3/19: Procacci Ties CC Walk Mark; Bulldogs Sweep Garnet

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Swarthmore dropped a pair of games to host DeSales 8-2 and 8-6 on Suday afternoon. Christina Procacci '06 tied the Centennial Conference record for career walks (77) with her sixth-frame base on balls in game two.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Jennifer Cybularz RBI triple and extended the lead to 2-0 with an unearned in the fourth as Elise Wilk kept the Garnet bats dormant. Swarthmore starter Emily Walz '08 kept the game close with six strikeouts through the first four frames.

The Bulldogs broke the game open in the fifth while the Garnet defense committed some uncharacteristic miscues, scoring three runs and added three more in the sixth.

Swarthmore's offense came in the fifth inning. first baseman Kelly Siano '07 led off with a single, and scored on an error that allowed Dahlia Perez '08 to reach second. Procacci then brought Perez around with a single.

Walz took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season.

The hosts jumped out to another early lead in game 2, scoring three in the bottom of the first on a three-run blast by first baseman Danielle Jenson. Swarthmore came back with two in the top of the second on RBI singles by junior Melissa Lavan and freshman Kristin Caspar and tied the game at three in the third when Lauren Walker '09 doubled in fellow freshman Christine Sendelsky.

DeSales took the lead back in their half of the third, though, and forged ahead with three more in the fourth off of starter Marianne Klingaman '07 (3-1). The Bulldogs added one more in the sixth before the Garnet mounted a last-inning comeback.

Senior Danielle Miller and Sendelsky singled to start the innings, Katie Gold '08 brought Miller home with a double, and Siano cleared the bases with a double, cutting the lead to 8-6. But the next three Garnet went down and the rally fell short.

Women’s Tennis: Regals Bow Down to Garnet

March 19th, 2006

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Swarthmore swept three doubles matches on its way to a 6-3 win over the #21 Cal-Lutheran Regals.

Juniors Sonya Reynolds and Marissa Matthews continued their recent dominant play with an 8-0 win over Bri Smalling and Michelle Sekyua at #1 doubles. Fellow juniors Sara Sargent and Waverly Lutz eased past Suz Nomura and Blair Murphy, 8-5, and seniors Emily Townsend and Jenna Adelberg took care of Amy Vogt and Victoria Ybarra, 8-2.

Reynolds rebounded from her first loss of the season on Saturday to defeat Smalling (ranked eight in the West region) 6-4, 6-3 at #1 singles. Lutz and Sargent cleaned up at the bottom of the singles lineup, defeating Vogt and Ybarra, respectively, by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Park fell to Sekyua at #2, 7-5, 6-2, #3 Matthews dropped a 7-5, 6-3 match to Nomura, and Townsend split two sets with Murphy at #4 before falling in a super set; the final tally was 7-6 (3), 3-6, (10-6) in Murphy's favor.

Swarthmore improves to 4-2 on the season with the win and now enters the meat of the Centennial Conference season. Next up for the Garnet is Saturday's 1:00 match at Gettysburg.

Garnet Split with Eastern

March 19th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Righthander Alex Ryan-Bond '07 allowed just three hits and no earned runs as the host Garnet won game two 3-2 to salvage a doubleheader split with Eastern University on a windy Saturday afternoon. Eastern defeated Swarthmore 17-12 in game 1.

In game one, Swarthmore took an early 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Second baseman Kevin Kooi '09 drew one of his three game-one walks, movd to second on a groundout, and scampered home on a Scott Young '06 double. Young moved to third on a wild pitch, and RBI machine Patrick Christmas '08 got the job done with a sacrifice fly to right.

Eastern starter Tim Hoskins bore down, though, and the Eagles bats got hot against Garnet hurler Sean Varsoloa '09. The visitors plated eight runs over the next three innings to take a 10-4 lead before blowing the game open with a seven-run sixth. Eastern strung together five singles and a walk before finally getting the big hit, a two-run double, from designated hitter Matt LeSeur.

Swarthmore stayed calm, though, and responded with five runs of heir own in the bottom half of the sixth. Young got the rally going with his third hit of the day, catcher Andy Bender '08 smashed a two-run double, and shortstop Conor Casey '09 brought in two more with a single.

But Swarthmore was quickly running out of innings, and even after a three-run seventh, fell short by five runs.

