College Bearcats 5-0 while host Swarthmore Garnet also picked up a 5-0 win over The College of New Jersey Lions in second-round action of the 2007 NCAA Division III men's tennis championships Saturday afternoon at Edwin Faulkner Courts.

Emory (19-8), the defending national champion, and Swarthmore (7-9), a quarterfinalist in 2006, will play Sunday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m. on Faulkner Courts for a spot in the national quarterfinals, set for Tuesday, May 15 at Washington University of St. Louis.

In the morning match, the Eagles No.1 doubles' team, Michael Good win (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) and Yoji Masuoka (Tokyo, Japan / Saddlebrook Prep., Fla)  rolled past Baruch's Emanuel Imperial (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph by the Sea) and Timmy Leon (Flushing, N.Y. / Francis-Lewis) 8-0 while No. 3 team from Emory, Chris Jordan (Granger, Ind. / Penn) and Hardy Ehlers (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) won by the same 8-0 margin over  Baruch's Dimitru Pitu (Whitestone, N.Y. / Holy Cross) and Ramon Shane-Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica / Middle College HS).     The Eagles completed the sweep of doubles' play when the No. 2 pairing of Michael Kaufman (Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Oliver Lopp (Hilden, Germany / Diettrich-Bonhoeffer) won 7-2 over the Bearcats' tandem of Alex Sokol (Staten Island, N.Y. / Susan Wagner) and Michalis Zevlakis (Astoria, N.Y. / Flushing).

Goodwin and Masuoka, ranked #3 and #6 in the country respectively in singles, rolled to identical 6-0, 6-0 victories to clinch the match for the Eagles.  Goodwin closed out Imperial in the No. 1 match and Masuoka took care of Leon at No. 2 in a tidy 25 minutes.

In the second match, Swarathmore (7-9) took an early 3-0 lead after doubles.  Willy Nolan (Portland, Ore. / Grant) and Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) picked up the first point for the Garnet with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over the Lions'  Jeremy Eckardt (Belle Mead, N.J. / Montgomery) and Willy Daly (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough).  Swarthmore's Brian Nalitt (Short  Hills, N.J. / Millburn) and Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingstown, R.I. / South Kingstown) out-lasted TCNJ's  Eric Ferriere (Branchville, N.J. / Kittantinny) and Corey Ball (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) at No. 2 by a score of 9-7.  The No. 1 Garnet pair, Jon Reiss (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) and Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolaui School) completed the sweep with an 8-6 over Michael Klimchak (Clark, N.J. / Arthur L. Johnson) and Roger Mosteller (Medford Lakes, N.J. / Sewanee).

The Garnet held the momentum into singles' play as Nolan and Nalitt, both freshmen, picked up straight set victories to seal the win for Swarthmore.  Nolan won his ninth straight match, defeating Ball 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 while Nalitt downed Ferriere 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 for his seventh straight victory.

Swarthmore avenged an early-season 8-1 loss to the Lions, advancing to the regional finals for the second straight season--the Garnet defeated Mary Washington 4-2 on May 7, 2006 to make the quarterfinals.

Baruch completes its season with an overall record of 12-5 while the College of New Jersey finished with a record of 11-3.

Sartori Named All-Centennial

May 4th, 2007

2007 ALL-CENTENNIAL TEAM

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore College defender Dan Sartori '08 has been named a 2007 All-Centennial Conference honorable mention selection, as voted by the conference coaches and announced by the Conference office Thursday afternoon.

Sartori, a junior, led the team with 44 ground balls and anchored a Garnet defense that allowed 7.8 goals per game, good enough for sixth in the Centennial Conference, the strongest men's lacrosse conference in Division III with four teams nationally-ranked during the 2007 season.

A biology and economics double-major, Sartori has started in 39 of the 40 games he has played in a Garnet uniform. He earned a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for the second year in a row.

Sartori is the first Swarthmore player to earn All-Centennial honors since midfielder Tim Chryssikos '05 made second-team and defender Charlie Sussman '05 was selected honorable mention in 2005.  He is the eight Swarthmore men's lacrosse player selected for All-Centennial and the fifth defender.

Swarthmore finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 5-7, going 2-6 in the Centennial.

