Garnet Captures Fourth Centennial Crown

The Garnet (12-5, 10-0) used an 8-1 decision over Gettysburg (4-7, 3-6) to post a perfect 10-0 mark and capture its fourth Centennial Conference Championship and third over the last five seasons.

Swarthmore won its seventh match in a row and its 19th consecutive Centennial contest in posting its fourth perfect conference mark.

The Garnet jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a sweep of the doubles matches. Jenna Adelberg '06 and Waverly Lutz '07 posted an 8-6 victory over Sara Marian Seibert and Ali Moyer in their first ever match at No. 1 while Erica Lukoski '08 and Sara Sargent '07 breezed to an 8-0 decision at No. 2 over Katie Ferraro and Caroline Kunkle. Katie Berry '05, playing in her final home match, teamed with Sonia Vallabh '06 to rally for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Laura Helland and Beth Lucas to complete the sweep.

Sonya Reynolds '07 won her eighth straight singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Seibert at No. 1 and Sargent picked up her second win of the day with a 6-1, 7-5 nod over Moyer at No. 2. Lutz went 2-for-2 on the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ferraro at No. 3 and Lukoski posted a double win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Kunkle at No. 4. Vallabh also earned her second victory of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 pasting of Helland.

Lucas earned the only Bullet victory on the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 decision over Adelberg at No. 6.

This upcoming weekend, the Garnet will host the Centennial Conference Men's and Women's Tournament.

Gettysburg Takes Two From Garnet

Patrick Christmas '08 and Scott Young '06 (above) had five hits apiece, but Swarthmore stranded 17 runners in a Sunday afternoon double header at Gettysburg College, falling to the Bullets 5-4 and 11-1.

The Bullets (17-16, 10-5 CC) got going early, scoring three runs in the first inning of game one. Gettysburg assumed a 4-0 lead with another score off Swarthmore starter Alex Ryan-Bond '07 in the fourth.

Young got the Garnet (5-21, 3-13 CC) on the board in the top of the fifth. The junior left fielder moved up on a passed ball, stole third, and came home when the catcher's throw sailed into the outfield.

Swarthmore tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth when catcher Ben Mendelson '08 cleared the bases with a three-run double off Bullet starter Tobin Whittman.

Gettysburg secured the victory in their final at bat, benefitting from two hits and a Garnet miscue to win 5-4.

Ryan-Bond took the loss for Swarthmore, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on eleven hits while striking out three batters.

Young was a perfect three for three with two runs scored and Christmas contributed two base hits and a run.

A slug-fest ensued in the second game, as the two teams combined for 23 hits off five pitchers. The Bullets were able to plate 11 runs, while the Garnet had no such luck, stranding 12 runners on base.

Christmas led Swarthmore with three hits while Young, Jody Fisher '05, Ian Adelstein '07, and Mendelson had two hits each.

The Garnet conclude their 2005 campaign on Saturday, April 30th when they host long-time rival Haverford College in a 12:30 p.m. Centennial double header.

Garnet Slay Knights in Season Finale

Ele Forbes '05 saved the best for last as she recorded a career-high five goals in her final collegiate game to lead the Garnet (8-8) to a 16-8 victory at Neumann.

The Garnet jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Megan Speare '05, Forbes and Niamh Shortt '06 each scored goals just 4:10 apart. The Knights answered, as they scored the next three goals to tie the game with 16:43 remaining in the first half. Samantha Lafferty scored twice and added an assist on Kolleen Kitzinger's goal.

Forbes scored her second on a Heidi Fieselmann '06 assists at 14:49 to regain the lead but Michelle Roberts tied the match at 4-4 2:30 later.

From there it was all Swat, as the Garnet used a 5-0 run to open a 9-4 halftime advantage. Lindsay Roth '07 scored the first of four goals at 10:10 on a Forbes assist and then the Garnet struck quick with three goals in 57 seconds. Megan Sanborn '08 opened the floodgates as she converted a Fieselmann helper with 4:52 remaining. Fieselmann picked up her first of three at 4:11 on a Shortt pass and Forbes recorded the hat trick just 12 seconds later off a Fieselmann dish to make it 8-4. Forbes added her fourth of the game with 35 second left off a Katie Crawford '07 assist.

The Garnet kept the pressure on as Crawford made it six in a row with a goal just 25 seconds into the half. Fieselmann collected her second goal of the game at 24:31 and Roth picked up her second goal with 20:24 remaining to give the Garnet eight straight and a 12-4 lead.

Neumann stopped the bleeding with three goals in a span of 1:24 to close to within 12-7 with 16:24 remaining. Kitzinger added two goals for the hat trick and Lafferty picked up her third of the game to cut into the Garnet lead.

