Reynolds, Reiss Selected For NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS -- Swarthmore College seniors Sonya Reynolds and Jonathan Reiss have been selected to be among 64 tennis players participating in the 2007 NCAA Division III Tennis Individual Championships on May 18-20.
Reynolds, twice selected All-America, established a record of 17-6 at No. 1 singles in 2006-07 and will make her third consecutive appearance at the Individual Championships. Reynolds, an economics major, is currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic South region and was named ITA Atlantic South Player to Watch in 2006. She led the Garnet women to their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this season--Swarthmore bowed out in the second round to eventual national champion Washington & Lee (Va.).
Reynolds, who was named All-Centennial Conference for singles' and doubles in 2006-07, will face Lauren Hom from Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), who is 25-7 this season and currently ranked fourth in the Central Region, in the first round at the University of Mary Washington (Va.) on May 18. Reiss, making his second appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships, has battled through injuries in 2006-07 to post a record of 11-7 in 2006-07 to lead the Swarthmore men to their 30th NCAA appearance in 31 seasons. The Garnet (7-10) hosted the NCAA Regionals for the second time in three seasons, defeating the College of New Jersey in the second round 5-0 before falling to Emory (Ga.), the 2006 national champion and 2007 finalist, in the regional final.
Reiss, ranked fourth in the Atlantic South Region, will face William Ellison from Claremont-Mudd Scripps (Calif.), the fifth-ranked player in the West Region with a 20-9 record this season, in first-round action at Washington University of St. Louis (Mo.) on May 18.