Three Garnet Women Named All-Centennial

May 4th, 2007

LANCASTER, Pa. - Swarthmore College junior Katherine Gold, sophomore Christine Sendelsky and freshman Kathryn Riley have been named to the 2007 All-Centennial Conference team. Sendelsky and Riley are first-team selections and Gold received honorable mention, as voted on by the conference head coaches.

Sendelsky started all 16 Conference games at second base, hitting .306 (15 for 49) with 12 runs scored and eight RBIs while leading the Centennial in times hit-by-pitch (four).  She registered a base hit in 13 of the last 14 Conference games and committed just two errors out of 70 chances in the field (.971 fielding percentage).

Sendelsky is the first player in school history to make First Team twice--in 2006 she was the 25th freshman in Centennial (first at Swarthmore) to earn the distinction.

Kathryn Riley '10 is the first Swarthmore pitcher named All-Centennial.

Riley is the first Swarthmore pitcher to make All-Centennial after leading the Conference with a 1.20 ERA and a .162 opponents' batting average in nine appearances in 2007.  She posted a 7-2 record in the Centennial, striking out 37 batters while allowing 30 hits in 52.2 innings pitched.  Overall, Riley posted a record of 11-2 in 2007 with a 0.92 ERA in 83.2 innings, tallying three shut-outs while striking out 66 batters.  She also made a significant impact at the plate, leading the team in eight offensive categories--batting average (.372), hits (35), doubles (8), home runs (3), total bases (52), slugging percentage (.553), walks (12) and on-base percentage (.464).

Riley was named Centennial Pitcher of the Week for April 9-15 after pitching her second shut-out of the season in a 4-0 Swarthmore win over Muhlenberg on April 10, striking out nine batters with no walks.  She then allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out four in a 9-6 win at Gettysburg on April 14.

Katherine Gold '08 has 64 RBIs in her career.

Gold, a team captain, started all 16 Conference games at shortstop, leading the Conference in walks (9) while ranking ninth in on-base percentage (.442).  She hit .326 (14 for 43) in the Centennial and finished second on the team by batting .330 overall with a .495 slugging percentage and seven stolen bases (second on the team).

Gold was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week for the week of March 11-18 after being named All-Tournament at the 2007 Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design.  Gold hit .474 (9 for 19) during the tournament with two doubles, a triple, a home run while scoring four runs and driving in five more.  Gold's highlight game came in a 4-1 win over Hood on March 15 when she was a perfect 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and two RBIs.

Riley is the 26th Centennial freshman to make First Team and the fourth player from Swarthmore.

Swarthmore (21-11 overall, 11-5 Centennial) had one of the best seasons in school history in 2007, breaking the school record for conference wins while earning its second consecutive Centennial playoff berth (also a program-first).

Four Swarthmore Squads Playoff-Bound This Weekend

May 1st, 2007

It promises to be an exciting weekend for Garnet fans as four teams are headed to the playoffs in their respective sports.  The men's tennis team will host NCAA Division III Tournament action for the second time in three years, women's tennis travels to Virginia for a fifth consecutive NCAA appearance, while the softball and track & field squads hit the road on their quest for a Centennial Championship.

Swarthmore freshman Willy Nolan has won eight straight matches in 2006-07.

The rich tradition of Swarthmore men's tennis--four national titles, 30 NCAA appearances in 31 seasons, quarterfinals appearance in 2006--continues at the Edwin Faulkner Tennis Courts on May 4-6 with the first three rounds of the 2007 NCAA Division III Team Championship.  The Garnet (6-9), led by senior Jon Reiss, the fourth-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South region, received a first-round bye and will face the College of New Jersey on Saturday, May 5 at 1:30 p.m.   The Lions (11-2) downed Swarthmore 8-1 on April 6 in Ewing, N.J.

Alvernia College (8-1) and Baruch College (11-4) face off in first round action on Friday, May 4 at 3:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to face third-ranked Emory University (14-7) in the first second-round match on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  The final tennis match of the weekend will take place on Sunday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to be played on May 15-20 at Washington University in St. Louis.  Click here for the complete bracket.

Sonya Reynolds '07 was selected for the NCAA Division III Individual Championship for the third time.

