Garnet Battle to Tie with Shorewomen

Forward Danielle Tocchet '08 scored her fourth goal of the season as the Garnet battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes with Washington (Md.) on Clothier Field on Saturday night.

The Garnet were the first ones on the board, putting up a score with 13 minutes left in the half.  Sarah Hobbs '06 controlled the ball at the top of the Shorewomen box, and made a nifty pass through a couple of Washington defenders to Tocchet.  Tocchet made one touch and then lifted the ball into the top left corner of the net for her team-high fourth goal of the season.

The Garnet went into halftime with the 1-0 lead intact.

The Shorewomen struck back midway through the second half, evening the score 1-1.  Midfielder Sarah Yarbrough lofted a corner to the far left side of the goal where charging defender Kate Dulany headed home her first goal of the season at 65:13.

The two squads battled back and forth with Swarthmore getting plenty of good scoring chances, tallying 11 shots on goal to two for the Shorewomen.  Washington keeper Megan Russell had a strong game in her collegiate debut between the pipes, making 10 saves to keep the score knotted.

Swarthmore got the first opportunity to end the game in the opening minutes of the second overtime.  Kendal Rinko '09 played a ball into the box and Tocchet touched it ahead of the Washington defender.  Tocchet took two steps and fired but Russell came off her line and deflected the rocket.  The score remained tied through the ten-minute extra session and the teams headed to a second overtime.

The Shorewomen got their opportunity in the second overtime when Garnet keeper Lauren Walker '09 came out to kick away a loose ball.  Walker got tangled with a Washington forward, leaving Yarborough with the ball and an empty net 20 yards away.  Yarbrough took a shot but the ball bounced wide left.

Walker made one save in goal for Swarthmore (2-6-3, 0-2-2 CC).

The Garnet travel north to Collegeville, Pa. on Tuesday, October 4 for their next match.  Swarthmore will take on Ursinus College in a  4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference contest.