All of the game two scoring came in the fourth frame. Eastern used two Garnet errors and a Matt Hohn double to pick up two unearned runs in the top half, but Swarthmore responded.

Christmas and centerfielder Ian Adelstein '07 led off with singles, and sophomore DH Travis Allen and Bender drew walks, the latter forcing in a run. A wild pitch allowed Adelstein to score, and Scott Dalane '08 came through with a sac fly, driving in the game-winning run.

Eastern put men on first and third with one out in the top of the sixth, but Casey and first baseman Sam Faeder '07 turned an inning-ending double play. The Eagles threated once again in the seventh, getting a man to third after a wild pitch, but Ryan-Bond got LeSour to fly out to preserve the victory.

Ryan-Bond scattered four hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out three.

Bender finished the day 5-for-7 with a pair of doubles. Adelstein also had four hits, while Young added three.

Faeder slapped a single in each game, extending his season-long hit streak to nine games.

The Garnet return to action on Tuesday, travelling to Philadelphia Biblical for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

2006 Seven Sisters Lacrosse Championship

3/18: Swarthmore Streaks to 7 Sisters Championship Game

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet women easily won twice on Saturday afternoon, playing rude host at the 15th annual Seven Sisters Lacrosse Championship.

In the first game, the Garnet jumped all over the Blazers and built an 11-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 14-0 victory. Four Swarthmore played scored a pair of goals--senior Niamh Shortt, juniors Lindsay Roth and Athena Samaras, and freshman Anna de Regt, who also caused four turnovers. Swarthmore's solid defense kept the pressure off of sophomore goaltender Susannah Blair, who had to make just four saves to earn her second career shutout.

Elms senior netminder Shelia Murphy made a tournament-high 17 saves in the losing effort.

The second round game brought in No. 2 seed and long-time rival Haverford College. With a sizable group of Garnet fans drawn to Clothier Stadium for the guaranteed excitement of a Swarthmore-Haverford matchup, the home team controlled the first half of play and rolled to a 13-5 triumph. Junior Lindsay Roth led the Garnet offense, picking up a first-half hat trick.

Swarthmore won nearly every draw, keeping the ball away from the Ford sticks, and ran up a 8-0 lead before the break. The hosts continued to pour it on and led 12-0 before Tripti Tewari got the Fords on the board with 19:10 to play, ending the Garnet and goalkeeper Susannah Blair's 100:50 scoreless streak in the 2006 tournament.

Haverford, playing without injured star senior Margaret Sampson, would go to score five consecutive goals, including two from freshman Liz Koelmel, before Swarthmore senior Niamh Shortt closed out the scoring.

This is Swarthmore's fourth appearance in the Seven Sisters Championship game. The Garnet won their lone title in 1995.

The host Garnet will face Wellesley, conquerers of top-seed Vassar and No. 4 seed Mount Holyoke, tomorrow in the championship game at 1:00 p.m. on Clothier Field, while the Fords will face Mount Holyoke on the same field at 11:00 a.m. for third place.

Men’s Tennis: Bantams Fight Off Garnet

March 18th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore's afternoon match with NESCAC-foe #21 Trinity (CT) was chock full of exciting volleys, but the Garnet fell 4-3 to the Bantams on Sunday afternoon in the Mullan Tennis Center.

Jon Reiss '07 and Jonathan Lo '08 pulled off singles and doubles wins to keep Swarthmore in the hunt.

No. 1 doubles Zach Rodd '06 and Brian Park '06 played "eye for an eye" tennis against Trinity's Brett Ramsay and Brian Marsden. Trinity often found themselves ball watching, as Swarthmore put away shots. In return, Trinity would take advantage when Swarthmore got stuck, by driving balls down the alley. By the sixth point, both teams were on top of their game. Every time Swarthmore would win a rally, Trinity would follow up with a win. The game of cat and mouse finally came to an end with Park's run of perfectly placed shots sending the duo to a 8-6 win.

At No. 2 doubles, Reiss and Lo played extremely well, defeating Jon Hart and Jimmie Ames. Reiss effortlessly worked the court, leaving his opponents scrambling to reach the ball; and Lo was quick to support. Most of their best points included skilled net play.

