SWARTHMORE, Pa. – For the Swarthmore College men’s soccer team, the 2009 season had everything needed for a storybook season - everything but the perfect ending. After recording one of the best regular seasons in program history and once again reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in dramatic fashion, the Garnet’s season ended in heartbreak, losing to lower-seeded Transylvania on penalty kicks. LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association has awarded the 2009-10 Swarthmore College volleyball team with an academic team award, the organization announced on Friday.
The AVCA Team Academic Award honors volleyball teams at the high school and college level that are successful in the classroom. Nominees include high school or college teams that have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale) or 4.10 (on a 5.00 scale) during the full academic year (both semesters or all quarters), and include all varsity athletes who competed in volleyball with the institution for any portion of the academic year. This past season, over 450 institutions have been honored with this award.
The last time the Swarthmore volleyball team earned the honor was 2006-2007. This is also the fourth time during head coach Harleigh Chwastyk's tenure that the program has earned the honor.
The Garnet open the 2010 season at the Moravian Greyhound Premier against Wilkes on Friday, September 3.
PHILADELPHIA - Swarthmore College student-athlete Rachel Wallwork '10 was named the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Tennis Performer of the Year for the second consecutive year, while colleagues Wiley Archibald '10 (baseball), Kevin Friedenberg '10 (men's lacrosse), and Stephen Youngblood '12 (men's tennis) were also selected as Academic All-Stars for their respective sports, the paper announced on Tuesday.
In order to be eligible for the All-Star teams, an athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or key reserve. Ballots for the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Star Teams, which sponsored 11 teams (baseball, golf men's lacrosse, men's rowing, men's track & field, men's tennis, softball, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's track & field, women's tennis ) this spring, were compiled and voted upon by the 28 Philadelphia-Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Garnet fans have spoken: The third consecutive ECAC Championship for the women's soccer team has been voted the best Swarthmore Athletics moment of 2009-10. The event captured an impressive 39% of the vote in the final poll, besting the men's soccer team's run to the NCAA Sweet 16 (28%) and men's swimmer Travis Pollen's national championship (19%).
