GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE. Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall forward Brandon Corday lofted a 35-yard shot over the head of Swarthmore goaltender Zach Weimar '10 and into the net with 00:36 to play to give the visiting Diplomats a 1-0 win on a cool Saturday evening at Clothier Stadium.

Corday won the ball with a little bit of space around him with around 40 seconds left, took a dribble, and, still on the run, hit a left-footed shot just under the crossbar.

Swarthmore came close to scoring several times earlier in the match, even hitting the post once.  Sophomore forward Evan Nesterak caused a 'clang' in the first half while trying to score a quick-strike goal with a defender right with him.  F&M controlled much of the first half, though, taking five shots to Swarthmore's three while forcing Weimar to make three saves.

Play became more physical in the second half and hostilities nearly erupted between the two teams on multiple occasions.  Diplomat goalkeeper Ed Stelz earned a yellow card in the 58th minute after colliding with Swarthmore midfielder Yoi Tibbetts '09, and Garnet sophomores Jeff Kushner and Ladule Lako Lo Sarah were later given cautions as well.

Swarthmore had nearly all of the chances in the half as Stelz had to make six saves to Weimar's zero.  The Garnet's best opportunity came in the 73rd minute.  Andres Freire '10 started things off with a corner kick to Kushner, who headed the ball towards the right post.  A Diplomat defender trapped the ball and tried to clear it away, but it went right to Nesterak, who got a shot off but saw Stelz make the save.

The Diplomats (7-1-1, 3-0-1 CC) finished with a 12-11 shot advantage.

Swarthmore (6-3, 2-2 CC) will step out of conference play for Tuesday night's match with local rival Widener.  Game time in Chester, Pa. is 7:00 p.m.

GAME BOX SCORE

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Swarthmore women's soccer team tied its season high with four goals, rolling to a 4-1 road win over Centennial Conference foe Washington (Md.) on a damp Saturday afternoon in Chestertown, MD.

The Garnet (7-1-1, 3-1 CC) are off to their best nine-game overall start and four-game Centennial start in school history.

Garnet senior forward Natalie Negrey (pictured) got the visitors on the board early when her shot from the right side found the back of the net just 7:52 into the match.  Washington came back to tie the game just under eight minutes later when Megan Russell fed a wide-open Sarah Yarbrough for a goal.

The score remained knotted at one until, with under five minutes to play in the half, Negrey passed the ball behind Washington netminder Caroline Grier to teammate Katie Kanuka '10, who had no trouble converting the empty-netter.

Swarthmore extended their lead to 3-1 with 36:32 to play when Danielle Tocchet '08 scored her first of the year off a Kanuka feed.  The Garnet continued to control the flow of the game and finished off the Shorewomen with 5:14 remaining when Negrey scored her second unassisted goal of the match.  Freshman midfielder Liz Lopez, who had three shots and was awarded the game ball by her teammates following the contest, made nice play to help Negrey get free for the goal.

The two-goal game for Negrey was her first since September 1, 2004 vs. Neumann.

Kanuka's goal, her conference-leading ninth of the year, moves her within four of the program's all-time single-season scoring record, held by Kristen Tucker '90.

Sophomore Anna de Regt played the first 76:44 in goal for Swarthmore, making one save.  Junior captain Kristen Traband played the final 13:16 and did not have to make a stop.

The Garnet's dominance of the match was reflected in their 26-3 shot advantage.

Swarthmore will look to make it three wins in a row on Wednesday evening when they host CC-foe Ursinus at 7:00 p.m.

Morrison Breaks On Through Devils

September 30th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore senior forward Julia Morrison (#6) scored the game's lone goal in the first two minutes of play and the Garnet defense claimed its second straight shut-out as Swarthmore defeated the Red Devils 1-0 in Centennial field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore improves to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial while Dickinson falls to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial.

The Garnet took possession at the onset, and quickly moved the ball in the offensive zone.  A crowd of players from both teams formed in front of the net and, after three Swarthmore attempts were saved by Dickinson goalkeeper Amanda West, the ball came out to Morrison who promptly put it home to give the home team a 1-0 lead.  It is the second goal of the season for Morrison and the eighth of her career.

The Garnet entered today's game second in the Centennial, allowing only 1.35 goals per game. Swarthmore's stingy defense, led by captain Julie Monaghan '07 and Anna Baeth '09, limited the Red Devils chances on this day as well - Dickinson managed only two shots in the second half.

Swarthmore senior goalie Karen Lorang, also a captain, made three stops for the fourth shut-out of her career.  Dickinson netminder Amanda West turned away 13 shots for the Red Devils.

Swarthmore out-shot the Red Devils 17-6 for the game and took six penalty corners to Dickinson's three.

The Garnet resume Centennial field hockey play on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when Johns Hopkins (winners of five straight) arrive for a 7:00 p.m. game.

September 28th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Swarthmore freshman midfielder Dylan Langley had an assist and score the game-winning goal as the Garnet (6-2 overall, 2-1 Centennial) defeated Washington (Md.) 2-1 in Centennial men's soccer action Wednesday night.

Swarthmore midfielder Yoi Tibbetts '09 put the Garnet on the board with Swarthmore's first shot of the evening, finishing off a nice cross by Langley flicked on after a throw-in from senior defender Duncan Gromko at 21:38.  It is Tibbetts third goal of the season.

The Shoremen (4-3 overall, 1-2 CC) took advantage of free kick seven minutes later - sophomore midfielder Brian Danver tapped the ball to sophomore midfielder Brian Schultz, who drilled in his team-leading fourth score at 28:11.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Swarthmore put home the game-winner off a strong corner kick - midfielder J.P. Faunes '08 looped the ball towards the crowd in front of the net and sophomore defender Jeff Kushner re-directed the ball with a header.  The flick found its way to Langley, who put the ball home at 70:00 for his second score of the season and his first collegiate game-winner.

Luongo Shot Gives Garnet Overtime Victory

September 27th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore freshman midfielder Julia Luongo broke a scoreless tie in overtime with a 35-yard game-winner as the Garnet women's soccer team won a key Centennial Conference match 1-0 over visiting Muhlenberg on Youth Soccer in America Night at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore ended a nine-match losing skid to the Mules with the victory - the last Garnet win over Muhlenberg came in 1994 (a 3-1 win).

Swarthmore freshman Caitlin O'Neill earned the assist by playing the ball from the box back to Luongo, who hit a perfect shot over the outstretched fingers of Mule goalkeeper Shauna Henley and into the upper left corner of the goal.  Luongo had been left open after the Mules pulled their midfielders back to try to stop a prolonged Garnet offensive sequence.  Three Swarthmore reserves, sophomore Melinda Petre and freshmen Caitlin O'Neill and Taylor Rhodes maintained pressure throughout the overtime period.

Both teams played solid defense in the scoreless first half.  Each squad managed two shots on goal, but all were from far out and none of the four saves made were difficult.  Swarthmore's Katie Kanuka '10 came the closest to scoring, but her left-footed drive in the 25th minute went just right of the goal.

The second half saw more chances for both teams but only one shot on goal - a Kanuka attempt from close range that went straight to Henley.  The standout freshman took six shots on the evening but could not extend a four-game goal scoring streak.

Sophomore Anna de Regt made two saves in goal for the Garnet, while Henley finished with three stops for the Mules, who fell to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in the Centennial.

Swarthmore (6-1-1, 2-1 CC) returns to action on Sat., Sept. 30, travelling to Washington (Md.) for a 12:00 p.m. game
