All nine starters reached base for the Garnet, with seven different batters getting a hit

Mintel Starts 2005 With a Bang, Garnet Drop a Pair

Mary Mintel '05 slammed the first pitch she saw in 2005 for a two-run home run, yet Garnet were unable to come away with a win, falling 5-3 to Concordia and 12-3 to Indiana Wesleyan in Orlando, FL.

Mintel, five double and one four-bagger in 2004, gave Swarthmore the early 2-0 advantage by drilling the first offering over the left-field fence.

Marianne Klingamann '07 took the loss for Swarthmore in the first game, going the distance before surrendering a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman Katie Gold cracked two hits in her collegiate debut for the Garnet.

Swarthmore 7, Goucher 6

March 5th, 2005

Tri-captain Tim Chryssikos '05 scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining as the Garnet opened the 2005 season with a 7-6 victory over the Goucher Gophers Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore called its final time-out with a tick under two minutes showing on the clock and the Garnet maintaining possession in the offensive attack zone. Chryssikos isolated himself behind the cage and made a couple of runs at the right side of the goal. Each time a Goucher defender managed to head off the senior attacker. Chryssikos made one final sprint, leaving his feet to spin back towards the goal. The senior squared his shoulders, firing the ball past Goucher keeper Reeves Craig for his third goal of the day.

The Garnet won the ensuing face-off and attempted to run the clock out. The Goucher defenders intensified their pressure and forced a Swarthmore turnover on the back line. The Gophers successfully cleared the ball into the attack zone and called their final time-out with thirty seconds remaining.

Goucher worked the ball around the perimeter, hoping to find a crack in the Garnet defense. Swarthmore midfielder Jay Charles '07 pressured up on a Gopher reversal pass, forcing the Goucher player to put the ball on the deck. Charles scooped up the ground ball, his fifth of the day, and raced down the field as time expired.

Swarthmore (1-0) jumped all over the Gophers to start the game, taking advantage of an early man-advantage situation, as Gavin Nurick '07 scored the first goal with 11:06 left in the first period. Senior attack Jeff Donlea gave the Garnet a two-goal advantage two minutes later, scoring unassisted at the 9:14 mark.

The Gophers countered, getting a goal from Dan Flemholz off a feed from Brent Shea with 1:23 left in the opening period. Goucher was first on the board in the second quarter, a midfielder Binz Hansen scored an unassisted goal at the 7:58 mark.

Chryssikos, a 2004 All-Centennial selection, answered with an unassisted goal of his own, with 6:59 to go in the half, giving Swarthmore a 3-2 lead.

Goucher tied the score with 4:59 go, as midfielder Dan Duff took a feed from Mike Zirrolli, and put it past Garnet keeper Frank Mazzucco '08. The Garnet re-gained the lead with 1:36 left in the half as freshman Chris Harman scored his first career goal of a pass from Chryssikos.

Swarthmore was able to take a two-goal lead into the intermission with some timely execution. The Garnet had possession with thirty seconds left in the half, and head coach Pat Gress decided to use their final time-out of the half to set up a play.

Chryssikos, in possession of the ball, sprinted from behind the goal and leapt into the air, much like his game-winner. Only this time he lofted a pass to cutting midfielder Ryan McKenna '07. The sophomore one-timed the ball into the back of the net with 0:02 on the clock for the 5-3 Swarthmore lead.

Chryssikos gave the Garnet a 6-3 lead, scoring his second goal of the afternoon just forty-three seconds into the third period. The Gophers cut the lead to a single goal, getting scores from James Clement (8:04) and Hansen (2:51), off assists from Flamholz.

Flamholz continued Goucher's comeback, tying the contest at 6-6 with his second goal of the afternoon. The Gophers took advantage of an extra man situation as Ross Nuchuwoitz set-up Flamholz in front of the net with 9:44 remaining in the game.

Mazzucco earned his first career win in net, making 20 saves in the process. Gophers keeper Craig made 18 saves in the losing effort.

Flamholz led the Gophers (2-2) with two goals and two assists, while Hansen added two goals of his own.

The Garnet were lead by the hat trick from Chryssikos, who added a pair of assists. In their next contest, Swarthmore will host Skidmore College on Saturday, March 12th at 1:00 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse 2005 Team Outlook

March 1st, 2005

Swarthmore men's lacrosse team enters the 2005 season loaded with experience on offense and an infusion of youth on defense. Head coach Pat Gress and his staff return four players who tallied at least 20 points in 2004, and look to mix in ten exciting freshman, all with a chance to make an immediate impact. Gress, entering his 10 th season, has been diligently preparing the Garnet thru the winter months for five exciting non-conference games and the ultra-competitive Centennial Conference schedule.

