Arcadia Sweeps Garnet in Doubleheader

The Garnet dropped a doubleheader at Arcadia this afternoon losing the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 8-0 in Glenside, PA. Swarthmore falls to 2-10 on the season while the Knights improve to 10-0.

In the opener, the Garnet jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Christina Procacci '06 drew a walk and scored on a Katie Gold '08 RBI double.

Aracdia took the lead with two runs in the fifth and picked up an insurance run in the sixth.

Amy DiBiase '08 allowed one earned run as she scattered six hits and struck out five for the Garnet.

In the nightcap, Jenn Compton hit a grand slam in the second inning to lead the Knights to an 8-0 non-conference victory. Sam Brody '05, Danielle Miller '06, Gold and Melissa LaVan '07 each went 1-for-2 with a single.

The Garnet travel to DeSales for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 20. First pitch is at 1 p.m.

Garnet Speare Greyhounds

Senior tri-captain Megan Speare had four goals and an assist, while freshman Rachel Jordan added a hat-trick as Swarthmore defeated Moravian 14-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.

Speare evened the score at 1-1 with an unassisted score at the 4:18 mark. The midfielder scored three more times in the first half, the last coming with 20 seconds remaining to give Swarthmore (2-0) the lead, 6-5, for good.

The Garnet scored seven unanswered goals to start the second half, pushing their lead to 13-5 on goal by Katie Crawford '07 with 39:07 left in the game. Jordan completed her first career hat-trick with the final Swarthmore goal at the 56:52 mark for a 14-6 lead.

Swarthmore play their first contest at Clothier Field on Thursday, March 17th at 4:00 p.m. The Garnet welcome 12th-ranked Gettysburg College, the defending Centennial Conference champions, in their first conference game of the season.

Thoroughbreds Race Away With Win

Charlie McNeil raced the length of the field, scoring the game-winning goal with 6:26 remaining as Skidmore scored five unanswered goals to steal a 8-7 win over Swarthmore at Clothier Field on Saturday afternoon.

Tim Chryssikos '05 tied the contest at 1-1, scoring his fourth goal of the season with 10:26 in the first period. Defenseman Rich Jaronczyk '07 gave the Garnet an early 2-1 advantage, scoring his first goal with 2:42 left in the first.

Tom Spinella evened the score at 2-2 with his second goal of the period, finding the back of the net with just thirteen seconds remaining in the first period.

Swarthmore (1-1) put three scores on the board in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the intermission. Gavin Nurick notched an unassisted score at the 12:49 mark, Tom Coughlin '05 scored an extra-man goal off a nice feed from Coughlin at 8:28, and Nurick struck again with forty-one seconds remaining.

Nurick completed the hat trick, the first of his career, scoring just fifty seconds into the third period. Paul Chung '05 increased the Swarthmore lead to 7-3, putting home his first goal of the season with 3:23 left in the third period.

The Thoroughbreds put home their fourth goal with 1:10 left in the third, as Matt Ward finished off a pass from Joe Tynan to being the Skidmore comeback.

Skidmore tallied four unanswered goals in the final period, including Spinella's third score, a man-advantage situation that tied the contest at 7-7 with 7:46 to go.

McNeil scooped up a ground ball outside the Thoroughbreds cage, and raced unchecked to the front of the Garnet net. The sophomore midfielder fired a shot over the shoulder of Swarthmore goalie Frank Mazzucco to give Skidmore their first win on the season.

The Garnet had a couple of good opportunities late in the period, but were unable to get the equalizer past Skidmore goalie James de Gorter.

Mazzucco made 13 saves in goal for Swarthmore, while de Gorter had eight saves for Skidmore.

Swarthmore travels west for their next contest, heading to Elizabethtown College for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 16th.

Golden, Garnet Run in CA

James Golden '05 ran sixth in his 800 meter sectional and Ross Weller '08 also finished sixth in his 1500 meter sectional as Swarthmore competed in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State-Fullerton

Golden posted a team-best time of 2:00.61 in the 800, finishing just two seconds behind the winner. Weller clocked in with a time of 4:16.45, while teammates Ducan Gromko '07 (4:17.95) and Jon Shoop '08 (4:18.99) ran in one-two in their sectional.

The Garnet compete next in the Danny Curan Invite hosted by Widener College on April 2nd, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Hobbs, Fety Cruise in California

Sarah Hobbs '06 and Lauren Fety '06 each won their 1500 meter sectional heats at the 2005 Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State-Fullerton.

In a race littered with Divsion I runners, Hobbs posted the fifth-best time in school history, 4:50.00, and the seventh-best time of the meet.

Fety easily won her section in 5:18.57, beating the next competitor by almost seven seconds.

The Garnet will compete next in the Danny Curan Invite, hosted by Widener College, on April 2nd at 10:00 a.m.

