Gwynedd Shows No Mercy, Downs Swarthmore 2-1

Gwynedd-Mercy grabbed a two-goal lead and withstood a Garnet rally to win 2-1 in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. on Thursday afternoon.

Swarthmore midfielder Summer Spicer '07 scored her 10th goal of the season, a career-high, off a penalty stroke. Spicer's score, with only 2:46 left in regulation, gave the Garnet a chance but the Griffins' lead held up, improving its record to 7-9 overall.

Melissa LaVan '07 made nine saves in goal as Swarthmore slipped to 6-7 overall.

The Garnet resume Centennial Conference action on Saturday, October 22 when it hosts Muhlenberg at 1:00 p.m. on Clothier Field.

Mules Clip Garnet 1-0

Muhlenberg midfielder Christopher King scored ten minutes into the second half, giving the Mules all the offense it would need to defeat Swarthmore 1-0 in Centennial action on Wednesday evening in Allentown, Pa. It is the first conference defeat for the Garnet (10-3-1, 4-1-1 CC).Both teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Muhlenberg (9-4, 4-2 CC) holding a 8-5 advantage in the shot category.King put home his team-high eighth goal at 54:56, taking a pass from defender Joseph Benner and beating Swarthmore goalkeeper Reuben Heyman-Kantor '06 with a shot to the far post. The Mules defense locked down on Swarthmore for the remainder of the match, limiting the Garnet to only three shots in the second half.Muhlenberg goalie Peter Bennett registered two saves while Heyman-Kantor made four saves for Swarthmore.

The Garnet slip into a tie for first place in the Centennial standings with McDaniel, a 2-0 winner at Ursinus on Wednesday afternoon. Both squads have a total of 13 points and will face each other this Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. in Westminster, Md.

Golf: Cullinan Goes Low at Philadelphia University

Michael Cullinan '06 shot a 78 at Island Green on Tuesday afternoon, tying Matt Deckert from Holy Family for the low score.

Swarthmore's team was depleted by illness, preventing the Garnet from participating in the team scoring. Two other Swarthmore golfers circled the course: Zach Moody '07 carded an 86 and freshman Michael Bernasek fired an 83.

Conlon Hits Milestone in Gettysburg

Senior tri-captain Emily Conlon passed 3,000 career assists in Swarthmore's 3-0 defeat at Gettysburg (14-9, 7-2 CC) on Tuesday night. The Garnet (11-12, 4-3 CC) fell by scores of 30-24, 30-17, 30-21.

Conlon handed out 25 assists to go along with five digs on the evening. She now has 3,002 assists in her career, a school record, placing her 14th all-time in the Centennial Conference.

Erica George '07 led Swarthmroe with 11 kills and 14 digs while fellow outside hitter Jennifer Wang '09 contributed eight kills and 11 digs. Middle blocker Karen Berk '08 added five kills and four blocks.

The Garnet return to Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, October 22 when it plays host to Muhlenberg and Vassar in a tri-match. The day will begin with the Alumnae Match at 10:00 a.m., and Swarthmore will hit the court at 1:00 versus the Mules. Muhlenberg will face Vassar around 3:00 p.m. while the Garnet and Brewers will have a re-match of the third place game of the Seven Sisters Tournament at 5:00 p.m.

Garnet and Blue Jays Draw Even

Swarthmore and Johns Hopkins fought hard for 110 minutes, settling on a 0-0 tie in two overtimes in Centennial Conference action at Clothier Field on Saturday night.

The game seemed destined to continue along the scoreless path. Johns Hopkins had played five overtimes game already this season, tying on three separate occasions. Swarthmore has only allowed five goals all season, and has needed extra time on three occasions. Both goalkeepers came in with six shut outs apiece and the defenses held true to form.

Swarthmore's Reuben Heyman-Kantor made five saves and Johns Hopkins' Dan Coble countered with four stops as neither offense could find an open net.

The Blue Jays (7-2-4, 1-1-3) owned the first half, out shooting the Garnet 10-3. Swarthmore returned the favor in the second half, taking eight shots to two by Hopkins.

The big Centennial matches keep coming for Swarthmore (10-2-1, 4-0-1 CC); the team will travel to Allentown, Pa. on Wednesday, October 19 to face Muhlenberg in a 4:30 p.m. match-up.

Chapman and Santa Cruz Down Swarthmore

Outside hitter Erica George '07 tallied 12 kills and seven digs as the Garnet fell to both Chapman and UC-Santa Cruz 3-0 on Saturday in southern California. The Garnet lost by scores of 30-23, 30-17, 30-23 vs. Chapman and then 30-26, 30-17, 30-19 to the Banana Slugs.

In the Chapman game, freshman outside hitter Jennifer Wang had eight kills and 10 digs, while Emily Conlon '06 handed out 20 assists and registered 12 digs for her third straight double-double. Freshman Madeleine Case set the final game, collecting 13 assists and six digs.

In the Santa Cruz match, Heaney had a team-high 15 digs and Patrice Berry '06 had 7 kills and 12 digs.

