Gettysburg Takes Two From Garnet

Patrick Christmas '08 and Scott Young '06 (above) had five hits apiece, but Swarthmore stranded 17 runners in a Sunday afternoon double header at Gettysburg College, falling to the Bullets 5-4 and 11-1.

The Bullets (17-16, 10-5 CC) got going early, scoring three runs in the first inning of game one. Gettysburg assumed a 4-0 lead with another score off Swarthmore starter Alex Ryan-Bond '07 in the fourth.

Young got the Garnet (5-21, 3-13 CC) on the board in the top of the fifth. The junior left fielder moved up on a passed ball, stole third, and came home when the catcher's throw sailed into the outfield.

Swarthmore tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth when catcher Ben Mendelson '08 cleared the bases with a three-run double off Bullet starter Tobin Whittman.

Gettysburg secured the victory in their final at bat, benefitting from two hits and a Garnet miscue to win 5-4.

Ryan-Bond took the loss for Swarthmore, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on eleven hits while striking out three batters.

Young was a perfect three for three with two runs scored and Christmas contributed two base hits and a run.

A slug-fest ensued in the second game, as the two teams combined for 23 hits off five pitchers. The Bullets were able to plate 11 runs, while the Garnet had no such luck, stranding 12 runners on base.

Christmas led Swarthmore with three hits while Young, Jody Fisher '05, Ian Adelstein '07, and Mendelson had two hits each.

The Garnet conclude their 2005 campaign on Saturday, April 30th when they host long-time rival Haverford College in a 12:30 p.m. Centennial double header.
