Garnet Drop Season Finale to Fords

May 2nd, 2005

Haverford (22-14, 11-5 CC) got two outstanding pitching performances on Monday afternoon to sweep both ends of a double header from Swarthmore at Clothier Fields.

The Fords won the first game 5-1, benefiting from eight Garnet errors to defeat senior Jared Leiderman in his final appearance in a Swarthmore uniform.

Haverford senior Nick Chanock out-dueled Leiderman, limiting the Garnet to three hits while striking out eight batters for his fifth win of the season.

Leiderman (above) allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits while fanning eight batters over seven innings of work. The right-hander finishes the season with 84 strikeouts, tops in the Centennial, capping his career total at 225, the fifth-most in Conference history and second-best in school history.

Sam Faeder '07 had a hit and score a run, while teammates Pat Christmas '08 and Scott Dalane '08 added one single apiece.

Another pitching duel ensued in the second game as Swarthmore's Alex Ryan-Bond and Haverford's Steve Zyman locked horns.

Ryan-Bond blinked first as the Fords put a run up when second baseman Brandon Mills drove home Dan Render with a two out single in the third inning.

The score remained 1-0 Haverford as Ryan-Bond limited the Fords to a pair of hits in the next three frames. On the other side, Zyman cruised along allowing only one Garnet base runner, leadoff hitter Scott Young '06, to reach third base.

The Fords got to Ryan-Bond in the top of the seventh when Render hit a two-run triple to left and scored to make it 4-0 when the relay throw got away from Swarthmore.

Zyman did not allow a hit in the final two frames, claiming his first win of the season. The senior threw all nine innings, giving up six hits while striking out ten batters. Ryan-Bond suffered the loss, giving up seven hits over eight innings and striking out two Fords.

Young had two hits for Swarthmore (5-23, 3-15 CC) and Faeder contributed his third double of the season in the season finale for the Garnet.
