George Hits Century Mark, Garnet Roll in Maryland

September 21st, 2006

MATCH BOX SCORE

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior outside hitter Erica George became the first Swarthmore volleyball player to accumulate 1,000 career kills and Garnet head coach Harleigh Leach won her 50th game as Swarthmore rolled to a 3-0 victory at Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference volleyball action Tuesday night.  The Garnet (9-3, 2-0 CC) earned their second conference victory of the season by scores of 30-23, 30-25, 30-28.

George led Swarthmore with a game-high 17 kills, eclipsing the 1,000-kill mark on the first point of the second game.  She now has 1,012 career kills - a school record, ranking just outside the top 25 all-time in Centennial history.

Freshman Johanna Bond led Swarthmore with 14 digs while sophomore libero Erin Heaney put up 10 digs.  Freshman setter Kearney Bangs led the Garnet offense with 33 assists and five service aces.

Junior middle blocker Karen Berk led the Garnet defense with six blocks, bring her career total to 277 (good for 17th all time in Centennial history).

Leach's overall coaching record stands at 50-75, making her the most successful volleyball coach at the school.  In just four-plus seasons, she has led the Garnet a Centennial playoff berth (first-ever), the 2005 Greyhound Premier Invitational Championship, and its best showing at the Seven Sisters Championship.  Her current squad is now 9-3 overall, the best 12-game start in school history.

The Garnet resume Centennial play on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Westminster, Md. to face McDaniel at 1:00 p.m.

Garnet Clip Aggies, Remain Unbeaten

September 20th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore got goals from freshmen Julia Luongo and Katie Kanuka plus another strong defensive effort on their way to a 2-0 win over non-conference foe Delaware Valley on a warm evening at Clothier Stadium.

For the second straight game, the Garnet went with a goalie-by-committee in place of injured sophomore Lauren Walker, with junior Kristen Traband playing the first half and sophomore Anna de Regt the second.  The pair, along with the Garnet backline, extended the team's scoreless streak to 393:31.

Luongo flashed a powerful leg while opening the scoring just 8:53 into the match.  Luongo received the ball with space around her about 30 yards away from the net, wound up, and blasted the ball over the head of Aggie goalkeeper Emily Joyce and into the net.  The shot was of a caliber rarely seen in any game of soccer.

Luongo found her way into the box sore once again in the 25th minute, when she hit a square ball to Kanuka, who lofted the ball into the upper left corner from about 20 yards out.  Kanuka now has a Centennial Conference-high seven goals on the season.

The Garnet continued the offensive attack throughout the half but was repeatedly stymied by Joyce, who made four stops in the half - all of them with a degree of difficulty.  Kanuka saw one of her shots tipped over the net and another pushed just wide of the net, and senior Natalie Negrey was also denied at close range.  Traband made a pair of saves to preserve the 2-0 lead going into the break.

Both teams had trouble generating offense in the second half; while Swarthmore took 13 shots and forced Joyce to make fives saves, the quality of the opportunities was not as strong as in the first half.  But it did not matter as the Garnet clamped down on defense, limiting the Aggies to just one shot; de Regt did not have to make a save.

Swarthmore (5-0-1) will put its undefeated season on the line once again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at CC foe Gettysburg.

September 17th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Wellesley won its Seven Sisters-record eighth field hockey championship (sixth in seven years) by defeating Wheaton (Ma.) 4-1 on Sunday morning on Clothier Field.  Twin sisters Julia and Lydia Parzych (Auburn, MA - Auburn), senior forwards for the Blue, each scored a goal, while teammate Sara Stein (Ann Arbor, MI - Greenhills) took home tournament MVP honors.

Senior midfielder Beth Kelley (Lynnfield, MA - Lynnfield) opened the scoring with 20:14 to play, hitting the ball from the perimeter into the right corner of the goal, and Wellesley took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Senior midfielder Jenn Shrull  (Windham, NH - Pinkerton) netted Wellesley's second goal, with the assist going to Lydia Parzych after the latter received a Kelley penalty corner.  Parzych picked up another assist 10 minutes later when sister Julia tipped in her outside shot.  Lydia picked up a goal of her own with 6:13 to play before Wheaton senior Rachel Sminkey (White River Junction, VT - Hartford) spoiled the shutout at the 5:24 mark off of a pass from sophomore forward Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT - Branford).

Wellesley sophomore goalkeeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA - St. Stephens and St. Agnes) made eight saves in the win, while Wheaton senior Mary Catherine Bell (Columbus, IN - Miss Porter's School) made 12 stops.

