Garnet Roll To Third Straight Win



FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Junior infielder Sam Faeder had three hits and classmate Ian Adelstein added two hits and two runs as Swarthmore won its third consecutive game, defeating Eastern 8-5 on Wednesday evening.

The Garnet (3-1) are off to their best start since 1986, when they opened the season 4-0.

Freshman right-hander Sean Varsolona collected the first win of his collegiate career, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing only three earned runs, striking out one batter. Sophomore Justin Chen pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save, striking out three batters while walking only one.

Faeder went 3-for-5 with a walk, run scored, and his fourth stolen base of the young season. Adelstein, in addition to his two base hits, added an RBI and a stolen base while junior first baseman Noah Cooper-Harris went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Freshman shortstop Conor Casey continued to show patience at the plate, going 1-for-1 with four walks and an RBI.

The Garnet complete their 2006 Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Marywood on Friday afternoon. Swarthmore makes its 2006 home debut on Thursday, March 16 against Delaware Country rival Widener University at 3:00 p.m.
