#3 Emory Wins Swarthmore Regional,<br> Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The third-ranked Emory (Ga.) Eagles (20-8) defeated the host Swarthmore Garnet (7-10) by a score of 5-0 Sunday at Edwin Faulkner Courts to advance on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament. Emory will travel to Washington University of St. Louis for a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, May 15.
Emory, the defending national champion, and Swarthmore easily advanced to Sundays' finals by winning second-round matches on Saturday by identical 5-0 margins over the Baruch College Bearcats and the College of New Jersey Lions, respectively.
In doubles action on Sunday, the Garnet stayed close early on but Emory came on strong to win all three matches by comfortable margins. Emory's No. 3 team of Chris Jordan (Granger, Ind. / Penn) and Hardy Ehlers (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) took the first point, getting past Swarthmore's Willy Nolan (Portland, Ore. / Grant) and Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) by a score of 8-3. At No. 2, the Eagles' Michael Kaufman (Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Oliver Lopp (Hilden, Germany / Diettrich-Bonhoeffer) took the final seven games to defeat Swarthmore's Brian Nalitt (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) and Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingstown, R.I. / South Kingstown) 8-2. Finally, Emory's No. 1 team of Michael Good win (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) and Yoji Masuoka (Tokyo, Japan / Saddlebrook Prep. Fla), ranked #3 in the country, fought off Swarthmore's Jon Reiss (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) and Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolaui School) 8-3.
Emory retained control during singles' play. At No. 4, Ehlers ended Nolan's nine-match winning streak with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. One court over, Lopp ended Nalitt's streak of seven wins in a row, 6-2 6-2 at No. 3 to close out the match.
