Shoop, Shoop, Shoop-A-Loop
CHESTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior Jonathan Shoop won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the annual Widener Invitational hosted by Widener University Friday and Saturday.
Shoop bested 12 runners in the steeplechase, posting a Swarthmore top-ten time of 9:50.03, out-running his nearest competitor by almost 13 seconds.
Sophomore Connor Darby also found his way into the top-ten, running a time of 1:56.62 in the 800 to finish 11th out of over 70 runners. Two other Garnet men, Dillon McGrew '07 (1:59.49) and Vernon Chaplin '07 (1:59.84) made the top-20 in the same event.
On Friday night, three Swarthmore runners set personal-best times in the 5,000 in the first night of competition. Nat Erb-Satullo '07 won his heat(15:45.09) and David Riccardi '10 (16:52.12) ran the fastest time of his collegiate career in the same event while Faith Pampel '09 (19:40.63) also dropped a collegiate-best in the women's 5,000.
Freshman Matt Turner had two strong days of jumping for Swarthmore, earning fifth place in the triple jump on Friday (12.88 meters) before taking third place on Saturday in the long jump (6.62 meters) out of 34 entrants.
Swarthmore may have entrants at this weekend's Penn Relays before heading to the Lions' Invitational at the College of New Jersey on Saturday, April 28.
