Women’s Track and Field: Garnet Cause Stir at Osprey Invite
POMONA, Nj. - Seven members of the Swarthmore track & field squad posted top-10 finishes as the Garnet women excelled at all aspects of the Osprey Open hosted by Richard Stockton on a wet Saturday on the Jersey Shore.
The Garnet women made the biggest noise in a long distance event: freshman Emma Stanley and Bess Ritter took the top two spots out of 24 runners in the 5,000 meter event. Stanley easily out-distanced the field, finishing in a time of 18:53.36 - the 10th fastest time in school history. Ritter was next to cross the line, posting a time of 19:17.84. Senior Molly Maurer also competed, finishing 17th in a time of 21:20.54.
More success came in the middle distance as Swarthmore had three women make the top ten at 800 meters. Senior Emily Wistar was third in a time of 2:25.23, sophomore Kavita Hardy came in sixth in a time of 2:31.83, and freshman Faith Pampel took tenth position with a time of 2:35.98.
Frosh Cait Mullarkey represented Swarthmore in the sprints, continuing the strong placements with a third in the 200 meters (29.10) and seventh in the 100 meters (13.75).
Finally, representing the Garnet in the field events was javelin thrower Emily Conlon '06. In her first event of 2006, Conlon posted a distance of 28.27 meters (92'8"). That throw is the seventh-longest recorded by a Swarthmore track and field participant.
The Garnet travel north to Collegeville, Pa. for their next meet. Swarthmore will take part in the Grizzly Invitational hosted by Ursinus College on Friday, April 14. The first event is scheduled for 11::00 a.m.