Both Reiss and Lo went on to take their singles' opponents. Reiss easily trumped his opponent Ramsey 6-4, 6-0. Lo stole the first set from his opponent, coming back to win in a tiebreaker. His opponent returned the favor, taking the second set. Lo worked too hard to watch his best efforts wasted. He decidedly took the match over Jon Hart 7-6, 5-7, 6-3.

For their next match, the Garnet will welcome 11th-ranked Washington & Lee to campus on Saturday, March 25 for an 11:00 a.m. match.

March 18th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Team work was the name of the game Saturday afternoon when the Garnet women (3-2, 1-0 CC) hosted Centennial Conference rival Bryn Mawr. Swarthmore opened its defense of the Conference title in spectacular fashion, dropping a mere match on its way to a 8-1 victory.

A split squad also took on #2 Washington & Lee on Saturday afternoon as well, falling to the Lady Generals 8-1.

The lone Garnet point was very significant; Swarthmore juniors Sonya Reynolds and Marissa Matthews, recently ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, defeated fourth-ranked Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham 9-8 (7-3) at No. 1 doubles.

Action at the Mullan Tennis Center vs. Bryn Mawr started off with Swarthmore's ordinarily No. 3 and No. 5 players, Jennie Park '09 and Erica Lukoski '08, playing No. 1 doubles. The pair overcame a slow start to outduel the Owls' Karen Ginsburg and Jessie Tarlov 8-4.

Pioneers Slosh Past Garnet

March 17th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In an error-plagued battle for local bragging rights, the Widener Pioneers rolled past Swarthmore 18-8 on a windy Thursday afternoon on Clothier Fields.

The Pioneers (9-2) have now won 10 consecutive meetings - dating back to 1993- between the two schools located on the southern tier of Route 320.

A ragged game at the onset (the two team combined for nine errors in the first three innings) turned one-sided affair as the Pioneers put up five runs in the fifth and plated six more in the sixth. Jamie Schild's two-run triple highlighted the Widener fifth while Josh McLeod's three-run home run to left was the big Pioneer hit in the sixth.

McLeod's shot cleared the new fence surrounding the baseball diamond on Clothier Fields. It is the first home run hit over the shiny black chain link, estimated to travel about 375 feet.

The Garnet (3-4) were led by a pair of Swarthmore infielders: freshman Kevin Kooi had a career-high three hits and scored two runs while junior Sam Faeder added two hits, scoring three times.

Faeder extended his hit-streak to nine games with a single to left in the seventh and then followed up with an RBI triple in the eighth. The junior leads the Garnet with a .480 batting average, .640 slugging percentage, and a .588 on-base percentage.

Swarthmore plays on Clothier Field in its next set of games; the Garnet will host Eastern on Saturday, March 18 with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader. Swarthmore has already seen Eastern this season, defeating the Eagles 8-5 on March 9 in Florida.

3/14: Garnet run past Greyhounds

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Athena Samaras scored three first-half goals as the Garnet rolled to a 14-0 lead over the Moravian Greyhounds on their way to a 15-5 victory.

Heidi Fieselmann '06, taking over the attack position from the graduated Elle Forbes '05, opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 2:31 into the game. Sophomore midfielder Megan Sanborn captured the ensuing draw, her second of three straight draw controls to open the game. The Garnet would win the next two draws as well and 9 of 12 in the first half, keeping the ball out of Greyhound sticks.

Samaras got on the board at 4:49, converting a Niamh Shortt '06 feed. Shortt picked up a goal of her own just 1:40 later, and juniors Katie Crawford and Lindsay Roth soon found the net as well.

Anna de Regt '09 came off the bench after Roth's tally and quickly made her presence felt, hitting Fieselmann with a nice pass right in front of of the net for a pretty goal. Two minutes later, de Regt picked up a goal of her own off a Shortt feed.

Samaras added two more goals, de Regt converted a free position shot, and Kelsey Hatzell '09 also scored as the Garnet surged to an 11-0 halftime lead.

Swarthmore continued the onslaught in the second half, with Crawford, Shortt, and Hatzell adding goals before Moravian got on the board.

The Greyhounds scored the next four goals before Marissa Schaffer '09 scored off a free position with just 3:54 to play. Greyhound midfielder Lindsey Lustrino closed out the scoring with two minutes later, completing a hat trick.
