The Garnet jumped on Bears starting pitcher Clay Miller in the first with consecutive singles by Scott Young '06 and Jody Fisher '05. Ian Adelstein '08 reached base on an error by the Ursinus rightfielder, loading the bases for cleanup hitter Travis Allen '08. Miller induced Allen into a ground-ball double play, allowing Young to cross the plate with the first run of the game. Miller escaped without further damage, retiring the next hitter, Swarthmore's Andy Bender '08, on a ground ball to shortstop.

Ursinus evened the score in the bottom of the inning, using two singles and two stolen bases to put runners in scoring position for Ryan Regensburg. Garnet ace Jared Leiderman '05 immediately set Regensburg down on strikes, his Centennial-leading 42nd strikeout of the season. Ted Piotrowicz, the next batter to the plate, lifted a fly ball to right field with enough depth to score Tommy Hermann, making it a 1-1 game.

The Bears added two more in the second and another run in the fourth, giving Miller a 4-1 lead. The floodgates opened up in the bottom of the fifth, as Ursinus put four more runs up on the board. Most of the damage occurred when Bret Jenkins ripped a two-run triple to right center. More runs came in the bottom of the sixth, as the Bear used two hits and a Garnet error to push their lead to 10-1. Swarthmore benefited from a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning on a high note.

The Garnet carried that momentum to the plate in the top of the seventh, smacking four hits to generate three runs. Second baseman Patrick Christmas '08 lined a one-out single to center and moved up to second on a balk by Miller. Noah Cooper-Harris '07 followed with a single to center, driving in Christmas to make it 10-2. Designated hitter Ben Mendelson '08 struck out for the second out, but centerfielder Scott Dalane '08 smoked a double to center, scoring Cooper-Harris. Dalane advanced to third on another balk by Miller and came around to score on Young's single to make it 10-3 Ursinus.

The Bears score one more time in the eight and Ryan Smith set Swarthmore down in order in the ninth, sending Ursinus (4-14-1, 2-1 CC) to their fourth win of the season.

Leiderman (1-5) went six innings for the Garnet (2-11, 0-3 CC) striking out one while walking two.

Dalane lead Swarthmore with a double, a single, an RBI, and run scored while teammate Young contributed two base hits, a run, and an RBI.

Swarthmore looks to split the season series with Ursinus on April 8th when the Bears come to Clothier Fields for a 3:30 p.m. game.

Garnet Turn Collegeville Into Splitsville

April 5th, 2005

Christina Procacci '06 drove in two runs on two hits and Marianne Klingaman '07 struck out five Bears as Swarthmore defeated Ursinus 5-2 in the second game, earning a split of a Centennial Conference doubleheader  Tuesday afternoon in Collegeville, Pa.

The victory ended a streak of 26 consecutive Ursinus wins over Swarthmore, dating all the way back to 1992. The previous Garnet victory over the Bears was a 5-4 decision in game one of a doubleheader.

Ursinus grabbed a 2-0 lead after three innings before Swarthmore scratched out a run in the top of the fourth. Procacci led off the frame with a walk, her Centennial-leading 24th base on balls. Conference Player of the Week Mary Mintel '05 popped out before shortstop Katie Gold '08 sacrificed Procacci to third. Klingaman was up next and helped her own cause by driving in Procacci with an RBI single, making the score 2-1 Bears.

The Swarthmore offense broke out in the top of the fifth as three hits and two Ursinus errors led to three Garnet runs and a 4-2 Swarthmore lead. Val Marone '05 led off the inning with a double, Kelly Siano '07 followed with a single to left, and Sam Brody '05 loaded the bags up, reaching on an Ursinus error. Danielle Miller '06 was called out on a pop-up in the infield, but Procacci kept the rally alive, driving in Marone with a single up the middle. Mintel followed with a ground ball to short, but Ursinus was unable to record an out, allowing two more Swarthmore runs to cross the plate.

Klingaman stranded three Ursinus base runners in the last three frames, and Swarthmore added an insurance run in the seventh to give their sophomore right-hander a 5-2 lead. Ursinus got a hit in the bottom of the seventh, but Klingaman fanned Jessica Cherry and Erin McHugh to earn her second consecutive win.

Procacci reached base three times for the Garnet (7-15, 1-1 CC), increasing her on-base percentage to .549, third best in the Conference. Siano, Marone, Klingaman, and Gold all had base hits for Swarthmore.

Klingaman (3-5) scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run while walking only one. The six strikouts give Klingaman a total of 26 on the year, tying teammate Amy DiBiase '08 for fourth-best in the Centennial.
