#17 Garnet Clinch Second Seed, Thwart Green Terror
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Swarthmore women's tennis team played for the third straight day, clinching the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Championships by downing McDaniel 9-0 Sunday afternoon. The Garnet improve to 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the Conference while the Green Terror fall to 0-10 overall and 0-10 in the Centennial.
Swarthmore had little trouble dispatching McDaniel, sweeping the doubles' action and only losing six games during singles' play.
Erica Lukoski '08 and Waverly Lutz '07 rolled past Emily Taylor and Whitney Hines at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-0. Jamie Midyette '08 and Rebecca Committo '10 teamed-up to win 8-3 at No.2 over Kate McLean and Kelly Rampmeyer while Kearney Bangs '10 and Marissa Lee '09 won their second doubles match, defeating Georgena Kafes and Jamie Latham 8-2 at No. 3.
Lutz needed little time to pick up her first win at No. 1 singles in 2006-07, rolling past McLean 6-1, 6-0.while Lukoski won her fourth straight match, defeating Taylor 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Midyette won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 over Hines to improve to 7-3 on the season and Committo eased past Becky Parks 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Lee rolled past Latham 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Bangs moved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kafes at No. 6.
The Garnet conclude the 2007 regular season versus Dickinson this Tuesday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m. Swarthmore will travel to Baltimore, Md. this coming weekend, looking to defend their Centennial Conference title in a four-team tournament hosted by top-seed Johns Hopkins. The Garnet will face either F&M or Washington in the first round—more information will become available later in the week.