Roth collected her third goal of the game and her fifth hat trick of the season at 12:40 and added her fourth goal just 1:55 later to make it a 14-7 game.

Forbes tallied her career-high fifth goal with 5:51 remaining off a Shortt pass to give the Garnet a 15-7 lead. Lafferty then added her fourth of the game with 3:54 left.

Fieselmann closed out the scoring with her third goal of the game, and third hat trick of the season at the 2:21 mark. The junior also added three assists for a season-best six points.

Forbes closes her career with 53 goals and 14 assists for 67 points.

Garnet Clinches Conference Title

Swarthmore won their sixth consecutive match to clinch a share of the 2005 Centennial Conference title, downing Dickinson 8-1 in Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet (11-5, 9-0 CC) have won 18 consecutive Conference matches and can secure sole possession of their second Centennial in three years with a win over Gettysburg on Sunday afternoon.

Sonya Reynolds '07, the seventh-ranked singles' player in the Atlantic South Region, defeated Erica Tobias 6-0, 6-4 at No.1 and teamed up with Waverly Lutz '07 to beat Tobias and Julie Chafant 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Reynolds (above) has beaten seven straight opponents in singles' play, winning fourteen consecutive sets in the process.

The Red Devils (7-7, 4-5 CC) secured their lone point in No. 2 doubles action, as Amanda Kaplan and Emily Ruben downed Elli Suzuki '06 and Emily Townsend '07 by a score of 8-5. The Garnet won the other doubles' match, as Oriana Galardi-Este '06 and Sonali Shahi '06 defeated Satomi Nakane and Katherine Paul 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

Suzuki dropped her first set at No.2 doubles yet rallied to defeat Chafant 2-6, 6-4, 10-5. Townsend re-grouped in singles' play as well, winning 7-6 (1), 6-4 at No. 3 over Kaplan.

Lutz, a double-winner , and Erica Lukoski '08 easily won at No.4 and No. 5 singles', respectively. Lutz defeated Ruben 6-2, 6-2 and Lukoski downed Melissa Nolan 6-2, 6-3. Jamie Midyette '08 completed the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jamie Wolf in No. 6 singles' action.

Ash Posts Career Best in 5K at Widener

Garrett Ash '05 placed  third overall and second among Division III runners in a personal best time of 15:05.85 in the 5,000 meter run at the Widener Invitational. Ash's time is the seventh fastest time in Swarthmore history.

Ross Weller '08 recorded a personal best time of 9:56.98 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to finish in sixth place overall and third in Divsion III. Weller's time is sixth fastest on the Garnet steeplechase list.

Vernon Chaplin '07 finished in 15th place overall in the 800 in a time of 1:55.28, good for third among Division III runners while Keefe Keeley '06 posted a personal best time of 1:57.30 to place 23rd overall and sixth in DIII.

James Golden '05 recorded a personal best in the 1,500 posting a time of 4:01.57 to place 10th on the Swarthmore list. Results

#16 F&M Spoil Senior Day

Nationally-ranked Franklin & Marshall College ran off seven straight goals in the first half on their way to an 11-6 victory over Swarthmore at Clothier Field on a stormy Saturday afternoon.

The Diplomats' Kevin Kohl netted the first goal at the 14:17 mark and Garnet midfielder Ryan McKenna '07 (above) tied the score at 1-1, finishing off a pass from Tom Coughlin '05 with 10:32 to go in the first period.

F&M put home the next seven scores to assume an 8-1 lead following Bobby Atkins' goal at the 11:19 mark in period number two. Coughlin put an end to the run, scoring an extra-man goal with 4:18 remaining and fellow senior Jeff Donlea put in his 20th goal of the season a minute later. The Diplomats added a score 55 seconds before the intermission, taking an 9-3 lead into halftime.

Swarthmore scored the first two goals of the third period, one by Coughlin at 11:06 and another by McKenna in a man-up situation at 9:40.

The contest was halted for 25 minutes with 6:51 left in the the third as a passing thunderstorm dumped torrents of rain onto Clothier Field.

Play continued without further delay, yet the feverish goal-scoring pace came to a halt. Each team added a goal for the final margin.

The final Swarthmore goal, an unassisted score by senior tri-captain Tim Chryssikos, was the 25th of the year by the Maryland native.

Coughlin, another senior playing in his final game at Clothier Field, led Swarthmore (6-6, 2-4 CC) with four points on two goals and two assists. McKenna chipped in two goals and Chryssikos added a goal and an assist. Frank Mazzucco '08 made eight saves in goal for the Garnet.

