Garnet Clinches Conference Title
Swarthmore won their sixth consecutive match to clinch a share of the 2005 Centennial Conference title, downing Dickinson 8-1 in Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet (11-5, 9-0 CC) have won 18 consecutive Conference matches and can secure sole possession of their second Centennial in three years with a win over Gettysburg on Sunday afternoon.
Sonya Reynolds '07, the seventh-ranked singles' player in the Atlantic South Region, defeated Erica Tobias 6-0, 6-4 at No.1 and teamed up with Waverly Lutz '07 to beat Tobias and Julie Chafant 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Reynolds (above) has beaten seven straight opponents in singles' play, winning fourteen consecutive sets in the process.
The Red Devils (7-7, 4-5 CC) secured their lone point in No. 2 doubles action, as Amanda Kaplan and Emily Ruben downed Elli Suzuki '06 and Emily Townsend '07 by a score of 8-5. The Garnet won the other doubles' match, as Oriana Galardi-Este '06 and Sonali Shahi '06 defeated Satomi Nakane and Katherine Paul 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.
Suzuki dropped her first set at No.2 doubles yet rallied to defeat Chafant 2-6, 6-4, 10-5. Townsend re-grouped in singles' play as well, winning 7-6 (1), 6-4 at No. 3 over Kaplan.
Lutz, a double-winner , and Erica Lukoski '08 easily won at No.4 and No. 5 singles', respectively. Lutz defeated Ruben 6-2, 6-2 and Lukoski downed Melissa Nolan 6-2, 6-3. Jamie Midyette '08 completed the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jamie Wolf in No. 6 singles' action.
