#17 Garnet Use Devilish Play to Win on Senior Day
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The 17th ranked Garnet (11-5, 9-1 CC) went out with a bang Tuesday afternoon when they downed the Red Devils of Dickinson College (10-9, 5-5 CC) 9-0 on Faulkner Courts. Sara Sargent '07, Waverly Lutz '07, Erica Lukoski '08, and Rachel Wallwork '10 trumped their opponents in both their singles and doubles matches.
It took approximately thirty minutes for the senior tandem of Sargent and Sonya Reynolds to prove their worth and deliver an 8-0 defeat to their opponents. Without breaking a sweat, the seniors smashed volleys, hit baseline winners, and utilized perfected lobs to secure the win.
The No. 2 duo of Lukoski and Marissa Matthews '07 employed the same skilled play to trump their opponents, only offering up four games before running away with victory.
The Devils finally offered the Garnet a threat during the No. 3 doubles match, but Lutz and Wallwork thwarted the attempt. They gladly took the 9-7 win before heading to singles play.
The Garnet women then dominated in singles' action. The Devils came close to taking home a win at No. 4 singles, but Jamie Midyette '08 mustered just enough energy to force her opponent to a tiebreaker. Midyette took the match, and added another tally to her season total to 8-3 overall.
Bearing the No. 2 seed, the Garnet will head to Centennial Conference playoffs, where they will defend their title as two-year reigning champion against Franklin & Marshall in the second semi-final taking place at 3:00 p.m. at Johns Hopkins University.
