Streaking Swat Men Topple Dickinson 114-91; Swat Women Fall to Red Devils 110-95
CARLISLE, Pa. - It's a split on Super Sunday for the Swathmore men's and women's swimming teams, as the Garnet men (5-3, 4-1) earned their third consecutive victory of the new year, defeating Dickinson 114-91 for a crucial Centennial Conference win just 12 days before the Conference championships while the women (4-5, 2-4) - led by another 3-for-3 performance from senior All-American Anne Miller (200 freestyle (2:01.32), 500 freestyle (5:24.4) and 1,000 freestyle (11:17.82) - were narrowly edged by the homestanding Red Devils 110-95.
The Garnet men's swim team didn't let the snow slow them down on Sunday. The men jumped off the blocks quickly to an early one-two-three freshmen finish in the 1000-yard freestyle led by freshman Jake Benveniste touching the wall in 10:37.43. Freshmen classmates Josh Satre (10:39.51) and Charles Hepper (10:41.82) followed Benveniste.
Hepper continued to have a great day going one-two with sophomore Dante Fuoco in the 200-yard butterfly. Hepper built a huge lead and finished in 2:04.85. Fuoco finished in 2:13.60.
Swarthmore freshmen finished off the Red Devils in the 500-yard freestyle in dominating fashion, clocking in the top three times again with Tyler Hanson (4:57.74), Daniel Duncan (5:04.06) and Josh Satre (5:05.37) leading the way.
On the women's side of the pool, the trio of freshman Hannah Gotwals (2:17.72), sophomore Naomi Glassman (2:19.09) and senior Casey Osborn (2:21.80) topped the 200-yard butterfly.
Anne Miller's and junior Allison Bishop teamed up in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle going one-two in both events for the Garnet. Bishop finished right behind Miller in both with times of 11:31.78 in the 1000-yard free and 5:33.06 in the 500-yard free.
The Garnet women got off to a great start winning their first three events in the 400-yard medley relay, 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle.
Swarthmore returns to the pool on Wednesday February 10th when it travels to Conference foe Washington College. Swimming starts at 6:30 PM.
