Garnet Captures Fourth Centennial Crown
The Garnet (12-5, 10-0) used an 8-1 decision over Gettysburg (4-7, 3-6) to post a perfect 10-0 mark and capture its fourth Centennial Conference Championship and third over the last five seasons.
Swarthmore won its seventh match in a row and its 19th consecutive Centennial contest in posting its fourth perfect conference mark.
The Garnet jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a sweep of the doubles matches. Jenna Adelberg '06 and Waverly Lutz '07 posted an 8-6 victory over Sara Marian Seibert and Ali Moyer in their first ever match at No. 1 while Erica Lukoski '08 and Sara Sargent '07 breezed to an 8-0 decision at No. 2 over Katie Ferraro and Caroline Kunkle. Katie Berry '05, playing in her final home match, teamed with Sonia Vallabh '06 to rally for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Laura Helland and Beth Lucas to complete the sweep.
Sonya Reynolds '07 won her eighth straight singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Seibert at No. 1 and Sargent picked up her second win of the day with a 6-1, 7-5 nod over Moyer at No. 2. Lutz went 2-for-2 on the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ferraro at No. 3 and Lukoski posted a double win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Kunkle at No. 4. Vallabh also earned her second victory of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 pasting of Helland.
Lucas earned the only Bullet victory on the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 decision over Adelberg at No. 6.
This upcoming weekend, the Garnet will host the Centennial Conference Men's and Women's Tournament.
