Generals Down Garnet in NCAA Play
Swarthmore's third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament was short-lived as the Garnet (12-6) met up against a buzz saw in Washington & Lee and fell 9-0 to the host Generals in Lexington, VA.
The unbeaten Generals (19-0) entered the match ranked third in Division III and the top seed in the Atlantic South Region Tournament while the 25th-ranked Garnet owned the No. 7 ranking in the region.
The Generals jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles as the top ranked team in the region, Lindsay Hagerman and Ginny Wortham knocked off No. 5 Sonya Reynolds '07 and Marissa Matthews '07 8-1 at first doubles. W&L's No. 2 doubles team of Emily Applegate and Kristen McClung, ranked fourth in the region, defeated Sara Sargent and Elli Suzuki, 8-2 and Lora Farris and Leah Weston, ranked No. 13, defeated Waverly Lutz '07 and Emily Townsend '07, 8-5 at No. 3.
Washington & Lee completed the sweep with straight set victories in all six singles matches. The Generals singles lineup features four players in the top 13 of the latest ITA Regional Rankings. Reynolds, ranked No. 7 in the region, fell to top-ranked Hagerman, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 and Suzuki, ranked 20th, fell to No. 13 McClung, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Matthews, fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 to third-ranked Applegate and Sargent battled with 12th-ranked Wortham, at No. 4, before falling 6-3, 6-2. Townsend fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 to Weston and Katie Kingsbury defeated Lutz at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2 to complete the sweep. Results
