Thoroughbreds Race Away With Win
Charlie McNeil raced the length of the field, scoring the game-winning goal with 6:26 remaining as Skidmore scored five unanswered goals to steal a 8-7 win over Swarthmore at Clothier Field on Saturday afternoon.
Tim Chryssikos '05 tied the contest at 1-1, scoring his fourth goal of the season with 10:26 in the first period. Defenseman Rich Jaronczyk '07 gave the Garnet an early 2-1 advantage, scoring his first goal with 2:42 left in the first.
Tom Spinella evened the score at 2-2 with his second goal of the period, finding the back of the net with just thirteen seconds remaining in the first period.
Swarthmore (1-1) put three scores on the board in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the intermission. Gavin Nurick notched an unassisted score at the 12:49 mark, Tom Coughlin '05 scored an extra-man goal off a nice feed from Coughlin at 8:28, and Nurick struck again with forty-one seconds remaining.
Nurick completed the hat trick, the first of his career, scoring just fifty seconds into the third period. Paul Chung '05 increased the Swarthmore lead to 7-3, putting home his first goal of the season with 3:23 left in the third period.
The Thoroughbreds put home their fourth goal with 1:10 left in the third, as Matt Ward finished off a pass from Joe Tynan to being the Skidmore comeback.
Skidmore tallied four unanswered goals in the final period, including Spinella's third score, a man-advantage situation that tied the contest at 7-7 with 7:46 to go.
McNeil scooped up a ground ball outside the Thoroughbreds cage, and raced unchecked to the front of the Garnet net. The sophomore midfielder fired a shot over the shoulder of Swarthmore goalie Frank Mazzucco to give Skidmore their first win on the season.
The Garnet had a couple of good opportunities late in the period, but were unable to get the equalizer past Skidmore goalie James de Gorter.
Mazzucco made 13 saves in goal for Swarthmore, while de Gorter had eight saves for Skidmore.
Swarthmore travels west for their next contest, heading to Elizabethtown College for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 16th.