Swarthmore travels to Gettysburg on Tuesday evening for its next match. The Garnet (11-11) take on the Bullets at 7:00 p.m. on October 18.

Terror Down Garnet 2-1 in OT

Kelly Neel's goal late in the first overtime lifted McDaniel (6-7-1, 3-3-1 CC) past Swarthmore (2-9-3, 0-5-2 CC) in Centennial Conference women's soccer action on Saturday in Westminster, Md.

Garnet midfielder Nicole Oberfoell '07 opened the game's scoring in the latter portion of the second half, putting in her first goal of the year at 75:48.

Neel's goal was assisted by Green Terror midfielder Tara Healy, who sent the game into overtime with a goal at the 79:02 mark.

McDaniel out-shot Swarthmore 15-8, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Swarthmore goalie Lauren Walker '09 stopped 10 McDaniel shots, while Green Terror keeper Michelle Mullen came up with 4 saves at the other end of the field.

Swarthmore travels to Dickinson for its next contest, a 12:00 p.m. game on Saturday, October 22.

Swarthmore Turns in Third at Seven Sisters

Freshman Emma Stanley and senior Carrie Ritter made All-Seven Sisters as the Garnet earned third as a team on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Stanley finished in sixth out of 105 runners, completing the course in a time of 20:05.2. Ritter, in her first race of 2005, was tenth in a time of 20:13.2.

Senior Debbie Farrelly finished 16th (20:39.4), followed in by Lauren Fety '06 in 18th (20:42).

A pack of Garnet runners finished 31st-33rd to complete the scoring. Kavita Hardy '08 (21:29.4), Bess Ritter '09 (21.29.6), and Emily Wistar '06 (21:30.6) crossed the finish line together to give Swarthmore a team total of 81.

Stanley and Ritter were selected All-Seven Sisters for finishing in the top ten.

Wellesley was the winner for the fourth straight year with 35 points and Smith was second with 74 points.

Swarthmore will compete in the Centennial Conference Championships in its next race. The Garnet will travel to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday, October 29 for the 11:00 a.m. race.

Garnet Roll To Third in Allentown

Swarthmore placed four runners in the top 25 to earn third place at the DeSales University Invitational in Allentown, Pa. on Saturday morning.

Vernon Chaplin '07 was the top Garnet finisher, completing the 8K course in a time of 28:03.49 to come in 11th out of 233 runners.

Sophomore Jon Shoop was next in 17th place (28:25.95) and classmate Ross Weller was right behind him in 19th position (28:28.97).

Freshman Erik Saka finished in 26th (28:47.71) and senior Jim Kreft came in 36th (28:58.69) to complete the Swarthmore scoring.

Swarthmore totaled 104 points, finishing behind Frostburg State (67 points) and East Stroudsburg (85).

Swarthmore will compete in the Centennial Conference Championships in its next race. The Garnet will travel to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday, October 29 for the 11:00 a.m. race.

Terror Slip Past Garnet 5-3

Green Terror junior forward Caitlin Potter (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks West) scored twice as McDaniel defeated Swarthmore 5-3 in Centennial action on a rainy Friday night on Clothier Field. The Green Terror improve to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial and the Garnet fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Green Terror drew first blood 11:57 into the first half. Potter re-directed a blast from freshman midfielder Brook Dixon ( Clayton, DE / Smyrna) to give McDaniel the early 1-0 lead.

Swarthmore answered with an Abbie Fischer '08 ( Sudbury, MA / Lincoln-Sudbury) goal at 17:28 to even the score 1-1. Forward Heidi Fieselmann '06 ( Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater Regional) possessed the ball on the left post and dropped a pass back to the right side. Fischer controlled the pass and flicked a shot past McDaniel goalie Erika Wawzyanick ( Wantage, NJ / High Point Regional). The contest remained tied into the intermission, with the Green Terror leading 6-4 in the shot category.

McDaniel took back the lead early in the second half, scoring four times in the span of 14 minutes. Junior defender Colleen Nugent ( Lancaster, PA / Lampeter Stras.) scored at 38:42 followed by senior forward Dani Unflat (Bear, DE / William Penn) with the eventual game-winner at 38:42. Unflat's goal was her eighth of the season, a team-high.

McDaniel senior midfielder Laura Bagley (Westhampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) scored at 46:26 and Potter followed with her second goal, re-directing another bullet off Dixon's stick at 48:48.

The Garnet came right back down the field to score. Midfielder Jessica Larson '06 ( Lincolnshire, IL / Stevenson) slammed home her firstgoal of the season at 49:06 to cut the McDaniel lead to 5-2. Fieselmann notched her team-leading 11 th score at 66:25, tipping in a shot from forward Lindsay Roth '07 ( Severna Park, MD / Severn) to complete the scoring.

Wawazyanick made five saves in goal for the Green Terror while junior Karen Lorang ( San Diego, CA / University) recorded three stops for the Garnet.

Swarthmore will travel to Gywnedd-Mercy College for their next game, a 4:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, October 20.
