Women’s Lacrosse: Crawford, Garnet Defense Combine For Victory

April 13th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior midfielder Katie Crawford tallied a hat trick and the Garnet defense was solid as Swarthmore earned an 8-6 victory over Muhlenberg Thursday in Centennial Conference action on Clothier Field.

The Garnet (12-3 overall) improved to 4-3 in conference play with two conference games remaining on in 2006. The 12 victories is the most by a Swarthmore team since the 1995 season, when the Garnet went 13-4.

Swarthmore was hot right from the start, with junior midfielder Lindsay Roth putting the Garnet on the scoreboard just 35 seconds into the game.  The offense kept coming as Swarthmore rolled to a 6-0 lead, thanks to goals from Crawford, Athena Samras '07, Heidi Fieselman '06, Roth, and Megan Sanborn '08.  Senior midfielder Niamh Shortt registered an assist on Samaras' goal.

Muhlenberg (8-5, 3-3 CC) responded to the offensive outburst with two quick goals late in the first half, including Courtney Tapkas' milestone 200th career goal.  Crawford scored her second goal of the game with a little over a minute remaining in the half, giving the Garnet a comfortable 7-2 lead at halftime.

Muhlenberg came on strong in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to bring them to within 2. Crawford scored again for Swarthmore at the 51:11 mark to give the Garnet some breathing room, and then narrowly missed scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the game as two of her shots hit the crossbar. Muhlenberg's Sara Hiller scored with 17 seconds left in the game, but that wasn't enough as Swarthmore escaped with an 8-6 victory.

Crawford now has 26 goals on the year, and Roth's two scores also give her 26 on the season.

The Garnet dominated offensively, recording 30 shots, while Muhlenberg could muster only 15 thanks to relentless Garnet pressure on the defensive end.

Freshman defender Melissa Grigsby played lock-down defense on Tapkas, as Muhlenberg's prolific scorer (tied for first in the CC in goals per game entering the game) only registered a pair of goals. Grigsby also forced 3 turnovers and collected 5 groundballs.  Defender Chloe Lewis '06 and Sanborn also picked up 5 groundballs apiece.

Sophomore goaltender Susannah Blair recorded seven saves in net for Swarthmore.

Entering the game, the Garnet were fifth in the Centennial Conference standings, battling for a spot in the conference playoffs.  In their two remaining conference games, Swarthmore will take on Haverford, who is winless in conference play, and Ursinus, who is currently in 4th place.

The Garnet travel to Haverford on Tuesday, April 18 for at 5:00 p.m. Centennial game. Swarthmore downed the Fords 13-5 on March 18 in the second round of the 2006 Seven Sisters Championship.

Men’s Lacrosse: Rangers Track Down Double-OT Win

April 12th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman attack Stelios Wilson tied the game 9-9 with his third goal of the game at 0:44 remaining in regulatione, but Gil Arbitsman scored with 0:54 left in the second overtime period to give the visiting Drew Rangers a 10-9 non-conference victory over Swarthmore.

Drew (4-6) got off to a quick start, scoring a pair of goals in the fifth minute of play to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Will Predun answered for the Garnet (3-6), though, depositing a Matt Perez '06 feed into the back of the net. Swarthmore controlled the ensuing faceoff, and Perez once again made the correct pass, hitting freshman midfielder Todd Friedman, who scored with 8:42 to play in the first quarter to tie the score.

Rangers Dan Moffo and Cory Helly scored late in the first period to give Drew a 4-2 lead.

The teams nearly battled to a draw in the second quarter, as only Wilson's first goal of the game with 6:50 remaining prevented a scoreless period. Garnet midfielder Will Predun '09 picked up the assist.

Moffo grabbed his second goal of the game with three minutes gone by in the third quarter to extend Drew's lead back to two, but the Garnet once again rallied to tie. Junior Gavin Nurick tickled the twine with 8:35 left in the period, and Perez fed Wilson for the equalizer just under five minutes later.

Tom Stitt re-took the lead for the Rangers with his second goal two minutes later, but Swarthmore stormed down the field and Wilson, on the giving end this time, got the ball to Friedman in time for the latter's second goal which, like the first, came only 20 seconds after the previous faceoff.

Swarthmore finally took the lead 22 seconds into the fourth quarter when junior Ryan McKenna fed classmate Jay Charles for a pretty goal. The lead was short-lived, though, as Moffo completed the hat trick just as a penalty was called on Garnet sophomore defender Drew Bonessa and Drew's Gil Arbitsman scored for the visitors on the ensuing power play. Nearly seven minutes passed before Robert Budziszewski extended the Drew lead back to two once again.

One more time, though, Swarthmore had the answer. Charles quickly gained control of the face off, found a small opening, and unleashed a low lefthanded shot that somehow got past Drew goaltender Michael Celantano.

Drew tried to run out the clock, but finally turned the ball over, and Charles found Wilson in traffic on the left wing, where the freshman fired the ball past Celantano to force overtime.

The Rangers controlled play through nearly all of the first overtime, but Garnet netminder Frank Mazzucco '08 made three big saves to preserve the deadlock.

Play went back and forth in the second overtime until the Rangers gained control of the ball, marched downfield, and got the ball to Arbitsman, who shot the game-winner past Mazzucco.

Wilson's hat trick is the first of his career. He now has 11 goals on the season, second on the team to Charles (12 goals).

Charles and Friedman each added a pair of goals, while Perez finished with three assists. Moffo's three goals led the Rangers; Arbitsman and Tom Stitt each notched a pair.

