#17 Garnet Use Devilish Play to Win on Senior Day

April 25th, 2007

MATCH RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The 17th ranked Garnet (11-5, 9-1 CC) went out with a bang Tuesday afternoon when they downed the Red Devils of Dickinson College (10-9, 5-5 CC) 9-0 on Faulkner Courts. Sara Sargent '07, Waverly Lutz '07, Erica Lukoski '08, and Rachel Wallwork '10 trumped their opponents in both their singles and doubles matches.

It took approximately thirty minutes for the senior tandem of Sargent and Sonya Reynolds to prove their worth and deliver an 8-0 defeat to their opponents. Without breaking a sweat, the seniors smashed volleys, hit baseline winners, and utilized perfected lobs to secure the win.

The No. 2 duo of Lukoski and Marissa Matthews '07 employed the same skilled play to trump their opponents, only offering up four games before running away with victory.

The Devils finally offered the Garnet a threat during the No. 3 doubles match, but Lutz and Wallwork thwarted the attempt. They gladly took the 9-7 win before heading to singles play.

The Garnet women then dominated in singles' action. The Devils came close to taking home a win at No. 4 singles, but Jamie Midyette '08 mustered just enough energy to force her opponent to a tiebreaker. Midyette took the match, and added another tally to her season total to 8-3 overall.

Bearing the No. 2 seed, the Garnet will head to Centennial Conference playoffs, where they will defend their title as two-year reigning champion against Franklin & Marshall in the second semi-final taking place at 3:00 p.m. at Johns Hopkins University.

Garnet Inch Closer to Playoff Berth, Split with the Fords

April 25th, 2007

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa.-- Swarthmore sophomore Christine Sendelsky collected three hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base as Swarthmore (19-11, 9-5 CC) split a doubleheader with rival Haverford Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Fields, winning handily by a score of 10-2 (5 innings) in the first game but coming up short in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap.

The Garnet offense began the first contest on fire, scoring four runs and batting around in the first inning. The first four batters reached base on singles, including an RBI base hit by Sendelsky to rightfield that plated Lauren Walker '09. Later that inning with the bases loaded, senior first baseman Kelly Siano walked to force in Ashley Brandt '07, and Michele Perch '10 singled to knock in freshman pitcher Kathryn Riley. A wild pitch brought home Sendelsky, capping off a four-run opening frame.

Swarthmore's offensive onslaught continued in the second inning, in which five more runs crossed the plate. The hit parade was highlighted by a double by Sendelsky and back-to-back RBI singles to leftfield by Siano and Perch. Siano finished the game one-for-two with a single, walk, two RBIs and a run scored, while Perch was 2-3 with two singles, two RBIs, and a run scored at the plate.

Riley earned her tenth victory of the season, surrendering two runs on four hits with one strikeout. With this win, Riley became only the fourth pitcher in Garnet history to register double-digit victories in a season.

Haverford (17-13, 7-7 CC) mounted a last-ditch offensive effort in the fifth inning, but a fine defensive play by Brandt ended any threat. After one run had crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Dana Irshay '09, junior third baseman Lindsey Sullivan fouled out to rightfielder Brandt. After she reeled in the ball, she fired a bullet to Perch at home to throw out Cassandra Searls '10, who was tagging from third base.

With the game well in hand, the Garnet closed out the Fords in the fifth inning. After Brandt led off the inning with a walk and advanced two bases on a bunt single by Riley, Sendelsky knocked her in on a textbook sacrifice fly to leftfield.

In game two, the Garnet jumped out to a two-run lead in the second inning, following an RBI double by designated player Marianne Klingaman '07 and a single by sophomore Kristin Caspar that plated Klingaman. Klingaman led all Garnet hitters in the second game, going two-for-three with a single, double, run batted in, and run scored.

The Fords retaliated in the top of the third inning, ignited by a leadoff single by senior Amy Havassy, who later scored on a wild pitch, and a double by Searls. A two-out double by Natalie Richman '09 knocked in Searls to tie the game at two.

In the bottom half of the third, the Garnet tacked on two more runs. After a leadoff bunt single by Brandt, who then stole second, Riley singled to center. Both Brandt and Riley would eventually score on a fielding error by the second baseman, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Garnet. These four runs were all that the Garnet bats could muster off of Haverford pitcher Becky Garibotto '09 (9-3), who earned the complete game victory, giving up eight hits and two walks.

The Fords nibbled away at the two-run deficit, scoring a run in the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI double by Sullivan and another in the sixth on an RBI single by Garibotto.

With the game tied a four in the seventh inning, the Fords scored what would turn out to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by Taylor Zavadsky '10, scoring Sullivan who had led off the inning with a double. Despite a one-out single by Sendelsky in the bottom of the seventh, the Garnet bats could not force home the tying run.

Riley (10-2) took the loss for the Garnet in her 1.2 innings of relief duty for starting pitcher Alexandra Zelaski '09.

