Swarthmore Tops Shoremen
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- With a 6-3 win against the Washington Shoremen on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Swarthmore men's tennis team (5-9) continued to cruise through their remaining matches. Willy Nolan '10, Brian Nalitt '10, Kevin Shaughnessy '09, J.J. England '09, and Jon Reiss '07 won their singles'matches to contribute to the win.
The Shoremen gave the Garnet an early scare with their challenge in doubles play. The No. 2 doubles match between Shaughnessy/Nalitt and Washington's Rafael Roldan and Brian Danver took 17 games and a tiebreaker before the Garnet prevailed 8-7 (5). Nolan and Marc Greenburg '09 picked up an easy win at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, over Michal Switala and Derek Wise to put Swarthmore up 2-1
Though exhausted from a prolonged doubles match, Shaughnessy was able to take a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory from his opponent, Switala, at No. 5 singles.
At the No.6 spot, England refused to give up a game to Washington's Timothy Parks, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Nalitt sealed the Garnet victory with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Todd Green at No. 3 while Nolan ran his consecutive-win streak to seven matches with a 6-1, 7-5 over Danver at No. 4.
At No.1 singles, Reiss battled past Arturo Solis, whose win at No.1 singles last year helped Washington defeat Swarthmore during the regular season. Reiss proved to be too much on this day, besting Solis 6-1, 6-1.
The Garnet will battle the 28th ranked Haverford Fords on Tuesday, April 24. A win is crucial as the Garnet continue to seek a bid in the upcoming NCAA Division III Tennis Championships. The match commences at 4:00 p.m.
