St. Partick’s Day Comes Early in southern Florida
Swarthmore freshman Patrick Christmas launched a grand slam and senior co-captain Jody Fisher (above) cracked three base hits as the Garnet hitting prowess continued in a 10-6 loss to Anna Maria College in the second game of a doubleheader played in Ft. Myers, FL.
The Florida trip ended on Friday afternoon with Swarthmore dropping both ends of a twin bill, as Anna Maria took the first game 5-2. Freshman Travis Allen had two hits and a run batted in for the Garnet (2-4). Shortstop Sam Faeder '07 laced a hit and drove in a run.
Anna Maria held an early 3-0 lead when Swarthmore loaded the bases in the third inning. Christmas gave the Garnet the lead on the first pitch he saw, launching the baseball over the left center field fence for the North Carolina native's first collegiate home run.
Anna Maria regained the lead with a big fifth inning. The Garnet got two runs back in the sixth when Ian Adelstein '07 (pictured, inset) reached after getting plunked by the Anna Maria hurler. Fisher singled and Noah Cooper-Harris '07 drew a walk to load 'em up. Ben Mendelson '08 ripped a base hit, sending two runs across the plate for a 10-6 AMC lead.
Swarthmore's offense sputtered as the AMC hurlers closed the door on the hot Garnet hitters; seven of the nine in the lineup got a hit in the game.
The Garnet hope to open their home schedule on Wednesday, March 16th when Neumann College visits Clothier Fields in a 3:15 p.m. contest.