With the victory in game one, the Garnet matched the number of Centennial Conference wins earned last year (nine) and now sit in a tie for second place with Dickinson (winners of two over F&M Tuesday) in the CC standings. Swarthmore maintains control of its own destiny and can clinch a playoff spot with a victory on Saturday against McDaniel. The Garnet look to replicate last year's performance against the Green Terror, in which they pulled out a crucial victory on the last day of last season to put them into the playoffs. Saturday's final doubleheader at Clothier Fields is Senior Day for the Garnet with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The Garnet hit the links early on Friday morning for the start of the 2007 Centennial Conference Championships at Pilgrim's Oak Golf Course in Peach Bottom, Pa.  The tournament is a three-day affair and Swarthmore aims to top its program-best fourth place finish in 2006.

Bono Has Beautiful Day, Garnet Down Owls

April 24th, 2007

BOX SCORE

BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- Freshman Alex Gilbert-Bono picked up her second career hat trick and sophomore Anna de Regt added three goals of her own as the Garnet closed out 2007 with a 13-7 victory at Bryn Mawr.  Swarthmore completes its season at 11-7, 4-5 in the Centennial.

The Owls (3-13, 0-9 CC) held a 3-2 lead through 15 minutes, but Swarthmore went on a 4-goal run to end the half.  Senior Katie Crawford got the equalizer with 13:34 to play off of a Gilbert-Bono feed and de Regt added two goals in 28 seconds a few minutes later. Freshman Abbe Muller closed out the first-half scoring with 7:20 on the clock, giving the Garnet a 6-3 lead.

Bryn Mawr sophomore Georgia Lawrence tried to keep the Owls close, scoring her second and third goals of the game in the first seven minutes of the second half, but there was just too much Gilbert-Bono.  The freshman followed a Megan Sanborn '08 goal with a score of her own with 26:05 to play to make the score 8-4.  Following a Lawrence goal, sophomore Marissa Schaffer scored off a Muller feed and Gilbert-Bono added two more goals midway through the period to increase the lead to 11-5.

Muller and Schaffer added goals in the 54th minute to ice the game.

Garnet junior goalkeeper Susannah Blair made seven saves while improving her season record to 9-6.  Owls netminder Stephanie Hilton kept the game close with 22 saves.

Swarthmore faced an uphill climb in 2007 due to a tough schedule in the stacked Centennial Conference.  The conference season opened with games against the #1-, #4-, and #15-ranked teams in the country.  After those games, Swarthmore rallied to win 4 of their final 6 Centennial contests but came up just one game short of a playoff spot.

A number of young players emerged for the Garnet during the season.  Schaffer established herself early with four-goals in the team's season-opening win at Moravian and never stopped scoring, finishing with a team-high 38 goals--the highest total by a Swarthmore player since Jackie Kahn '04 netted 54 in 2004.

Freshmen Gilbert-Bono and Muller also played major roles.  Gilbert-Bono's blazing speed led to a number of easy clears and fast-break chances, and her 12 assists were good for third on the team.  Muller provided energy and astounding offensive efficiency off the bench--her 0.594 shot percentage paced the club.

Junior Megan Sanborn continued to do a lot of everything, contributing 22 goals and leading the team in assists (19), draw controls (50), ground balls (47), and caused turnovers (31).

Seniors Roth, Crawford, and Athena Samaras combined for 74 goals and were go-to threats on offense all season long.  After an injury-plagued start, Roth came on strong with 17 goals in the final five games of the year and leaves Swarthmore ranked eighth on the all-time scoring list with 127 goals.

The seniors will be missed, but Swarthmore will return its entire starting defense and plenty of offensive firepower in 2008 and will be well-placed to make a run for the second conference playoff spot in three years.

Bears Trip Up Garnet

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The first-place Ursinus Bears maintained a clear advantage over the rest of the Centennial Conference by sweeping both games of a doubleheader from visiting Swarthmore Sunday afternoon.  Ursinus (24-6 overall, 11-1 CC) won the first game 4-1 and then held of a Garnet comeback to claim game two 4-3.

Swarthmore (18-10 overall, 8-4 CC) sits in second place in the CC standings, one game ahead of Gettysburg, Dickinson and McDaniel.  Four teams make the Centennial playoffs and the Garnet have four more chances to secure a second straight berth with doubleheaders against Haverford (Tuesday, 4:00 p.m.) and McDaniel (Saturday, 1:00 p.m.).  Swarthmore has their work cut out for them—both the Fords and the Green Terror made the CC playoffs in 2006.

The Bears handed the ball to two-time Centennial Pitcher of the Year Mallory Greene (13-1) for game one, and the senior right-hander spread out seven Garnet hits over seven innings while striking out three.

