Garnet Softball Double Dips
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshmen Michele Perch had four hits and Kathryn Riley tossed a one-hitter to lead the Garnet to a sweep of a Centennial softball doubleheader from Franklin & Marshall Saturday afternoon at Baker Campus. Swarthmore won 5-4 in extra innings in game one and cruised to a 9-1 win in the second game.
The heart of the Swarthmore batting order generated three runs in the third inning of game one. Siano doubled in two of the runs and Michele Perch '10 plated Siano to put the visitors out in front.
The Diplomats (7-23, 1-11 CC) tied the game at 4-4 with three hits and three runs in the sixth inning, but Swarthmore emerged victorious as the bottom of the line-up scratched out a run in the eighth. Perch laced a one-out single, moved up a wild pitch and came around to score the winning run on sophomore Kristin Caspar's two-out single.
Swarthmore right-hander Alexander Zelaski (6-3) tossed all eight frames for the win, striking out three batters while allowing only two earned runs.
The Garnet (18-8, 8-2 CC) gave the ball to freshman Kathryn Riley in the second game, and the right-hander allowed only a lead-off double on her way to a five-inning one-hitter to improve to a perfect 9-0 on the season.
The Swarthmore offense generated plenty of run support for Riley, scoring four times in the first and five more times in the third to claim their eight win in the last nine games.
The Garnet continue their quest for a second straight Centennial playoff berth on Sunday, traveling to Ursinus College on Sunday, April 22nd, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
