COMPLETE DOUBLES RESULTS
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Swarthmore seniors Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent won the Doubles Championship at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regionals on the campus of Mary Washington Monday afternoon.
By winning the Southeast Regional at the end of September, Reynolds and Sargent earn All-American status for the 2006-07 season. The duo are the first Swarthmore women to earn the distiction in doubles competition. Reynolds was also an All-American for singles play in 2004-05.
Reynolds and Sargent defeated the top-seeded pair from Carnegie Mellon, Mona Iyer and Amy Stolach, 8-5 to earn an invitation to the ITA Fall Nationals at Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL on October 12-15.
The pair are the first Swarthmore doubles' combination to win the Doubles' Championship; Anjani Reddy '04 captured the singles' championship at the ITA Southeast Regionals in 2000. Sargent won the 2005 Centennial Conference Doubles' title, the last of the individual championships, while Reynolds has been named First Team All-Centennial in doubles each of the past three seasons.
Reynolds, seeded third, also reached the semifinal round in singles' action before falling to No. 2 seed Katie Tabb from Washington & Lee 6-3, 6-0.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Both the men's and women's soccer programs at Swarthmore are enjoying plenty of success in the first month of the season and now both teams have been recognized with top-10 rankings in the weekly D3kicks.com Mid-Atlantic region rankings.
The Swarthmore women (5-1-1 overall, 1-1 Centennial) roared through the first three weeks of the season without a loss, led by freshman forward Katie Kanuka (eight goals) and a stout defense (0.55 goals against average). The Garnet went over 417 minutes without allowing a goal - the impressive streak came to an end on Sunday in a tough 3-2 loss at Gettysburg. Swarthmore is listed eighth in the weekly Mid-Atlantic Region computerized rankings.
The Garnet men (5-2 overall, 1-1 Centennial), also employ a strong defensive back line led by captain Brendan Grady '08 and Jeff Kushner '09 (0.96 GAA) and an opportunistic offense (eight different players scored) were listed tenth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Swarthmore women will resume Centennial play on Tuesday evening at Clothier Field, welcoming the Muhlenberg Mules (ranked 13th in the D3Kicks.com regional list) for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Garnet men travel to Chestertown, Md. on Wednesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial match with Washington College.

SINGLES' CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
DOUBLES' CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Swarthmore senior Sonya Reynolds won two more singles' matches to advance to the semifinals of the Championship Bracket at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships held on the campus of Mary Washington University. Reynolds also teamed with classmate Sara Sargent to claim a spot in the finals of the Doubles' Championship Bracket.
Reynolds continued her strong start to the fall season, taking down No. 9 seed Lauren Caire from Washington & Lee 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16. Reynolds then made quick work of the No. 6 seed Mona Iyer from Carnegie Mellon, winning 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinal round. The Swarthmore senior will face No. 2 seed Katie Tabb from W&L in the semifinals on Monday morning.
In doubles' action, Reynolds and Sargent downed Barbara Baskins and Katie Gaskins from Franklin & Marshall 8-2 in the quarterfinals and then upset the second seed, Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham from Washington & Lee, by a score of 8-6. The Swarthmore tandem will face the top-seeded pair from Carnegie Mellon, Iyer and Amy Stolach, at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Swarthmore forwards Natalie Negrey '07 and Katie Kanuka '10 scored twice in 2:19 but the Garnet were unable to complete the comeback as Gettysburg (5-2-1, 2-0-0 CC) handed Swarthmore its first loss of the season 3-2, in Centennial women's soccer action at Clark Field Sunday afternoon.
Gettysburg senior forward Katie Myers scored the home team's first two goals. Senior Steph Smith assisted on both, and sophomore forward Erin Miller netted the game winner and added an assist.
Myers'first goal came at 24:25 as the senior corralled a rebound off a Smith shot, and banged it home for a 1-0 Bullets' lead. The goal ended a scoreless streak of 417:56 by the young Garnet defense.
The 1-0 score held for the next 45 minutes until Smith ran down the ball on the Swarthmore end line and centered to a charging Myers, who gave Gettysburg the 2-0 lead at 69:28.
Ten minutes later, the Bullets built the lead to 3-0 when freshman midfielder Kerry McKenna fed Erin Miller, who beat Swarthmore goal keeper Anna de Regt '09 in a 1-on-0 situation at 79:04.
