SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Kathryn Stockbower '11 of the Swarthmore College women's basketball team has been named to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team, as voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced today.
The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II and Division III, and NAIA, colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team.
Stockbower - a preseason All-American and the reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Year - is once again proving herself to be one of the best players in Division III women's basketball. She currently leads the Centennial Conference in rebounding (13.5 rpg) and scoring (18.1), while ranking sixth and 39th nationally in those categories respectively. For the 2009-10 season, Stockbower has a Centennial Conference leading 18 double-doubles while scoring in double-figures in all 21 of the Garnet's games. For her career, Stockbower has 60 double-doubles - just 19 shy of the NCAA Division III record - and has scored in double-figures in a Centennial Conference-record 68 consecutive games.
In December against Ursinus, Stockbower became the seventh player in program history reach 1,000 career points. She is currently sixth in all-time points (1,241), and with 959 career rebounds is just 41 rebounds shy of becoming just the second player in Swarthmore history to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds.
For her career, Stockbower has stockpiled numerous awards and honors: 2009 Centennial Conference Performer of the Year, 2009 WCBA All-Region, 2008 Centennial Conference First Team, Centennial Conference Player of the Week (four times ), ECAC Performer of the Week (four times) and D3Hoops.com Team of the Week (three times).
Stockbower becomes the third Swarthmore student-athlete named Academic All-District this season; men's soccer players Brett McLarney '12 and David D'Annunzio were named to the first and third teams respectively.
In the classroom, Stockbower is majoring in Biology and German Studies. At the completion of the basketball season, she will be studying abroad in Germany.
Stockbower will now move on to the national ballot, which will be announced in two weeks.
