Golf: Swarthmore Swings Third-Best at Wilmington Spring Classic

MIDDLETOWN, De. -- Senior Michael Cullinan finished fifth, followed by freshman Michael Bernasek in sixth, as the Garnet took third place at the Wilmington Spring Classic on March 12-13 at Frog Hollow Country Club.

Cullinan carded a pair of 79s for a score of 158, finishing ten strokes of the leader John Purple from Wilmington College. Bernasek struggled on day one with an 83, but got rolling on day two, carding the second best score of the day (76) for a total of 159.

Junior Zach Moody shot 83-84 to finish in a tie for 11th with a 167 while classmate Ed Goldstein posted matching 84s to finishing in a tie for 14th with a score of 168.

Sendelsky Named CC Hitter of the Week

 Swarthmore, PA- Swarthmore College infielder Christine Sendelsky ( Edison, NJ - John P. Stevens) has been named the Centennial Conference Hitter of the Week for the week of Mar. 12.

Sendelsky, a freshman, made a huge splash in her first six collegiate games as the Garnet competed at the 2006 SmashHit Spring Break Tournament in Savannah, Ga. Sendelsky led the Garnet in batting average (.476, 10 for 21), slugging percentage (.762), hits (10), runs (six), doubles (four), and total bases (16).  In Swarthmore's sweep of a double header with Division I Savannah State on Mar. 9, Sendelsky went 5-for-7 with four runs scored and five RBI.

Sendelsky is the second Swarthmore freshman in 2005-06 to earn Centennial Player of the Week honors after the first week of competition. Jennifer Wang, an outside hitter on the Garnet volleyball team, earned the honor on Sept. 9, 2005.

Swarthmore completed the spring break trip with a 3-3 record, the first time the team has a .500 winning percentage since 1991.

Swarthmore Competes at Bobcat Open

AUSTIN, Tx. -- Kathy Feeney '09 and Faith Pampel '09 hit their seedings in the 1500 meters as Swarthmore opened the 2006 outdoor season at the Bobcat Open at Texas State on Friday evening.

Feeney, seeded at 5:15.00, missed the time by a hair, finishing 11th ina time of 5:15.33. Pampel was right behind in 12th position, finishing in a time of 5:20.30 (she was seeded at 5:20).

Competing in the meet was host Texas State, Southland Conference rival Texas-San Antonio as well as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who will join the SLC next year. Also competing were teams from Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Pan American, Trinity (Tx.), Incarnate Word, and Texas Lutheran.

The Garnet take three weeks to prepare for the Widener Open, set to run at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1.

Swarthmore Competes at Bobcat Open

AUSTIN, Tx. -- Erik Saka '09 finished seventh in the 3000 meters and Ross Weller '08 ran sixth in the 800 meters as Swarthmore opened the 2006 outdoor season at the Bobcat Open at Texas State on Friday evening.

Saka finished in a time of 9:23.12, crossing seventh out of 15 runnners.

Weller, seeded at a time of 2:04.00, lowered out-ran that time, finishing in 2:02.07.

Competing in the meet was host Texas State, Southland Conference rival Texas-San Antonio as well as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who will join the SLC next year. Also competing were teams from Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Pan American, Trinity (Tx.), Incarnate Word, and Texas Lutheran.

Kenyon Lords Over Garnet

SYLVAN LAKE PARK , Fla. - Kenyon College (3-1) turned a 6-5 halftime advantage into a 15-6 victory over Swarthmore on a warm Saturday evening in Florida.

The Garnet assumed the early lead, taking a 4-2 advantage midway through the first period. The Lords fought back to tie the game at 4-all at the end of the first period and held a 6-5 lead when the halftime horn sounded.

Sophomore midfielder Adam Miller and freshman Bradi Covert led the Garnet with two goals and three ground balls apiece. For Covert, it was the first two scores of his collegiate career.

Senior Matt Perez added a goal and an assist for Swarthmore (1-1).

Garnet goalie Frank Mazzucco made eight saves in goal.

Swarthmore returns home for its next game; the Garnet welcome Richard Stockton to campus on Saturday, March 18 for a 1:00 p.m. game. The game will take place on Cunningham Fields, a change from the usual Clothier Field location.

Swarthmore Wins PA State Championship

Jessica Larson '06 reached the main draw singles' final and Candice Cherk reached the semi-finals as the Garnet won the 2006 Pennsylvania State Collegiate Badminton Team Championship.

Larson also had success in two of the doubles' draws reaching the mixed doubles C draw final with partner Young Lou from Boston University.

Larson and Cherk teamed up in the women's doubles main draw, advancing as far as the semi-finals.

Pacers Leave Garnet in Starting Gate

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Junior infielder Sam Faeder and outfielder Scott Young '06 extended their hit-streaks as the Swarthmore dropped both ends of a doubleheader versus Marywood University on Friday afternoon.

