The Academic All-Area Men's Lacrosse Team was voted by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia-metropolitan area, and consists of ten men's lacrosse student-athletes.

Mazzucco volunteers for the Positive Alternatives program in Chester (Pa.) and is a member of the Swarthmore Christian Fellowship. He was also named to the Centennial Academic Honor Roll for the second time.

Mazzucco is the second Garnet athlete to receive a Performer of the Year in his respective sport—Swarthmore men's soccer goalkeeper Reuben Heyman-Kantor '06 was honored in the fall of 2005.

Swarthmore finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 5-7, going 2-6 in the Centennial.

Riley Named All-Region

May 18th, 2007

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College freshman Kathryn Riley has been named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region team. Riley is a utility player selection on the second team in the East Region, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on May 7.  Click here to see a complete listing of the All-Region teams.

Riley, who saw action at first base and third base, put up strong numbers at the plate, leading the team in seven offensive categories--batting average (.363), hits (37), doubles (8), home runs (3), total bases (54),walks (12) and on-base percentage (.458).

Riley recently became the fifth Swarthmore first-year to make First-Team All-Centennial, earning a spot on the team as a pitcher.  She posted a record of 11-4 in 2007 with a 1.15 ERA in 97.0 innings, tallying three shut-outs while striking out 74 batters.  Riley was named Centennial Pitcher of the Week for April 9-15 after pitching her second shut-out of the season in a 4-0 Swarthmore win over Muhlenberg on April 10, striking out nine batters with no walks.  She then allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out four in a 9-6 win at Gettysburg on April 14.

Riley is just the second Swarthmore player to make All-Region; infielder Christine Sendelsky '09 was a second-team at-large selection in 2006.

Riley is the lone Centennial Conference player listed as high as second-team All-Region--Alex Speace from Dickinson (the 2007 Centennial Player of the Year) and Diana Rosemier were at-large selections on the third team.

Swarthmore (22-13 overall, 11-5 Centennial) had one of the best seasons in school history in 2007, breaking the school record for conference wins while earning its second consecutive Centennial playoff berth (also a program-first).

MEET RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet junior Ross Weller continued to lower his 3,000-meter steeplechase time while sophomore Cait Mullarkey just missed a NCAA provisional mark in the 800-meter race at the 2007 Last Chance Meet hosted by Swarthmore College at Clothier Stadium Monday evening.

Weller cruised around his home track, taking second place with a personal-best time of 9:32.60 (fifth-fastest time in school history).

Caitlin Mullarkey '09 just missed the NCAA provisional time in the 800 meters.

Mullarkey found herself in fast heat of the 800 and kept up with the blistering pace, running her fastest 400 split of the season. The sophomore posted the seventh-fastest time out of 16 entrants (the field included three Division-I runners and 2007 Centennial champ Annick Lamar, who posted a new Conference record at 2:10.05), rolling home in 2:15.16. That time is fourth-fastest in school history, a personal-best for Mullarkey and just shy of the NCAA provisional qualifier (2:14.70).

Senior Vernon Chaplin made his final race at Clothier Stadium a memorable one, clocking in with the fastest 1,500-meter time (4:00.39) in six years. His time is a personal-best, ranks seventh-best all-time at Swarthmore and was good for 22nd place out of 50 competitors.

The women's 1,500-meter race also produced two personal-best times; sophomores Kathy Feeney (5:03.62) and Faith Pampel (5:05.14) both ran strong to cap the 2007 season. Freshman Lauren DeLuca also clocked in with her fastest time ever in the 800, finishing 14th with a time of 2:26.34.

The Last Chance Meet concludes the 2007 season for many of the Garnet runners--a couple of harriers may travel to Edison, N.J. to the TCNJ Invitational for a final chance at qualifying for the National Championships.

Bears Eliminate Swarthmore from CC Championships

May 6th, 2007

BOX SCORE

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Ursinus Bears ousted Swarthmore from the Centennial Conference championships for the second straight season, prevailing over the Garnet 1-0 in a classic pitchers' duel Sunday morning at E. Frost Snell Field.

The game's starting pitchers, freshmen Lauren Davis from Ursinus and Kathryn Riley from Swarthmore, gave the Centennial Conference a chilling preview of what is to come over the next three seasons.  The pair, both named All-Centennial in their first season, combined to allow on three hits on Sunday morning while striking out 15 batters.  Davis (11-5) came out the winner on this day, fanning 10 batters while limiting the Garnet to a base hit (single by junior Katherine Gold) and a walk in seven innings.  Riley (11-4) was just as dominant, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

The Bears (30-9) scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With one out, speedy left fielder Erin McHugh reached on a bunt single, stole second, and came around to score on a Mary Reid base hit to center.  Reid was tagged out on the play by Swarthmore first baseman Kelly Siano '07, ending the rally, but the damage was done.

The Garnet (22-13) await word of a possible ECAC Tournament bid; the field is expected to be announced on Monday afternoon.   The 2007 ECAC Tournament is set to take place this coming weekend, May 12-13.