Ursinus used two hits and a Swarthmore error, to take a 2-0 lead after one inning and then added a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to go ahead 4-0.  Swarthmore got on the board in the top of the sixth when freshman Kathryn Riley singled and junior Katherine Gold tripled her home.

Sophomore Alexandra Zelaski (5-4) took the loss for Swarthmore, allowing nine hits and two earned runs in 6.0 innings.  Gold led the Garnet offense by going 2-for-3 with a run drive in

The second game featured a pitching match-up of two rising stars in the Centennial Conference: Riley and Bears' freshman Lauren Davis.  Swarthmore got to Davis first, plating a run in the first inning as senior Ashley Brandt singled, stole second base and scored on sophomore Christine Sendelsky's one-out base hit.

Ursinus got to Riley in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs in the second inning highlighted by catcher Kaitlyn Sutherland's three-run homer.

The Bears added an unearned run in the third after a pair of Garnet errors.

Garnet senior Kelly Siano started a seventh-inning rally for the visitors with a single to left.  Catcher Michele Perch got hit by a pitch and after two outs, sophomore Lauren Walker drove both women home with a base hit.  Brandt walked to put the tying run in scoring position, but Davis beared down and struck out Riley to end the game.

Riley (9-1) allowed only four hits and struck out four batters while suffering her first collegiate loss.  Davis improved to 8-4, limiting Swarthmore to four hits while striking out 10 batters in seven innings.

Swarthmore hosts nemesis Haverford this Tuesday, April 22 in a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader and then concludes the Centennial regular season slate against McDaniel on Saturday.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- With a 6-3 win against the Washington Shoremen on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Swarthmore men's tennis team (5-9) continued to cruise through their remaining matches. Willy Nolan '10, Brian Nalitt '10, Kevin Shaughnessy '09, J.J. England '09, and Jon Reiss '07 won their singles'matches to contribute to the win.

The Shoremen gave the Garnet an early scare with their challenge in doubles play. The No. 2 doubles match between Shaughnessy/Nalitt and Washington's Rafael Roldan and Brian Danver took 17 games and a tiebreaker before the Garnet prevailed 8-7 (5).  Nolan and Marc Greenburg '09 picked up an easy win at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, over Michal Switala and Derek Wise to put Swarthmore up 2-1

Though exhausted from a prolonged doubles match, Shaughnessy was able to take a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory from his opponent, Switala, at No. 5 singles.

The Garnet will battle the 28th ranked Haverford Fords on Tuesday, April 24. A win is crucial as the Garnet continue to seek a bid in the upcoming NCAA Division III Tennis Championships. The match commences at 4:00 p.m.

The heart of the Swarthmore batting order generated three runs in the third inning of game one.  Siano doubled in two of the runs and Michele Perch '10 plated Siano to put the visitors out in front.

The Diplomats (7-23, 1-11 CC) tied the game at 4-4 with three hits and three runs in the sixth inning, but Swarthmore emerged victorious as the bottom of the line-up scratched out a run in the eighth.   Perch laced a one-out single, moved up a wild pitch and came around to score the winning run on sophomore Kristin Caspar's two-out single.

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet sophomore Conor Casey had seven hits and scored two runs while junior catcher Andy Bender added five hits and three RBIs as hometown Swarthmore dropped a pair of Centennial Conference games to Gettysburg at sunny Clothier Fields Saturday afternoon.  The Bullets rallied to win game one, 10-5, and held off a late Swarthmore charge to claim the second game by the score of 10-7.

Swarthmore (4-22 overall, 2-14 CC) held a late 4-2 lead in game one (a scheduled seven-inning affair), but eight miscues in the field proved to be their undoing.

Gettysburg scored three runs in the top of the seventh, fueled by a pair of Swarthmore errors, to take a 5-4 lead.  Swarthmore refused to roll over in their final at-bat.  Freshman Jimmy Gill smoked his first career triple into right field and scored on sophomore Grant Yoshitsu's single to center to tie the game at 5-all

The Bullets (21-6 overall, 10-4 CC) benefited from extra outs in the top of the ninth, scoring five unearned runs to bust the game open.  Once again, resilient Swarthmore looked to even the score, loading the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Gettysburg reliever Packer Larson (1-1) got the final two outs to pick up the victory.

Garnet junior starting pitcher Justin Chen tossed 6.2 innings, allowing only three hits and no earned runs.  Reliever Scott Dalane (1-1) suffered the loss after 2.0 innings of work.

Casey went 3-for-5 with two runs in game one while Bender and Gill chipped in two hits apiece.  Senior Noah Cooper-Harris accounted for two RBIs, coming on a fourth-inning double.

The Bullets scored early and often in the second game, racing out to an 8-1 lead after three innings.  Swarthmore fought back for two runs in the fifth as Wiley Archibald '10, Sammy Faeder '07 and Dalane loaded the bases with three straight hits.  Gill and Yoshitsu both picked up RBIs with ground outs.
