Cox Earns First to Lead Garnet Women at Haverford Quad Meet

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sophomore Nicole Cox earned a first-place finish in the women's high jump, while senior Lauren DeLuca missed first place by the slimmest of margins in the 800 meter run to lead the Swarthmore College women's indoor track team at the Haverford Quad Meet on Sunday evening.

Cox's jump of 4'11.75" was good for first place at the quad meet and eighth-place all-time at Swarthmore College. The jump - tied for the best in the Centennial Conference this season - also easily met Centennial qualifying standards. Read the rest of this entry »

CARLISLE, Pa. - It's a split on Super Sunday for the Swathmore men's and women's swimming teams, as the Garnet men (5-3, 4-1) earned their third consecutive victory of the new year, defeating Dickinson 114-91 for a crucial Centennial Conference win just 12 days before the Conference championships while the women (4-5, 2-4)  - led by another 3-for-3 performance from senior All-American Anne Miller  (200 freestyle (2:01.32), 500 freestyle (5:24.4) and 1,000 freestyle (11:17.82) - were narrowly edged by the homestanding Red Devils 110-95. Winter Weather Alters Swat Basketball Yet Again; Home Games vs Johns Hopkins Moved to Monday

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  The major snowstorm that dumped over two feet of snow across the Mid-Atlantic has postponed Sunday's home basketball games versus Johns Hopkins for a second time. The games - originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but moved to Sunday because of the storm - will now take place on Monday, February 8th. The women's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. from Tarble Pavilion, with the men's game taking place at 8:00 p.m.

Old Man Winter Hits Swarthmore Athletics; Basketball, Swimming, Track All Postponed to Sunday

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The major snow storm that is expected to hit the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday and has forced the postponement of several Swarthmore College athletic events. Both of the home men's and women's basketball games against Johns Hopkins have been postponed until Sunday, February 7th, at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The men's and women's swimming meet at Dickinson (2:00 p.m.) and the men's and women's track meet at Haverford (11:00 a.m.)  have also been  postponed until Sunday.

Stockbower Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team

SWARTHMORE, Pa. --  Kathryn Stockbower  '11 of the Swarthmore College women's basketball team has been named to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team, as voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced today.

The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II and Division III, and NAIA, colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team. Swarthmore Womens Soccer Makes Sibling Adoption Through Friends of Jaclyn Foundation

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for children and families dealing with pediatric brain tumors. Jaclyn Murphy and her family founded the organization, inspired by Jaclyn’s experience as a nine-year-old cancer patient. The foundation matches children with a sports team, followed by a ceremonial adoption.

The 2009 Swarthmore women’s soccer team adopted Tessa a 13 year old girl whose twin brother was a victim of a pediatric brain tumor. She experienced several tough years during her childhood, spending a lot of time in hospitals with her family. Now, as a young teen, Tessa enjoys music, drawing, writing poetry, and spending time with her friends. Read the rest of this entry »

Mules Wear Down Garnet 64-50

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The dynamic duo of freshman Will Gates and senior captain Matt Allen combined for 38 of Swarthmore's 50 points,  but it wasn't enough to combat an outstanding performance from Muhlenberg sophomore forward Spencer Liddic, who dominated the paint with 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Mules (12-8, 10-3) past the visiting Garnet 64-50 on Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action.

Gates and Allen combined to connect on seven three-pointers to keep Swat (5-15, 4-9) in the game until the final whistle, but it was the Garnet's shooting from inside the arc - just 13-of-41 for the game - that was the difference in the Mule victory. Read the rest of this entry »