Charles finished with eight ground balls, which would have been the new high point for the Garnet on the season if not for junior defender Anthony Orazio, who scooped up 10. Orazio also caused six Ranger turnovers.

Mazzucco finished with a season-high 13 saves, beating his previous high, recorded at Goucher in another overtime contest, by one.Celentano stopped 15 shots for Drew.

Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference play this Saturday, April 15. One of the conference's four ranked teams, #14 Dickinson, comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Swarthmore came into the afternoon leading the Centennial Conference in batting average (.334), runs (152), hits (223), and doubles (38) yet ran into a pair of solid pitching performances that limited any scoring chances.

The Mules chipped away at a late 3-2 Swarthmore lead in game one, eventually scoring the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth to win 4-3.

The Mules scratched out a run in the fifth and then got three more in the sixth, riding Kestenbaum's two-hit shut-out to a 4-0 victory.

Baseball: Swarthmore Wins Thriller Over Shoremen

April 11th, 2006

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A walk-off single by Garnet catcher Andy Bender '08 capped a late-inning comeback as Swarthmore defeated Centennial rival the Washington Shoremen 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Shoremen (6-18 overall, 1-8 CC) came out strong in the first six innings, scoring two runs in the first, a run in the second, and three runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Washington starter Wes Anderson silenced the Garnet bats for much of the afternoon, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

The Garnet offense woke up in the seventh inning batting around the order to score eight runs to take the 8-6 lead. Outfielder Ian Adelstein '07 led off with a double and scored on a base hit by junior Noah Cooper-Harris. The Garnet added three more runs on singles and infield hits.

The inning almost didn't reach that point. Still trailing 6-4, Garnet third baseman Patrick Christmas '08 stepped up to bat with two runners in scoring position and two outs. On a two-strike count, Christmas foul-tipped a pitch in the dirt that was caught by the Washington catcher. The home-plate umpire originally called the swing an inning-ending strikeout, but upon further consideration, the umpires reversed their ruling and ruled the foul ball had hit the ground first.

Christmas took advantage of the new life, sending the next pitch into center field for a game-tying base hit. Adelstein then came up for a second time in the inning, and launched a two-run home run to left field, the first fence clearing shot hit by a Swarthmore player at Clothier Field.

Cooper-Harris came in from the designated hitter's spot in the fifth to pitch three solid innings in relief, retiring the first eight batters he faced before the Shoremen got two runs to tie the game in the ninth. Freshman Sean Varsolona (3-4) earned the win in relief of Cooper-Harris by finishing the ninth, retiring three of the four men he faced.

Junior first baseman Sam Faeder led off the bottom of the ninth with a bunt single. Outfielder Scott Young '07, who was 3-for-5 on the day and swiped his team-leading 14th stolen base, moved Faeder to second with a base hit. Christmas then flied out and Adelstein reached on a fielder's choice as Faeder was forced out at third. With two outs, and the winning run in scoring position, Bender sent everyone home with a walk-off single to center field, scoring Young.

Bender was the man Swarthmore wanted at the plate, having picked up nine of his 14 RBIs and hit .450 (9for 20) this season with two outs.

For Adelstein, it is the first home run of his collegiate career. The junior already has career-highs this season in runs (15), RBIs (15), doubles (6), walks (12), average (.284), slugging percentage (.418), and on-base percentage (.393).

The Garnet (6-14 overall, 1-8 CC) head to Chestertown, Md. for a re-match against the Shoremen on Friday, April 14 at 3:30 pm.

Women’s Lacrosse: Garnet Spook Owls

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Anna de Regt tied a career-high with five goals to lead Swarthmore to a 16-6 victory over the visiting Bryn Mawr Owls in Centennial action. Junior Lindsay Roth added a hat trick as the two midfielders to claimed a share of the team lead in goals.

Bryn Mawr's Moriah Scott kicked off the scoring with a goal 5:51 into the match, but the Garnet scored four straight goals to take command. Roth notched a pair of goals four minutes apart, the second coming after a pretty pass from midfielder Katie Crawford '07 11:29 in. Senior Heidi Fieselmann quickly converted a third goal to give the Garnet a 3-1 lead.

Eight minutes passed before another goal was scored as both teams were able to force frequent turnovers. Finally, with 9:50 remaining in the half, Fieselmann took a Kelsey Hatzell '09 feed and found the back of the net, extending the Garnet lead to 4-1.

The Owls controlled the ensuing draw and took the ball right down the field, where Scott picked up her second goal of the game.

From there, it was all de Regt until the end of the first half as the freshman completed a hat trick in under eight minutes of play. Crawford picked up her second assist on de Regt's first goal; the latter two tallies came off of free position attempts, with the final goal coming with just eight seconds left in the half.

Interspersed into de Regt's streak were Owl goals by Jen Lam and Greta Flaherty, limiting Swarthmore's halftime lead to 7-4.

The Owls drew first blood in the second period as Flaherty found the back of the net just over two minutes into the period. Bryn Mawr would not score again, though, until 16:46 had passed and the Garnet had scored eight unanswered goals.

Hatzell got things going, converting a free position attempt just one minute after Flaherty's goal. Sophomores Megan Sanborn (2) and Rachel Jordan, junior Athena Samaras, Roth, de Regt, and Hatzell (for the second time) all tickled the twine during the run.

After Zoe Fuller-Young scored the Owls' final goal, de Regt closed out the scoring with her fifth goal with 5:55 to play.

Roth and de Regt now share the team lead in points (30) and goals (24), with six assists each on the season. Crawford is right behind with 23 goals and five dishes.
