Men’s Track & Field: Weller, Shoop Roll in Steeple at Osprey Open

POMONA, Nj. -- Sophomore Ross Weller and Jon Shoop went 1-2 in the steeplechase while three other Swarthmore runners ran in the top-10 at the Osprey Open hosted by Richard Stockton College on a wet Saturday.

Weller crossed the line first, completing the 3,000 meter course in a time of 10:03.65, the eighth-fastest time in school history. Shoop cruised in second out of 15 runners, running a time of 10:15.30 - the 11th-fastest in the record books.

Junior Vernon Chaplin finished second by two steps at 1,500 meters, posting a time of 4:10.14. Classmate Dillon McGrew ran 14th out of 30 runners in the same event, clocking in at 4:30.82.

Senior Paul Thibodeau was third in the 800 meter event, circling the track twice in a time of 2:02.37. Teammate Adam Hunt '06 also finished in the top-10, running eighth with a time of 2:04.91. Russell Wight '07 was close behind in 12th (2:06.91) while Jon Estey '08 finished 17th (2:10.57).

Michael Bonesteel '08 ran in the top-15 in both the 100 meter and 200 meter events. He finished 15th (12.05) out of 27 participants in the 100 and then came in 14th (24.52) out of 30 entrants in the 200.

The Garnet will travel north to Collegeville, Pa. for their next meet. Swarthmore will take part in the Grizzly Invitational hosted by Ursinus College on Friday, April 14. The first event is scheduled for 11::00 a.m.
