Short Swat Squad Comes Up Short

October 5th, 2005

A depleted Garnet women's soccer squad battled Ursinus (8-2-1, 3-1-1 CC ) in Collegeville on Wednesday evening, dropping a 1-0 decision in Centennial Conference action.

Head coach Todd Anckaitis dressed 13 players, desimated by injuries to some key players and class committments by others. "We gave a gritty performance even though there were many obstacles out of our control that we had to overcome," Anckaitis said.  "Combine the tough field conditions, a 4:00 midweek game away, and a loss of several key personnel, and we had some real challenges before Ursinus even stepped on the field."

Even with those challenges and a strong Ursinus squad in opposition the Garnet took it to them early in the first half, creating multiple chances early to put a crooked number on the board.

Ursinus got a break when defender Alexandra Bensimhon '09 came up hobbled on a [Bears] runner, Noelle Bisinger, through the box and Bisinger finished off a cross to tuck the game-winner inside the near post.  It was the fifth game-winner of the season for the dangerous Bisinger.

The Garnet didn't let the goal break their spirits; Nicole Oberfoell '06 filled in for the hobbled Bensimhon, and the Garnet didn't miss a beat.

"Caitlin Mullarkey played a heck of a game for us in the back helping Nicole, being a field leader, and finding time to do what she does best defend one on one," Anckaitis said.

The Garnet got another great game from freshman goalkeeper Lauren Walker '09, who made nine saves. Walker even tallied her first collegiate penalty kick save as she stuffed an Ursinus attacker after a controversial call in the box.  Sophmore goaltender Kristen Traband '08, inserted at the 66:39 mark, continued the high-level of play in the box, making three saves including a diving save on a one-on-one opportunity when the Bears' Sarah Gardner sent the ball off the crossbar and the rebounded shot hit a Garnet defender.

Many positives have come out of the last couple matches; Swarthmore's attack leads the Centennial with a 71% shots-on-goal percentage during conference games. That continued on Wednesday night as many of their chances were dangerous.

"That [shots-on-goal stat] is a phenomenal number and we've placed a lot of emphasis on getting quality chances," said Anckaitis.  "The team has done a great job of improving in this area."

Swarthmore (2-7-3, 0-3-2 CC) 6is hoping the percentages will be in their favor when the Garnet return home for their next game, hosting nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m. Anckaitis said of Friday's match-up.  "Hopkins is a tough squad but we're going to come out battling as we always do."

Sophomore Second Half Sends Swarthmore Streak to Seven

October 4th, 2005

Sophomores Michael Bonesteel and Brandon Washington broke open a scoreless game with three goals in nine minutes, leading to a 3-0 Swarthmore victory over Albright on a foggy Tuesday evening at Clothier Field. It is the seventh consecutive win for the Garnet (10-1 overall, 4-0 Centennial).

The first half was a hard-fought draw as neither team could get any offense; the score remained 0-0 at the intermission.

Unfortunately for the Lions, Swarthmore began the second half playing like their hair was on fire.

Washington chased down a ball on the left sideline, deftly keeping the ball inbounds while touching it towards the corner flag. The sophomore midfielder out ran the Albright defender and crossed the ball across the goal mouth. Washington called for classmate Bonesteel, who was streaking up the right flank, to finish the play. Bonesteel granted his teammate's wish, sending a mid-air volley into the left side pocket for a 1-0 Swarthmore lead at 49:05.

The tandem switched roles for the second Swarthmore goal, scored just three minutes later at 52:04. This time Bonesteel set the table, touching a ball back to midfielder Patrick Christmas '08 who crossed the ball from the right corner on into the Lions' penalty box. The ball found its way to Washington's head and the Texas native flipped in his third goal of the season, extending the Garnet lead to 2-0.

Bonesteel was the recipient of a Swarthmore bounce on his second goal of the night. Midfielder Chris Szeto '09 clanged a shot off the left post at 57:14, and the ball bounced off the inside corner back across the goal mouth where Bonesteel was all alone with an empty net. The ball officially went in at 57:15 and Bonesteel had his third goal of the year.

The Swarthmore defense held up once again, blanking their seventh opponent of the year. Senior goalkeeper Reuben Heyman-Kantor made two saves and sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe also made a pair of saves to combine on the shut out.

Heyman-Kantor extended his scoreless streak to 653:26, dating back a 1-0 loss to Vassar on September 10.

In their next contest, the Garnet travel north to Allentown, Pa. for a 7:00 p.m. match with Centennial rival Muhlenberg.

The Garnet were the first ones on the board, putting up a score with 13 minutes left in the half.  Sarah Hobbs '06 controlled the ball at the top of the Shorewomen box, and made a nifty pass through a couple of Washington defenders to Tocchet.  Tocchet made one touch and then lifted the ball into the top left corner of the net for her team-high fourth goal of the season.

The Garnet went into halftime with the 1-0 lead intact.

The Shorewomen struck back midway through the second half, evening the score 1-1.  Midfielder Sarah Yarbrough lofted a corner to the far left side of the goal where charging defender Kate Dulany headed home her first goal of the season at 65:13.

The two squads battled back and forth with Swarthmore getting plenty of good scoring chances, tallying 11 shots on goal to two for the Shorewomen.  Washington keeper Megan Russell had a strong game in her collegiate debut between the pipes, making 10 saves to keep the score knotted.

Swarthmore got the first opportunity to end the game in the opening minutes of the second overtime.  Kendal Rinko '09 played a ball into the box and Tocchet touched it ahead of the Washington defender.  Tocchet took two steps and fired but Russell came off her line and deflected the rocket.  The score remained tied through the ten-minute extra session and the teams headed to a second overtime.

The Shorewomen got their opportunity in the second overtime when Garnet keeper Lauren Walker '09 came out to kick away a loose ball.  Walker got tangled with a Washington forward, leaving Yarborough with the ball and an empty net 20 yards away.  Yarbrough took a shot but the ball bounced wide left.

Walker made one save in goal for Swarthmore (2-6-3, 0-2-2 CC).