DICKINSON BOX

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior shortstop Katherine Gold had a home run and a triple as the Garnet defeated Dickinson 6-2 to stave off elimination on the first day of competition at the 2007 Centennial Conference Softball Championships hosted by Ursinus College Saturday.

Swarthmore (22-12 overall), seeded No. 2, fell to the third-seed Gettysburg 5-1 in the first game.  The Bullets (23-13) used lead-off two-baggers to collect an early 2-0 lead in the third innig.  The Garnet picked up a run bottom of the inning when two-time All-Centennial second baseman Christine Sendelsky '09 singled up the middle with two outs, fellow All-Centennial performer Gold followed with a base hit and Sendelsky came around to score when senior Kelly Siano reached on an error by the shortstop.

Gettysburg chased Swarthmore starting pitcher Kathryn Riley '10 (11-3) in the top of the sixth, benefiting from three walks and a hit-by-pitch to open up a 4-1 advantage.  The Bullets would pick up an insurance run in the seventh with three consecutive hits off Garnet reliever Marianne Klingaman '07.

Kim Rubino (16-6) collected the win for Gettysburg, striking out seven batters while allowing only four Swarthmore hits in seven innings of work.

Swarthmore had their backs against the wall in the second game.  Fourth-seed Dickinson was looking to bust out after just dropping a heart-breaker to top-seed Ursinus 1-0 in 11 innings.

Garnet sophomore right-hander Alexandra Zelaski settled things down immediately, allowing only one base runner in the first three innings.  Gold provided some run support, blasting her second home run of the season, this one to straight away center, to put Swarthmore up 1-0.

Zelaski ran into some tight spots in the next two innings, escaping from bases-loaded jams in the fourth and fifth to preserve the lead.  Gold again fueled the Swarthmore offense, driving in Sendelsky with a one-out triple down the right-field line before scoring on the ensuing throw to make it 3-0 Garnet.

Dickinson (17-14) began to pick at Zelaski, using a Swarthmore error and a two-run home run by Karrie Brondell to make it a one-run game.  When two more Red Devil batters reached, Riley relieved Zelaski and got two more outs to keep Swarthmore ahead.

Swarthmore picked up their starting pitcher with a three-run seventh to bust open a 6-2 lead.  Ashley Brandt '07 and Riley had base hits and scored as the Garnet kept their 2007 season alive to see another day.

Zelaski (6-4) earned the win after striking out two batters in 5.1 innings while Riley registered her first career save by tossing 1.2 innings while allowing only two hits.

The Garnet continue their quest for a championship on Sunday, needing to sweep three games to lift the trophy.  Swarthmore faces Ursinus at 10:00 a.m. and should they win, will need to take back-to-back games from Gettysburg.

Swarthmore Collects Medals at CC Championships

May 6th, 2007

COMPLETE RESULTS

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Swarthmore runners Ross Weller '08 and Cait Mullarkey '09 picked up individual medals, long jumper Matt Turner leaped to a silver, while the men's 4x800 relay team broke the school record as the Garnet competed at the first two days of the 2007 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Haverford College on Friday and Saturday.

The Garnet 4x800 relay squad collected the bronze medal with a school-record time of 7:49.50. Senior Matt Schiller dropped five seconds off his personal-best to put Swarthmore in great position after the lead leg--senior Dillon McGrew, sophomore Connor Darby (1:55.90) and senior Vernon Chaplin held it together to take down the previous record of 8:02.77 set in 2005.

Schiller also put up the fourth-fastest time in the 400 preliminaries (50.64), making the final on Sunday afternoon. Garnet freshman Mariel Feigen posted a personal-best in the 400 intermediate hurdles to also qualify for the Sunday finals.

Weller made a stirring kick in the final strides of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to split up a Haverford 1-2 finish, taking home the silver medal with a time of 9:34.82.

Mullarkey narrowly missed breaking her own school record in the women's steeplechase, roping in the bronze medal with a time of 11:43.87. She also breezed through her 800 meter heat, qualifying for Sunday's finals with the second-best time of 2:22.78.

Turner came through in the clutch Saturday's long jump competition. The spindly first-year sat in second place following the preliminary round. He went into his last jump of the finals still in second place and vaulted into first place with a leap of 22' 2.5". F&M's Kwaku Anno responded to the challenge and claimed the gold by recording a jump of 23' 2" in his final attempt.

Friday night saw a trio of Swarthmore distance runners set personal-best times in the 10,000 meter event. Sophomore Dan Hodson finised 10th (33:01.06) to earn the fifth-fastest time in school history while teammate Nat Erb-Satullo '07 was right behind in 11th (33:04.94) for the sixth-fastest clocking. Sophomore Bess Ritter picked up a point in the women's 10,000 by running eighth (39:50.86), sliding behind her sister Carrie Ritter '06 for fifth all-time at Swarthmore.

Swarthmore will take part in the final day of competition at the Centennial Championships on Sunday, starting with the finals of the field events at 11:00 a.m. and the 1,500 meter race at approximately 11:20 a.m.