Swarthmore travels to 8th-ranked Washington College on Wednesday, April 27th for their next contest. The Garnet will match up with the 2004 national-finalist Shoremen in a 4:00 p.m. contest.

Farrelly Posts Personal Best at Widener

Debbie Farrelly '06 posted a personal best in the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:57.06 to place 11th overall and third among Division III runners at the Widener Invite.

Kavita Hardy '08 ran the 800 in 2:22.51 to place 13th overall and 5th in Division III and Jessica Zagory '05 cleared 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump to place 11th overall and sixth in D3.

Lauren Fety '06 covered the 5K in 19:04.31 to place 14th overall and 10th in Division III and Jen Stevenson '06 leaped 14 feet four inches in the long jump to place 18th overall and 11th in Division III.

Emily Conlon '06 posted a personal best in the javelin with a toss of 85 feet 7 inches.

McDaniel Terrorizes Garnet

Lindsay Ricks and Kristen Ramey each scored three goals to lead McDaniel to an 18-6 Centennial Conference victory over the Garnet on Senior Day at Clothier Field.

Ele Forbes '05 scored two goals and Megan Speare '05 added a goal in the final home game of their careers.

McDaniel scored the first eight goals of the game and never looked back, taking a 9-1 lead into the half. Tara Smith added two goals and an assist and Michelle Mullen scored twice for the Green Terror. McDaniel held a 38-31 advantage in shots as Susannah Blair '08 recorded 17 saves in goal for the Garnet.

Heidi Fielselmann '06, Megan Sanborn '08 and Lindsay Roth '07 each scored goals for the Garnet.

Swarthmore returns to action tomorrow with a short trip to Neumann for the season finale at 2:30.

F&M Rallies Past Garnet

Centennial Conference-leading Franklin & Marshall College (18-13, 11-3 CC) completed a season sweep of Swarthmore on Friday afternoon, downing the Garnet 5-3 at rainy Clothier Fields.

Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as catcher Ben Mendelson '08 came home on a two-out single off the bat of left fielder Matt Fisher '08. The freshman outfielder battled to a 3-2 count with Diplomat starter Jeff Rowand, before lining the ball to center for his first career RBI.

The Diplomats scratched out two runs in the top of the fourth off Garnet starter Jared Leiderman '05, putting together a pair of hits for a 2-1 lead.

F&M got two more runs in the sixth and one in the eight, capitalizing on four Swarthmore miscues to assume a 5-1 lead.

The Garnet benefitted from a Diplomat error to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the lead to 5-3. Rowand got Mendelson to pop out to kill the rally.

Diplomat closer Dan Tischler came on and pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the year.

Pat Christmas '08 scored a run for Swarthmore (5-19, 3-11 CC) and nailed his sixth double of the season. Scott Young '06 added a run and a single, while Jody Fisher '05 drew two walks.

Leiderman (above) went the distance, allowing one earned run on only three hits over nine innings of work. The senior right-hander struck out nine batters to add to his Conference-leading total of 76 strikeouts. The nine K's increase his career total to 217, the fourth-most in Centennial Conference history. Steve Farneth '00 holds the Garnet school record with 229 career strikeouts.

The Garnet travel to Gettysburg on Saturday, April 23rd for their next game, a 12:30 p.m. double header against the Bullets.

Swat Rallies Past Diplomats

Sara Sargent '07 rallied from a set down and an injury to pull out a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and lead the Garnet (10-5, 8-0) to a come from behind, 5-4 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over visiting Franklin & Marshall (10-3, 6-2) at Faulkner Courts. Swarthmore extends its CC win streak to 17 in a row.

The Dips jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. Barbara Bee and Katie Gaskins teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Sonya Reynolds '07 and Marissa Matthews '07 at No. 1 and Lizzy Denenberg and Jenna Ishkanian posted an 8-3 win over Emily Townsend '07 & Waverly Lutz '07 at No. 2. Marie Papalia and Beth Conner recorded an 8-6 win over Jenna Adelberg '06 and Sargent at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

The Garnet turned it around with strong singles play as Reynolds defeated Gaskins, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Elli Suzuki '06 blanked Papalia, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Townsend posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Conner at No. 4 to tie up the match at 3-3.

Sonia Vallabh '06 defeated Christina Henkel 6-3, 6-4 to give the Garnet a 4-3 lead with two matches to play. Denenberg then defeated Lukoski 7-6 (3), 7-5 at No. 5 to tie the match, setting the stage for Sargent to come to the rescue much like the Muhlenberg match.

The Garnet travel to Dickinson on Saturday for a 1 p.m. CC match. Results