The Garnet women battled through un-timely injuries in 2006-07 to receive a fifth-consecutive invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament.  Swarthmore (12-6) is currently ranked 17th in the country and will be led by two-time All-America senior Sonya Reynolds.  The Garnet travel to Lexington, Va. on Friday, May 4 to face Cabrini (12-4) at 10:00 a.m. Host Washington & Lee University (20-1) will face the winner of Friday's first-round affair on Saturday, May 5 in a 10:00 a.m. match.  Click here for the complete team bracket.

Reynolds also received her third consecutive invitation to the NCAA Individual Championships.  The individual championships include 32 single players and 16 double teams.  The singles and doubles championships will be held May 18-20 at the University of Mary Washington Battleground Complex hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.  Reynolds is the lone representative from the Centennial Conference in the singles' competition and will look to join Anjani Reddy '04 as the only two-time All-America singles' players in Swarthmore women's tennis history.  (Reynolds is already All-America in doubles' with classmate Sara Sargent after winning the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional in the fall).

After an exciting sweep of McDaniel last Sunday resulting in a school-record 11 conference wins, the Swarthmore softball team will be the #2 seed in the Centennial playoffs, to be hosted by Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa.  The softball tournament is run differently from most Centennial tourneys--it is a double-elimination event in which each team will play at least two games.

Swarthmore will open up against Gettysburg on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.; the Garnet swept the Bullets 3-1 and 9-6 on April 14.  The Garnet will then play one more game on Saturday against either Ursinus or Dickinson.  Three teams will advance to Sunday's action, which also gets going at 10:00 a.m. Click here for championship web site.

Captain Kelly Siano '07 crushed a home run in last year's Centennial playoffs.

Swarthmore's outdoor track & field teams will get to sleep in their own beds at night as the 2007 Centennial Championships will be contested over on the Main Line at Haverford College.  The three-day event gets going with a limited schedule on Friday; the Garnet will enter contestants in the meet-opening pole vault competition and the evening 10k races.

Largely devoted to trials, Saturday will be highlighted by the long jump and steeplechase events.  In the men's long jump, slated for 11:00 a.m., Garnet freshman Matt Turner will compete for the title; his jump of 21-8 3/4 is the second longest by a Centennial athlete this year.  Two Swarthmore runners--juniors Ross Weller and Jon Shoop--respectively hold the 3rd and 5th fastest times in the conference this year.  Weller took home a bronze medal in last year's steeplechase championships.  On the women's side, sophomore Cait Mullarkey's 11:42.42 in the steeplechase is the third-best CC regular-season time.

Ross Weller '08 won the 5,000 at the Danny Curran on April 2, posting an all-time top-ten time at Swarthmore.

Most of the points may be scored in Sunday's final heats.   For the women, Mullarkey currently holds the third-fastest CC time in the 400 hurdles (set for 1:40 p.m.) and the sixth-fastest time in the 800m (1:20 p.m.).  Senior Sam Graffeo will look to reprise her 2005 silver medal-winning performance in the shot put at 1:00 p.m.

On the men's side, senior Vernon Chaplin will look to build on his season-low time in the 1,500 meters last weekend and score points in the event for the third straight year (including a bronze medal in 2005).  Turner will look to score points in the triple jump (11:00 a.m.), and the perennial-strong Garnet relay teams are sure to provide excitement towards the end of the meet.  Click here for the championship web site.

Moody, Zwick Make All-Conference, Garnet Tie for Second

April 30th, 2007

CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

PEACH BOTTOM, Pa. -- Garnet seniors Zach Moody and Eric Zwick earned All-Centennial selections and the Swarthmore golf team posted its best finish ever at the Centennial Conference Championships, tying for second place at the conclusion of the three-day event at Pilgrim's Oak Golf Club.

Franklin & Marshall won the overall team championship with a three-day total of 924, followed by Swarthmore and McDaniel at 933.  Muhlenberg was fourth (944), followed by Gettyburg (970), Ursinus (978), and Dickinson (979).

The Garnet posted a team score of 306, the best showing of the season and the low team-round on the final day of CC competition by six strokes (McDaniel had a 312).  It is the best team round by Swarthmore since they put up a 305 at Edgmont Country Club on April 24, 2006.