The Garnet (5-1-1, 1-1 CC) comeback began late in the game as Kanuka fed a through-ball to Negrey, who made a move to get past Bullets' keeper Danielle St. Pierre for her first goal of the season at 85:58. Kanuka, the Centennial Conference's leading goal scorer, made it a one-goal game two minutes later, scoring her eighth goal of the season on breakaway set up by classmate Julia Luongo at 88:17. Gettysburg thwarted any Swarthmore chances at the tying score, remaining unblemished in Conference play.
St. Pierre and de Regt made four saves in goal each.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Centennial rival Muhlenberg at 7:00 p.m. at Clothier Stadium.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg sophomore forward Chris Bayon brought a physical Centennial men's soccer contest to an abrupt close, scoring the game-winner with 32 seconds left in the first overtime to send the Bullets to a 2-1 victory over visiting Swarthmore on Saturday night.
A key Centennial match-up early in the season - Gettysburg was ranked pre-season number one by the coaches while Swarthmore was picked third - saw 46 fouls and six cards between the two squads.
Garnet sophomore midfielder Yoi Tibbets broke up a scoreless affair in the early stages of the second half, tallying his second score of the season at 54:11. Swarthmore junior midfielder J.P. Faunes crossed the ball which was headed on by sophomore defender Jeff Kushner to Tibbets, who connected on his own header for the goal.
Swarthmore got a break late in the game when the Bullets were forced to play a man-down after one of the Gettysburg players was sent of with a second yellow card in the 87th minute. The momentum was short-lived as the Bullets counter-attack produced the tying goal (scored by junior midfielder Jesse Gemberling-Johnson) at 87:33.
The game went into extra time with the Garnet getting off two of the first three shots, including a big save by Bullets' keeper Adam Finkel on a shot by Swarthmore midfielder Pat Christmas '08.
The decisive score started on the backline with Finkel sending the ball out to a Bullets' back. From there Gettysburg worked up the sideline eventually making a strong run into the Swarthmore end. Junior midfielder sent a strong pass into the center of the field and Bayon put home the game-winner from the left corner.
Finkel tallied four stops in goal while Swarthmore counterpart Ryan Sutcliffe recorded two saves in defeat.
Swarthmore travels to Washington (Md.) on Tuesday, Sept. 26 for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game.

ITA CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES DRAW
ITA CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES DRAW
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Swarthmore senior Sonya Reynolds won two singles' matches over Centennial Conference opponents in straight sets at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships held on the campus of Mary Washington University Saturday afternoon.
Reynolds, seeded No. 3, defeated Danielle Barish from Franklin & Marshall 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Championship Singles and then eased past Lydia Bull from Washington (Md.) 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Rachel Wallwork continued her strong play, taking down Sarah Loeffler from Haverford 6-1, 6-1 in the Championship Singles Bracket. Swarthmore senior Sara Sargent split her singles' matches in the same bracket, falling to Rebecca Morse-Karzen from Mary Washington 6-4, 6-1 before taking down Alexandra Glickman from Haverford 8-4. Also playing in the Championship Bracket was senior Waverly Lutz, who fell to Stephanie Kurti of Mary Washington 6-2, 6-0 but came back to defeat Alice Yu from Elizabethtown 8-0 in the consolation bracket.
Reynolds and Sargent, ranked No. 3 in the Championship Doubles Bracket, won both of their matches to advance to the quarterfinals. The seniors downed Mary Kate Kelly and Brittany Popaca from Moravian 8-1 in the first round and then rolled past Kelly Nakamura and Claire Weiss from Carnegie Mellon 8-0 in round two.
The Championship Singles Bracket will continue on Sunday morning with the doubles play resuming at noon.

MATCH BOX SCORE
WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel rallied, down two games, to defeat visiting Swarthmore 3-2 in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet (9-4, 2-1 CC) were led by senior outside hitter Erica George with 13 kills and 22 digs while fellow captain Katherine Gold '08 added five blocks.
The Green Terror improve to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial, winning by scores of 25-30, 25-30, 30-17, 30-24, 15-9.
