Rodd Rolls To ITA Finals
Zac Rodd '06 knocked off three seeded opponents, including top-seeded Paul Bristow of Mary Washington, on his way to the finals of the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Men's Tennis Championships this past weekend in Fredericksburg, Va. Rodd fell in the championship to Washington (Md.) junior Arturo Solis 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on October 3.
Rodd, seeded No. 5 in the championship singles draw, defeated Seth Feibelman of Washington & Lee 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and then rolled over Haverford's Kellan Webb 6-3, 6-2 in round 2 on Saturday. On Sunday, Rodd won easily 6-0, 6-0 over No. 9 John James from Mary Washington and then went on to upset No. 3 Brandon Harris from Goucher 7-5, 6-3.
Rodd started Monday morning on a roll, taking down Bristow 6-4, 6-4 and opened up the championship match by winning the first set. A battle ensued with Solis winning a close second set and then breezed through the third set for the title.
Rodd paired with classmate Brian Park to draw the top seed in championship doubles, winning three straight matches before falling in the semi-finals on Sunday to No. 4 ssed Stuart Sanford and David Shay from Washington & Lee by a score of 8-5.
In other Garnet championship singles action, Park (seeded No. 9) won his first round match, defeating Salisbury's James Mills 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Jason Dunn 6-4, 6-4 from Mary Washington in round two. Freshman Kevin Shaughnessy downed Bridgewater's Ryan Radke 6-2, 6-1 in round one before falling in round to No. 9 seed Yiran Liu. Freshman J.J. England beat Eric Varge 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 before falling in the second round, while Adam Wallwork '06 went 0-2 in the championship singles' draw.
In the B Draw singles, Shingo Murata '07 won three matches to advance to the quarters before falling to Mike Durkin from Mary Washington 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Dan Wulc '09 also won three times in the B Draw before succumbing to Haverford's Steve Feder in the quarterfinals.