Zwick maintained his steady demeanor on the course, posting three consecutive rounds in the 70s (74-78-78 = 230) to become the first Garnet golfer to make All-Centennial two straight years.  Moody saved his best for last, shooting a two-over 74 on the final day, tying individual champion Zach Lavoie from McDaniel for the best final round.  The 74 is the second-lowest of his career—the senior shot a 73 at Bent Creek on Sept. 13, 2004.  Moody's overall score of 230 (81-75-74) was only three back of Lavoie (77-76-74 = 227) on a tightly packed leader board.

Sophomore David Lau made the top-ten after carding a final-round 79 to tie for 10th with an overall score of 235.  Freshman Jeff Lazarus carded a four-over 76 on Sunday, the best round of his young college career, to finish tied for 14th (81-81-76 = 238).  Sophomore Michael Bernasek rounded out the Swarthmore contingent with a gutsy 79 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 31st (82-91-79 = 252)

Dickinson Pens Dreary Ending for Garnet on Senior Day

April 30th, 2007

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The visiting Red Devils from Dickinson used a pair of complete-game pitching performances to sweep a Centennial doubleheader from Swarthmore Sunday afternoon at Clothier Fields.  The Red Devils won the first game 6-3 and took the second affair by the score of 13-3 in the final games of 2007 for both squads.

Swarthmore honored its two seniors, captain Sammy Faeder and Noah Cooper-Harris, in a ceremony between the games one and two.  Faeder responded with two hits and two RBIs on the day while Cooper-Harris also swung the bat with authority, picking up two doubles and two RBIs in the final collegiate baseball game for each young man.

Dickinson (12-24 overall, 8-10 CC) rode the arm of junior Brian Kelley (7.0 IP, three runs, three K's) in the first game, putting up two runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Sophomore shortstop Matt Catania led the visitors, going 2-for-3 with two runs while right-fielder Ryan Stearrett added a base hit, scored two runs and drove in another.

Garnet southpaw Jimmy Gill '10 (0-3) took the loss, striking out two in three innings while reliever Sean Varsalona '09 contributed four strong innings, striking out three while not allowing a base hit.  Cooper-Harris launced a moon-shot double to left in the third inning, driving in junior Scott Dalane who had reached on a hit by pitch and swiped second base.

The Red Devils benefited from a five-run third to open a 6-0 lead early on in the second game.  Swarthmore battled back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, as junior catcher Andy Bender and Cooper-Harris smacked back-to-back doubles.  Faeder plated Cooper-Harris with a base hit of his own, cutting the lead to 6-2 Devils.

Dickinson broke the game open with a four-spot in the fifth and then added another run in the sixth to go ahead 11-2.

Red Devils starter Matt Eonta evened his record at 5-5 on the season by spreading six hits over nine innings, striking out six in the process.

Garnet junior Justin Chen (0-6) took the loss for the hometown team, pitching three innings while allowing seven hits with one strikeout.

Swarthmore concludes the 2007 season with an overall record of 4-25 and 2-16 in the Centennial.

Seniors Terrorize McDaniel in Sweep, Garnet Returning to CC Playoffs

April 30th, 2007

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Marianne Klingaman '07 tossed a complete-game victory and Julie Monaghan '07 smacked a game-winning double, as the Garnet reached the Centennial Conference playoffs by sweeping a doubleheader from the Green Terror of McDaniel College, 6-3 and 4-3, at Clothier Fields Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, McDaniel (15-19 overall, 7-9 CC) took the lead in the third inning, plating three runs off of an infield single by Kelli Workmesiter'09 and RBI singles by catcher Emily Trainor '10 and pitcher Jess Smith '09.

These were the only runs surrendered by victorious Garnet freshman pitcher Kathryn Riley (11-2), who threw a complete-game four-hitter while registering seven strikeouts. With her eleventh victory, Riley is tied for second-most wins in a season for a Garnet pitcher (11) with Kim Mullin (1985) and Alexandra Zelaski '09 (2006).

