M&M Gals Bring Home Sweet Victory
Mary Mintel '05 roped a two-run triple and Marianne Klingaman '07 (above) spread five hits over seven innings to lead Swarthmore to a 2-1 win over Washington College (Md.) in game two of a Centennial Conference double header in Chestertown, Md. on Tuesday afternoon.
The Shorewomen (16-12, 4-8 CC) rang out seven runs on nine hits and starter Diane Green stranded eight Garnet baserunners to win game one 7-1. Catcher Christina Procacci '06 reached base twice, once with a hit and once with a walk, and scored the Swarthmore run. Amy DiBiase took the loss for the Garnet.
Sam Brody '05 led off game two with a single and moved to second when Shorewomen starter Michelle Laque hit Procacci with a pitch. Mintel, leading the team with a .595 slugging percentage, was the next batter up and immediately hit a shot into the outfield. By the time the dust had settled, two runs had scored and Mintel stood on third with her second triple of the season.
Washington scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and loaded up the bases with two outs before Klingaman induced Meg Lucas to pop out to first base, ensuring her fifth win of the season.
Mintel had the triple and two RBIs, pushing her team-leading total to 15. Procacci added a hit, a run, and a walk to give her 28 base on balls in 2005. Her rate of 0.93 walks per game ranks third in all of Division III and leads the Centennial Conference.
Klingaman struck out two and walked one in seven innings of work, earning her third complete-game victory of the year. The sophomore lowered her ERA to 2.52, good enough to move her into the top ten in the Centennial Conference.
Swarthmore (9-21, 3-7 CC) travels west on Saturday, April 23rd for their final road game of 2005, heading to Lancaster, Pa. for a 1:00 p.m double header versus Franklin & Marshall College.
