Pacers Leave Garnet in Starting Gate

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Junior infielder Sam Faeder and outfielder Scott Young '06 extended their hit-streaks as the Swarthmore dropped both ends of a doubleheader versus Marywood University on Friday afternoon.

The Pacers (6-5) won game one by a score of 10-3 and then got solid pitching in game two, limiting the Garnet to two base hits while winning 7-1.

Young, the senior captain, reached base in all three trips to the plate in the first game. The Alabama native was 2-for-2 with a walk, stole two bases, scored once, and drove in his seventh run of the season (tying Faeder for the team lead). Faeder rapped out two base hits, scoring one run in the process.

A couple of Garnet ball players seeing their first collegiate action established lifetime memories: freshman outfielder Nick Orton rang out his first collegiate hit with a two-bagger while classmate Alex Avellan drew a base on balls in his first collegiate plate appearance.

The sting left the Garnet bats (hitting a solid .358 as a team after three games) in game two. Young colored the stat sheet once again, collecting one of Swarthmore's hits, a walk, and another stolen base. Young has hit safely in all six games this season, seven total going back to the 2005 season.

Young reached base in the first inning, eventually giving the Garnet a brief 1-0 lead after scoringon freshman Grant Yoshitu's sacrifice fly.

It was the first collegiate RBI for Yoshitu.

Faeder extended his team-leading hit streak to eight games, dating back to 2005. The junior infielder has flourished after moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup, posting a .524 batting average in the first six games of the season.

Freshman Dylan Smith gave Swarthmore five quality innings in his first collegiate start, allowing only one earned run while fanning two.

Swarthmore (3-3) makes its 2006 home debut in one week, welcoming local rival Widener University to Clothier Fields for a 3:00 p.m. game on Thursday, March 16.