Anchoring an experienced offensive attack in 2005 will be senior tri-captain Tim Chryssikos (Ellicott City, MD / Loyola Bakefield), All-Centennial Honorable Mention selection in 2004. The attackman led the Garnet last season in scoring with 25 goals and 24 assists (7th in the Centennial) for 49 points, accumulating the ninth-best points per game (3.27) in the conference. Classmate Jeff Donlea (Burke, VA / Thomas Jefferson) is an experienced returning attackman who scored 19 goals last season, and will look to fill the void left by the graduation of Joe DeSimone (103 career goals)

A proven playmaker in the midfield is senior tri-captain Tom Coughlin (Lutherville, MD / Gilman), who finished second on the team with 15 assists in 2004. A trio of sophomores, midfielders Ryan McKenna (Oakdale, NY / Connetquot), Gavin Nurick (Wilton, CT / Phillips Exeter) and Jay Charles (Chadds Ford, PA / Tatnall, DE) made a significant impact on the Garnet in 2004, and enter the current season expecting to improve on the sixth place finish.

McKenna finished fourth on the squad with 25 points and 19 goals, including a career-high four scores in an 11-5 victory over Ursinus College. Charles, one of the strongest players on the team, handled the lion's share of the face-offs, winning 53 % of the face-offs he encountered (sixth-best in the Centennial). Nurick picked up 31 ground balls and had 5 points last season.

Tri-captain Charlie Sussman '05 ( Southport, CT / Choate Rosemary Hall), who has started every game in his career, will be counted on to lead an inexperienced corps of defenders. Sussman led the Garnet with 19 takeaways and was second among defenders with 38 ground balls. Gress will look for returners James Addona '05 (Levittown, NY / Hoy Trinity) and Anthony Orazio '07 (Fairfield, CT / Fairfield) to challenge for time on the defensive end.

Senior Paul Chung (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) is experienced and talented and should have a breakthrough season this year. The lone junior on the squad, Matt Perez (Floral Park, NY / Floral Park), has improved greatly since last season and will play on both the attack and midfield. Also, on defensive midfield, the Garnet will rely on seniors Troy Smith (Lutherville, MD / St. Paul's) and Rob Buechner (Cincinnati, OH / Cincinnati Country Day) and sophomore Rich Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY / Manhasset).

"The senior class is outstanding this year. Deep, talented and hard working, they have played in quite a few big games in their careers and welcome the challenge that our competitive schedule provides," proclaims Gress.

A large and talented freshmen class has mixed well in the pre-season with the fourteen returners from last year. The Garnet graduated goalkeeper Steve Isbister and turn to freshman Frank Mazzucco ( Redding, CT / Joel Barlow) to protect the net in 2005.

Defenders Dan Sartori '08(Darien, CT / Darien), Drew Bonessa '08 (Pittsburgh, PA / Shady Side), Kevin Murphy '08 (Berwyn, PA / Conestoga) and Mike Johns '08 (Wilmington, DE / St. Andrew's) had strong showings in the fall.

Freshman midfielders Adam Miller (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township), Adam Winegar (Chatsworth, NJ / Lenape) and Ivano Ventresca (Macungie, PA / Emmaus) will provide some depth to a thin midfield group. Finally, both Alex Hahn '08 (Sykesville, MD / Chapelgate) and Chris Harman '08 (New Market, MD / St. John's Prospect Hall) will play important minutes this season at attack.

The Garnet provide their fans with a first-hand look of the team in the opening weeks of March, hosting contests at Clothier Field each Saturdays afternoon. Swarthmore opens the season on March 5 th, hosting Goucher College at 1:00 p.m., and finish against sixth-ranked Gettysburg College on the 26 th at 1:00 p.m.

2005 Season Preview

March 1st, 2005

The cornerstone of the 2005 team will be the middle and long distance runners lead by the senior trio of Garrett Ash, James Golden, and Lang Reynolds.

All three bring strong pedigrees to the table: Golden won the Centennial Conference 5000 meters outdoors in 2003, Reynolds was the conference cross-country Runner of the Year in 2003, and Ash was conference runner-up in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters last winter during the indoor season.

Adding depth to the middle distances will be Vernon Chaplin '07, Duncan Gromko'07, Keefe Keeley '06, Dillon McGrew '07, and Paul Thibodeau '06. All have earned conference medals in various relays over the past two years. Juniors Jones Nauseef and Jim Kreft will contribute veteran leadership while first year's Mickey Katz, Mike Siciliano and Ross Weller will inject plenty of youth and talent.

The sprinters will aid in the team's formidability, led by junior Tyler Lyson, two-time conference finalist in the 400 meters. Contributing as well will be Sean Anderson '06, newcomer Mike Bonesteel '08, Nick Farrar '07, Ben Munda '07, and Matt Schiller '07.

Senior Brian Hwang will divide his time between the triple jump (conference finalist in 2003) and contributing to the sprint relays. Pole-vaulter Matt Singleton '07 sets his sights on contending in the conference in his specialty this spring while junior Wee Chua is the keystone of the weight throwers for the upcoming 2005 season.