The Garnet bats retaliated in the bottom of the third inning. Following an error and a base on balls that put sophomores Kristin Caspar and Lauren Walker on base, senior Ashley Brandt executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance them to second and third. After Riley walked to load the bases, sophomore Christine Sendelsky smoked an RBI single to leftfield, scoring Caspar. Siano followed up with a single of her own to knock in Walker. Riley then scored on an RBI groundout by catcher Michele Perch '10 to tie the game at three. Perch also contributed a solid game behind the plate, throwing out two baserunners who were attempting to steal second base.

Swarthmore (21-11 overall, 11-5 CC) took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Both Caspar and Walker reached on singles, were advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Brandt, and later scored on an error by the Green Terror second baseman to give the Garnet a 5-3 lead.

In the fifth inning, Garnet senior captain Kelly Siano tacked on another run by smoking a home run over the right-centerfield fence. With that round-tripper, Siano moved into a tie on for most dingers on the team with Riley (3).

With the 6-3 victory in the first game, the Garnet clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs for the second season in a row, marking the first time that the Swarthmore softball program has accomplished that feat.

In the second contest, Swarthmore was able to pull out some last-inning heroics to defeat the Green Terror, riding the arm of Klingaman to complete the sweep of the Green Terror on Senior Day and improve the team's seeding in the Centennial Conference playoffs.

The Garnet bats were silent through most of the second contest, as McDaniel pitcher Christina Morley (1-7) surrendered no runs on four hits through the first six innings of the game.

Down three runs and on the verge of being shut out for the first time this season, the Garnet bats exploded in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a leadoff single by Sendelsky and a towering double by Katie Gold '08, Siano ripped a single to centerfield that scored Sendelsky. Perch followed with an RBI double to bring home Gold. Monaghan completed the comeback with a double to left-centerfield that plated Siano and Perch, giving the Garnet the 4-3 victory.

The Garnet were led offensively in the second game by Gold, who went two-for-three with two doubles and a run scored, and Perch, who contributed a single, double, RBI, and scored a run.

Klingaman (3-3) pitched through a couple of jams to pick up the victory, surrendering three runs on eight hits, while striking out three Green Terror batters. This win gives Klingaman twenty-one victories in her solid Garnet pitching career.

With this sweep over McDaniel, the Garnet finished their Centennial Conference play with an 11-5 record, surpassing last year's record for most conference wins (9). This also marks the first time in the program's history that Swarthmore has made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

As the second-seeded team—the highest seed in the program's history— the Garnet will face the Gettysburg (#3 seed) to begin play at the Centennial Conference playoffs at top-seed Ursinus College on Saturday, May 5th. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Blue Jays Take Title From Garnet

April 30th, 2007

MATCH RESULTS

BALTIMORE  -- 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Swarthmore women's tennis team 5-4 in the championship match of the 2007 Centennial Conference Women's Tennis Championships Sunday afternoon.

Swarthmore had won three of the last four Centennial Championships and five overall (most in Conference history)--the titles came in 1995, 2001, '03, '05 and '06.  It is the first title in school history for Johns Hopkins, earning the Blue Jays an automatic bid to participate in the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament (also a first).

The Garnet (12-5 overall), seeded second in the Championship and ranked sixth in the Atlantic South region, jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles' action. After the Blue Jays won at No. 1 doubles, Rachel Wallwork '10 and Waverly Lutz '07 won their third straight match, defeating Tanya Gulnik and Ellen Berlinghof 8-5 at No. 3 to even the overall match at 1-1.  The Garnet duo of Marissa Matthews '07 and Erica Lukoski '08 kept their perfect record in tact, moving to 8-0 on the season with an 8-6 over Amanda Schubert and Becky Busch at No. 2.

The Swarthmore momentum continued in singles' play--senior Sara Sargent cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Busch and classmate Sonya Reynolds, the fourth-ranked player in the region, eased past JHU's Brittany Matava (named 2007 Centennial Conference Player of the Year earlier in the week) by a score of 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, putting Swarthmore in front 4-2.

The Blue Jays (16-3) pulled off the comeback by claiming hard-fought decisions at No. 2, 4 and 6 singles to bring the championship trophy to Maryland for just the second time in Conference history (Washington claimed a share of the title in 2002 when the championship was awarded based on regular season records).

Swarthmore awaits word of a possible at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Championships--the brackets for team play, as well as individual entrants, will be announced Monday, April 30.
