Garnet Rally Falls Short in Central PA
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Swarthmore forwards Natalie Negrey '07 and Katie Kanuka '10 scored twice in 2:19 but the Garnet were unable to complete the comeback as Gettysburg (5-2-1, 2-0-0 CC) handed Swarthmore its first loss of the season 3-2, in Centennial women's soccer action at Clark Field Sunday afternoon.
Gettysburg senior forward Katie Myers scored the home team's first two goals. Senior Steph Smith assisted on both, and sophomore forward Erin Miller netted the game winner and added an assist.
Myers'first goal came at 24:25 as the senior corralled a rebound off a Smith shot, and banged it home for a 1-0 Bullets' lead. The goal ended a scoreless streak of 417:56 by the young Garnet defense.
The 1-0 score held for the next 45 minutes until Smith ran down the ball on the Swarthmore end line and centered to a charging Myers, who gave Gettysburg the 2-0 lead at 69:28.
Ten minutes later, the Bullets built the lead to 3-0 when freshman midfielder Kerry McKenna fed Erin Miller, who beat Swarthmore goal keeper Anna de Regt '09 in a 1-on-0 situation at 79:04.
The Garnet (5-1-1, 1-1 CC) comeback began late in the game as Kanuka fed a through-ball to Negrey, who made a move to get past Bullets' keeper Danielle St. Pierre for her first goal of the season at 85:58. Kanuka, the Centennial Conference's leading goal scorer, made it a one-goal game two minutes later, scoring her eighth goal of the season on breakaway set up by classmate Julia Luongo at 88:17. Gettysburg thwarted any Swarthmore chances at the tying score, remaining unblemished in Conference play.
St. Pierre and de Regt made four saves in goal each.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Centennial rival Muhlenberg at 7:00 p.m. at Clothier Stadium.