Kanuka, Garnet Defense Turn Up Win in Lancaster

September 17th, 2006

LANCASTER, Pa. - Swarthmore (4-0-1, 1-0 CC) faced off against the F&M Diplomats (5-1, 0-1 CC) Saturday afternoon with both entering the competition undefeated. The Garnet went on to trump the Diplomats 2-0 led by a pair of scores from freshman forward Katie Kanuka and a combined shut-out by goalkeepers Kristen Traband '08 and Anna de Regt '09.

F&M held a ten-game win streak over the Garnet from 1993-2002 - since then Swarthmore has held the upper hand, winning three of the last four match-ups.

A strong defensive battle materialized with F&M's senior goalkeeper Robyn Jones able to turn away 12 of the 13 shots sent her way prior, but Swarthmore's offense proved too much as the Garnet converted two of their six shots into goals.

The Diplomats brought on the pressure early in the game, yet Garnet senior forward Natalie Negrey found her way to the corner and delivering a handful of strong shots that left Swarthmore leading the shot category (3-2) at half-time.

Thirty-five minutes into play the match remained scoreless, but with less than 10 minutes in the half Swarthmore freshman midfielder Monica Cody fed classmate Kanuka a brilliant pass. Kanuka dribbled up left field, past the last defender, and drilled the ball to the top right corner to earn her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

In the second half, the Diplomats came out playing hard, their defense almost impenetrable. Despite the strong back line, Kanuka was able to break through. Diplomat keeper Jones challenged Kanuka to a loose ball, and Kanuka won out. While Jones was down, Kanuka saw an opportunity. She launched a shot to an unguarded net, and secured her sixth goal of the season at the 80:46 mark.

Traband made her first start of the season in place of injured sophomore Lauren Walker.  The junior captain notched a pair of saves and de Regt continued the strong play in the net with two stops of her own in the second half.

The Garnet's next match will be against Delaware Valley at Clothier Stadium on Tues., Sept. 19 - the game will kick off at 7:00 pm.

Garnet Stu Up Win in Central PA

September 17th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielders Stu Leon and Ladule Lako lo Sarah scored first-half goals and junior goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe made them stand up as Garnet men's soccer got past host Dickinson 2-0 in their 2006 Centennial Conference opener in Carlisle, Pa.

Physical play dominated early, and tight refereeing led to both teams picking up double-digit first half foul calls.  Neither club could generate much offense; the first shot of the match did not come until the 18th minute of play.

Leon's goal came with 24:40 to play in the half.  Junior captain Pat Christmas ran onto a ball in the open on the left side of the field, spun, and immediately hit a left-footed cross back into the center.  Leon got free of his defender, leaped, and headed the ball to the left of Dickinson netminder Rodrigo Barbosa and into the net.

The offensive drought resumed, and it looked like the match would remain 1-0 headed into the half when junior midfielder Michael Bonesteel got the ball on the left wing.  Bonesteel hit a centering pass, but a Dickinson defender was in position to trap and clear the ball.  But the defender missed the ball, and it trickled through to a wide-open Lako lo Sarah, who took a few dribbles before teeing off and giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Dickinson had just four shots in the first half despite taking five corner kicks.  The Red Devils had one good scoring opportunity late in the half but the shot came in right at Sutcliffe for his only save of the half.

The Red Devils immediately took command as the second half got under way, and this time they would pepper Sutcliffe with shots.  Swarthmore quickly took a defensive posture and played five midfielders and just one forward for most of the period.  Dickinson would finish with fourteen shots for the half to the Garnet's two.

But Sutcliffe, who made five stops in the half, was in command.  He got some help from the soccer gods as well, as Dickinson's Magen Mintz thought he had a goal in the 84th minute only to see the ball hit the bottom of the crossbar bounce down in front of the goal line, and be cleared away.

For the second straight game, the Garnet were without their injured center back and captain Brendan Grady '08.  Senior Duncan Gromko played all 90 minutes in his place and, along with Jeff Kushner '09, assumed vocal leadership over the back line.

Dickinson (3-3, 0-1 CC) finished the match with a 19-5 shot advantage and took 10 corner kicks to Swarthmore's zero.

Swarthmore (5-1, 1-0 CC) will continue its three-game road trip to kick off the Centennial Conference season next Saturday night at Gettysburg at 7:00 p.m.  The Bullets also won their conference opener, 2-1 over Haverford in double overtime.