Garnet sophomore outside hitter Jen Wang contributed a team-high 14 kills and 25 digs, classmate Erin Heaney added 22 digs, and freshman setter Kearney Bangs passed out 43 assists.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26, traveling to Bryn Mawr for a 7:00 p.m. match.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Gettysburg junior forward Savannah Ruth scored twice in the second half to lead the 18th-ranked Bullets to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Swarthmore in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon.
Swarthmore (5-3 overall, 0-1 Centennial) opened up an early 1-0 lead when forwards Abigail Fischer '08 and Lindsay Roth '07 got loose in the Bullets' defensive end. Fischer squeezed off a shot that Gettysburg goalie Katherine Corkhill pushed away, right to the stick of Roth, who banged the ball home for her second goal of the season at 3:31.
The Garnet had another golden opportunity in the 30th minute - senior Summer Spicer cracked an outside blast that Corkhill saved, senior forward Julia Morrison swiped at the rebound, and Corkhill fell on top of the ball. Swarthmore was awarded a penalty stroke but Corkhill turned away Spicer's attempt to hit the top right corner of the cage, keeping the score 1-0 in Swarthmore's favor.
The Garnet held an 8-6 shot advantage through the first 35 minutes, while the Bullets took three penalty corners to Swarthmore's two.
The Bullets (5-2 overall, 1-0 CC) evened the affair early in the second half converting a penalty corner at the 46:20 mark. Gettysburg senior forward Maura Downey put hard shot on goal and Ruth tipped the ball into the cage for her second score of the year.
Gettysburg took a 2-1 with another goal by Ruth, this one coming in the same fashion as her first; freshman forward Lexie Hearn controlled the penalty corner at the top of the circle and sent a blast into the scrum. Ruth deftly re-directed the shot past Swarthmore goalie Karen Lorang at 64:25 to secure the Bullets' sixth consecutive victory over the Garnet.
An even contest through-out, the Garnet had a slight advantage in shots (19-18) while Gettysburg took more corners (9-6).
Corkhill made 11 saves in goal for the Bullets while Lorang turned away six scoring attempts.
Swarthmore returns to action at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Bryn Mawr while Gettysburg travels to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins on Sept. 27.

COMPLETE MEN'S RESULTS
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Swarthmore freshman Nyika Corbet (pictured) led six Garnet women to top-50 finishes and senior Vernon Chaplin ran 20th at the Main Line Invitational on Haverford College Thursday afternoon. The annual event featured runners from Villanova, Naval Academy, the College of New Jersey, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Widener.
Corbet made a strong kick at the end of the 5K course, passing a large group of runners to finish fifth out of 84 runners in a time of 18:10. Sophomore Emily Stanley ran 13th in a time of 18:28, classmate Bess Ritter clipped in 23rd position, freshman Erin Ronhovde ran 27th in 19:30, and sophomore Kathy Feeney found 29th place. The Swarthmore women kept coming as sophomore Faith Pampel came in 41st (19:50) and freshman Lauren DeLuca ran 49th (20:22).
Chaplin brought in the Swarthmore flag, posting a time of 20:30 over the four-mile loop against 118 competitors. Teammates Jon Shoop '08 (21:02) and Ross Weller '08 (21:06) ran 40th and 43rd, respectively while sophomore Erik Saka finished 60th in a time of 21:28.
The Garnet point their efforts toward the next race, the Paul Short Invite on Sept. 29 at DeSales University. The race is set to kick off at 3:15 p.m.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Elizabethtown senior forward Meg Policicchio scored two goals and teammate Val Bawell contributed two assists, leading the Blue Jays to a 4-0 victory over visiting Swarthmore (5-2) in non-conference field hockey action Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Jays (6-1) struck first with a goal by Laura Rinick at 16:47. Elizabethtown, ranked 13th in the nation, out-shot Swarthmore 7-2 in the first half.
The offensive exploits continued for the Blue Jays in the second half - Polucicchio put home her first goal at 42:53 and followed ten and a half minutes later with another goal, giving E-town a 3-0 lead. Blue Jay sophomore forward Andrea Miles notched the fourth score off a penalty corner at 56:49.
Swarthmore senior goalie Melissa LaVan made 11 saves in goal while E-town counterpart Kristen Callaghan made three stops for her fourth shutout of the season.
The Garnet continue their torrid schedule, welcoming 14th-ranked Gettysburg to cozy Clothier Stadium on Sat, Sept. 23.
