Bears Eliminate Swarthmore from CC Championships
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Ursinus Bears ousted Swarthmore from the Centennial Conference championships for the second straight season, prevailing over the Garnet 1-0 in a classic pitchers' duel Sunday morning at E. Frost Snell Field.
The game's starting pitchers, freshmen Lauren Davis from Ursinus and Kathryn Riley from Swarthmore, gave the Centennial Conference a chilling preview of what is to come over the next three seasons. The pair, both named All-Centennial in their first season, combined to allow on three hits on Sunday morning while striking out 15 batters. Davis (11-5) came out the winner on this day, fanning 10 batters while limiting the Garnet to a base hit (single by junior Katherine Gold) and a walk in seven innings. Riley (11-4) was just as dominant, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in six innings.
The Bears (30-9) scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, speedy left fielder Erin McHugh reached on a bunt single, stole second, and came around to score on a Mary Reid base hit to center. Reid was tagged out on the play by Swarthmore first baseman Kelly Siano '07, ending the rally, but the damage was done.
The Garnet (22-13) await word of a possible ECAC Tournament bid; the field is expected to be announced on Monday afternoon. The 2007 ECAC Tournament is set to take place this coming weekend, May 12-13.
