Baseball: Terror Trip Up Garnet

April 9th, 2006

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

WESTMINSTER, Md. -Swarthmore senior outfielder Scott Young had three hits, two runs, and three RBIs as Swarthmore lost both ends of a Sunday doubleheader at Centennial rival McDaniel.  The Green Terror took game one 7-1 behind a one-hitter from McDaniel pitcher Jimmy Dahlgren and then broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the eighth on their way to an 8-4 victory in the second game.  Swarthmore dips to 5-14 overall and 0-8 in the Centennial while McDaniel improves to 8-13 overall and 2-5 in the CC.

The doubleheader was a make-up for the rained out April 8th twinbill.

The first game belonged to Terror senior right-hander Dahlgren. With McDaniel up 1-0 in the third, Garnet junior Sam Faeder reached on a error by the Green Terror first baseman and stole second base. Faeder scored on Young's single to right-center, tying the game 1-1. Dahlgren erased any more Garnet chances by retiring Garnet sophomore Patrick Christmas on strikes for the third out of the inning.

McDaniel scored once in the bottom of the third and five more times in the fifth while Dahlgren (3-2) retired the final 13 Swarthmore batters to earn his third win of the season.

Garnet junior Alex Ryan-Bond (1-5) was charged with the loss, tossing 6.0 innings with four strikeouts.

Swarthmore scored the first run of game two as Young drew a one-out walk and and came home on junior Ian Adelstein's RBI single.

The Green Terror answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, and then extended their lead to 4-1 with another score in the second.

Swarthmore cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third when Young reached base with a single to right field. Young, who finished the day with a team-high on-base percentage, moved over to third with a pair of stolen bases. Young leads the team with 13 swipes in 2006, and has only been caught twice looking to advance. Catcher Andy Bender '08 drove in Young with a two-out single to left. Bender, a Maryland native, has hit well (.409, 9 for 22) with runners in scoring position, good for second on the team.

The Garnet fought back to tie the game 4-4 with two runs off three hits in the fourth. Junior Noah Cooper-Harris led off with a double to right and then got caught off second base on sophomore Scott Dalane's chopper to the mound. After another out, Faeder drove in Dalane with a base hit to left center and then came into score on Young's second hit of the game.

McDaniel busted the game open in the eighth, plating four runs on four hits to give reliever Jimmy Isaminger (2.0 IP, K) his first career victory.

Garnet sophomore Sean Varsolona (2-4) took the loss, pitching 7.1 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) while striking out three.

Young was 2-for-4 in the second game with two runs and an RBI while Faeder also collected two hits, scored, and drove in one. Adelstein was 2-for-5 for the Garnet with an RBI.

Swarthmore returns home to Clothier Field on Tuesday, April 11 to face Centennial foe Washington at 3:30 p.m.

McDaniel jumped out in front as Steve Hoffman scored the first of four goals on the day off a Cory Nellissen assist at 11:18 of the first. Jeff Donlea '05 tied the game on a Ryan McKenna '07 feed at 7:00. The Green Terror countered quickly as Kolyn Kirby scored his team-leading 24th goal of the season just 37 seconds later. Tom Coughlin '05 tied the game at 2-2 with 5:26 remaining and Jay Charles '07 ripped a shot past Terror keeper Chad Schell just before the horn sounded ending the first quarter to give the Tide a 3-2 lead.

Kirby added his second goal of the game at 13:04 to tie the game at 3-3 and a Matthew Buschman goal at 7:40 reclaimed the lead for the Terror. The Garnet continued to put pressure on Schell as the offense held a 14-5 shot advantage in the quarter but managed to score only one goal when Gavin Nurick '07 tickled the twine with 3:10 remaining to send the squads into the break deadlocked at 4-4.

The Garnet grabbed the lead again when McKenna scored off a Coughlin feed at 12:48. Hoffman struck again when he won the draw and scored just 11 seconds later to even the game at 5-5 and Baer made it 6-5 when he scored unassisted at 11:22. Coughlin received a Chryssikos pass on the crease just left of Schell and deposited the ball behind his back into the upper left corner for one of the prettiest goals of the season (pictured above).

From there, the Garnet had several chances to take a lead but Schell was equal to the test making a big save with less than a minute to go. For the game he recorded 23 saves and the Garnet held a 57-19 shot advantage. Frank Mazzucco '08 recorded five saves in goal for the Garnet.