St. Partick’s Day Comes Early in southern Florida

Swarthmore freshman Patrick Christmas launched a grand slam and senior co-captain Jody Fisher (above) cracked three base hits as the Garnet hitting prowess continued in a 10-6 loss to Anna Maria College in the second game of a doubleheader played in Ft. Myers, FL.

The Florida trip ended on Friday afternoon with Swarthmore dropping both ends of a twin bill, as Anna Maria took the first game 5-2. Freshman Travis Allen had two hits and a run batted in for the Garnet (2-4). Shortstop Sam Faeder '07 laced a hit and drove in a run.

Anna Maria held an early 3-0 lead when Swarthmore loaded the bases in the third inning. Christmas gave the Garnet the lead on the first pitch he saw, launching the baseball over the left center field fence for the North Carolina native's first collegiate home run.

Anna Maria regained the lead with a big fifth inning. The Garnet got two runs back in the sixth when Ian Adelstein '07 (pictured, inset) reached after getting plunked by the Anna Maria hurler. Fisher singled and Noah Cooper-Harris '07 drew a walk to load 'em up. Ben Mendelson '08 ripped a base hit, sending two runs across the plate for a 10-6 AMC lead.

Swarthmore's offense sputtered as the AMC hurlers closed the door on the hot Garnet hitters; seven of the nine in the lineup got a hit in the game.

The Garnet hope to open their home schedule on Wednesday, March 16th when Neumann College visits Clothier Fields in a 3:15 p.m. contest.

Blair Saves The Day, Garnet edge Hawks

Freshman goalie Susannah Blair '08 made an impressive debut, making the game-saving stop with 30 seconds left, propelling the Garnet to a 12-11 victory over St. Anselm College (NH) on Friday afternoon in Orlando, FL.

Lindsay Roth '07, the leading freshman scorer in the Centennial Conference in 2004, picked up where she left off, scoring a team-high four goals as Swarthmore (1-0) opened their 2005 season on spring break in Florida.

Tri-captain Ele Forbes '05 scored the game-winning goal, one of three of the day for the senior midfielder. Forbes added an assist while junior midfielder Heidi Feiselmann mirrored her teammate with a hat-trick and an assist. Tri-captain Megan Speare '05 scored a goal and handed out two assists, while freshman Megan Sanborn notched the first goal of her career.

Blair and the Garnet took a 6-3 lead at halftime and behind 12 saves from the rookie goalie, held on to defeat the Hawks (0-2).

Swarthmore return to eastern Pennsylvania in preparation for a 4:00 p.m. road match at Moravian College on Tuesday, March 15th.

Garnet Fall To #4 Muskingum and Bethany in FL

Swarthmore dropped a pair of contests on Thursday, dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Behtany (WV) in the morning, and then fell 5-0 to fourth-ranked Muskingum in Orlando, FL.

The Garnet resume their Florida schedule on Friday with a 10:40 a.m. game vs. Mount Union and a 2:40 p.m. contest against Eastern.

Garnet Roll to Victory over Pomona

Swarthmore ended their southern California trip by cruising to an 8-1 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Monday afternoon.

Sonya Reynolds '07, Sara Sargent '07, Elli Suzuki '06, and Marissa Matthews '07 claimed victories in singles' and doubles' action to propel the Garnet to their second victory of the spring season.

Reynolds won her third straight match at No. 1 singles, defeating Molly Burman 6-2, 6-1 and combined with Waverly Lutz '07 in No. 1 doubles to squeak by Jennifer Wilcox and Brittany Biebl 9-8 [7-4].

Suzuki took care of business in No. 2 singles, beat Biebl 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 and combined with Sargent in No. 2 doubles, defeating Margot Filstein and Burman 8-6.

Matthews won her second match of the season, taking the No. 4 singles point by beating Filstein 6-1, 7-5. Matthews teamed up with Emily Townsend '06 to win the third doubles match, 8-3, over Lea Hartog and Guthrie.

Sargent won 7-6, 6-2 in No. 5 singles, beating Guthrie while teammate Sonia Vallabh '06 won 6-4, 6-0 over Hartog in the No. 6 singles.

In their next match, Swarthmore (2-1) will open their Centennial Conference schedule, traveling to Haverford College on March 19th at 12:00 p.m. Results

Mendelson, Garnet Rally For Win

Catcher Ben Mendelson '08 drove home left fielder Scott Young '08 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, sending Swarthmore to a rousing 10-9 victory over MacMurray College in Ft. Myers, FL.

Swarthmore found themselves down 8-1 in the early innings before exploding for six runs in the fifth. Designated hitter Travis Allen '08 came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and MacMurray leading 9-7. Allen ignited the rally with a two-out single and before it was over the Garnet had plated three runs and evened their record at 2-2 on the season.

Jared Leiderman '05 pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the victory while Mendelson, Young, and center fielder Scott Dalane'08 had three hits apiece.

The Garnet dropped their early game, 14-3 to New Jersey University at Terry Park.

Swarthmore will face Olivet College in their next contest, a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 9th.
