McDaniel Terrorizes Garnet Season Finale
McDaniel College (20-15, 13-3 CC), the defending Centennial Conference champion, rapped out 26 hits in two games to sweep a Monday afternoon double header from Swarthmore by scores of 9-1 and 14-2.
The Green Terror had the offense clicking from the first pitch, scoring five runs in the first inning and three more times in the second of game one. Mary Abrams kept the Garnet off the base paths, allowing only three hits while striking out three.
Seniors Sam Brody had a hit and scored once and Valerie Marone '05 and Kelly Siano '07 contributed hits as well.
Swarthmore evened game two 1-1 when Danielle Miller '06 walked and eventually scored on freshman Katie Gold's ground out.
The Terror quickly re-gained control of the game, scoring in each inning, including a seven-fifth to crack the game wide open.
Swarthmore (10-26, 4-12 CC) tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth when Miller drove in Melissa LaVan '07 with a one-out RBI double.
Catcher Christina Procacci '06 drew two more walks, giving her an amazing 35 free passes on the year, placing her 10th in Division III softball history. The junior's .518 on-base percentage and 35 walks is tops in the Centennial Conference for both categories.
Miller had a hit, a walk, scored once, and drove in a run and Mary Mintel '05 added a base hit in her final appearance in a Swarthmore uniform. Mintel closed out her career with a banner season in 2005, leading the team in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases, and slugging percentage.