The Pacers (6-5) won game one by a score of 10-3 and then got solid pitching in game two, limiting the Garnet to two base hits while winning 7-1.

Young, the senior captain, reached base in all three trips to the plate in the first game. The Alabama native was 2-for-2 with a walk, stole two bases, scored once, and drove in his seventh run of the season (tying Faeder for the team lead). Faeder rapped out two base hits, scoring one run in the process.

A couple of Garnet ball players seeing their first collegiate action established lifetime memories: freshman outfielder Nick Orton rang out his first collegiate hit with a two-bagger while classmate Alex Avellan drew a base on balls in his first collegiate plate appearance.

The sting left the Garnet bats (hitting a solid .358 as a team after three games) in game two. Young colored the stat sheet once again, collecting one of Swarthmore's hits, a walk, and another stolen base. Young has hit safely in all six games this season, seven total going back to the 2005 season.

Young reached base in the first inning, eventually giving the Garnet a brief 1-0 lead after scoringon freshman Grant Yoshitu's sacrifice fly.

It was the first collegiate RBI for Yoshitu.

Faeder extended his team-leading hit streak to eight games, dating back to 2005. The junior infielder has flourished after moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup, posting a .524 batting average in the first six games of the season.

Freshman Dylan Smith gave Swarthmore five quality innings in his first collegiate start, allowing only one earned run while fanning two.

Swarthmore (3-3) makes its 2006 home debut in one week, welcoming local rival Widener University to Clothier Fields for a 3:00 p.m. game on Thursday, March 16.

Sendelsky, Garnet Romp to Sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Freshman infielder Christine Sendelsky continued her torrid spring break week, totaling five hits and five RBIs as Swarthmore swept a doubleheader with Division I foe Savannah State on Wednesday afternoon at the SmashHit Spring Break Tournament.

The Garnet (3-3) won the first game 11-1 and then rolled in the game two , 11-3. Swarthmore holds a .500 winning percentage after six games for the first time since 1991.

Sophomore Emily Walz (1-1) took the ball in the first game, allowing only two hits over seven innings of work, striking out a career-high 10 batters.

Sendelsky led the Swarthmore offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Senior Danielle Miller went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while freshman Lauren Walker hit 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and scored twice.

The Garnet runs kept coming in the second game as Sendelsky and junior Kelly Siano both were a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Sendelsky drove in two runs and scored twice, while Siano scored a pair of runs and drove in one. Sophomore Katie Gold added two-run triple in a nine-run fourth inning.

Junior Marianne Klingaman (2-0) earned the victory after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing four hits while striking out 10 and walking one.

Swarthmore makes its 2006 home debut against Immaculata this Thursday, March 16 at 3:00 p.m.

Garnet Make Shortt Work of Salve Regina

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Senior midfielder Niamh Shortt tied her career-high with a game-high five goals and an assist to propel Swarthmore to a 14-6 win over Salve Regina on Thursday evening.

The Garnet (2-0) got a pair of hat-tricks from midfielders Katie Crawford '07 and Rachel Jordan '08 to earn their third consecutive win, dating back to the 2005 season.

Swarthmore controlled the mid-field play against the Seahawks (1-2), led by junior Lindsay Roth (eight ground balls, three caused turnovers) and senior Heidi Fieselmann (five ground balls, three CT).

Sophomore Susannah Blair made seven saves in goal for the Garnet.

Short has scored at least three goals on six separate occasions in at Swarthmore and now has 51 goals in her career.

The Garnet make their 2006 home debut this Tuesday, March 14 at 5:00 p.m., welcoming the Moravian Greyhounds to Clothier Field. Swarthmore will then play host for the annual Seven Sisters Tournament on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19.

Garnet Roll To Third Straight Win

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Junior infielder Sam Faeder had three hits and classmate Ian Adelstein added two hits and two runs as Swarthmore won its third consecutive game, defeating Eastern 8-5 on Wednesday evening.

The Garnet (3-1) are off to their best start since 1986, when they opened the season 4-0.

Freshman right-hander Sean Varsolona collected the first win of his collegiate career, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing only three earned runs, striking out one batter. Sophomore Justin Chen pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save, striking out three batters while walking only one.

Faeder went 3-for-5 with a walk, run scored, and his fourth stolen base of the young season. Adelstein, in addition to his two base hits, added an RBI and a stolen base while junior first baseman Noah Cooper-Harris went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Freshman shortstop Conor Casey continued to show patience at the plate, going 1-for-1 with four walks and an RBI.

The Garnet complete their 2006 Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Marywood on Friday afternoon. Swarthmore makes its 2006 home debut on Thursday, March 16 against Delaware Country rival Widener University at 3:00 p.m.
